All access attempts create a date and time stamped log entry. This reduces unnecessary intrusions protecting the animals and research. Environmental Monitoring is automated by having sensors in each animal room that record temperature, humidity, airflow and differential pressure. This data is automatically recorded and stored in the Watchdog system, providing tremendous time and labor savings through automation. Lighting Control and Monitoring ensures lights turn on and off according to your schedule. Animal well-being is linked to light; consistent scheduled exposure to controlled lighting can even reduce stress levels. Automated Watering System Control and Monitoring assures animal welfare and research integrity by continuously monitoring water pressure and flow levels in the watering system to make certain clean water is always available for the animals. Managing the Data is accomplished within an industry standard database format resulting in powerful research friendly reporting features in accordance with 21 CFR part 11. Detailed information about any room in your facility can be instantly viewed. The automatic date and time stamp provides a complete audit trail to assist with facility compliance. Monitoring Helps You...Manage 5

Access Control Critical research studies must be protected from accidents, contamination, and tampering. The access control feature is designed to monitor and control personnel traffic in the animal rooms. Watchdog gives you this control by securing doors with magnetic or electric strike locks; and by providing staff with their own personal identification number (PIN) for access to airlocks, front and rear doors for each room and perimeter doors. 6

Room Access Each technician, investigator and supervisor is assigned a unique four-digit personal identification number (PIN). To enter a room, the PIN is entered on the keypad located at each room; if the individual has permission, the door will unlock. All access attempts create a time and date stamped log entry, complete with the location and person's name. Room access rights for specific personnel are easily assigned and modified. Watchdog allows the administrator to set up a schedule of times during which system-wide access control is enabled or just enable access control for selected rooms on selected days. If the facility prefers free access to rooms during working hours, the access control does not need to be activated during that time. User accounts have the option to be created with an expiration date. This feature is used when contractors or temporary staff need access to the vivarium for a set length of time. Alarms Door locks can be monitored and alarms configured to notify personnel if the door is opened when it should be closed. Watchdog permanently documents every alarm condition with the location and time. Also, the system places a phone call, email or text page and provides detailed information to personnel of the alarm condition. Alarms can be acknowledged from any touchtone phone or from any computer in your facility. The Watchdog system is very flexible allowing the best management of your facility. 7

Automated Environmental Monitoring and Data Collection Network Cable Airflow Light Control Module Watchdog is one completely integrated system not multiple systems linked together. Environmental Sentry Panel Research animals need to have their environment closely monitored to protect them from sudden and unhealthy changes. Research animals have been lost when HVAC systems malfunction while heating rooms. Manually monitoring and accurately recording the various environmental readings is a very time consuming task. The Watchdog vivarium management system completely automates environmental monitoring and data collection, improving data accuracy and saving time and labor. Implementing the Watchdog system frees up the technicians schedules to care for their animals. Inside each animal room are a suite of specially designed sensors that detect temperature, humidity, airflow, differential pressure and lighting levels. Throughout the day, these sensors monitor the room environment and report specific readings to the Watchdog system. Watchdog stores, evaluates and acts on readings based on facillity specific criteria. For example, if the temperature gets to a specific value, appropriate personnel are notified to take action. 8

Sensor Module 4 Connections for On-Line Rack Flushing Pressure Station Authentication Panel Automated Watering System Controller Displays outside of the animal room show the current temperature, humidity, light status, airflow and differential pressure of the rooms. A highlight of the Watchdog system is our high quality instrument grade sensor modules, designed specifically for use in animal rooms. The Sensor Module combines temperature, humidity and light sensing in a single compact housing. We manufacture, calibrate and perform a 100% quality test of each sensor module. Environmental sensors must meet and be calibrated to Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) standards. We calibrate using sensors traceable to the National Institute of Standards Technology (NIST). The record of this calibration also becomes part of the research record. Since the temperature, humidity and light sensors are typically located in the animal room, they accurately reflect the animal environment and are accessible for periodic validation testing. Additional sensor packages are available for differential pressure, airflow, refrigerators, freezers and other special applications. 9

Automated Watering System Integration The more variables removed during a research study the stronger the research results. The drinking water provided to the animals is one variable. Research animals must have a clean, controlled supply of quality drinking water. Watchdog seamlessly integrates with the Edstrom automated watering system. It provides daily room or rack manifold flushing with integrated verification, monitoring and data collection. Animal welfare and research integrity is protected by extensive built-in diagnostics. Each day virtually all system components are automatically verified by monitoring water pressure and flow levels during flushing. This feature makes certain water is always available for the animals. Water purification using reverse osmosis is very effective, removing most contaminants in the drinking water. The RO8600 is an option with the automated watering system to provide high quality drinking water. When the RO8600 is integrated with Watchdog water quality is automatically documented; current status can be viewed and reports run such as ph, conductivity, flow, differential pressure and membrane health all through the Watchdog system. 10

Light Control and Verification Animal well being is linked to consistent scheduled exposure to controlled lighting. Watchdog ensures lights turn on and off according to the schedule you need in each room. It provides dual light levels that allow for a lower level "daylight" on a preset schedule, with a flexible, temporary override to provide higher-level lighting for staff work. If authorized, the animal care staff can adjust the lighting schedule themselves. Integrated with the monitoring feature of the Watchdog, a light level sensor mounted on the wall continuously verifies light level in the room, and all changes are logged with a date and time stamp. Watchdog does not rely only on the relay pilots to detect if lights are on or off; Watchdog checks the light state with a calibrated light level sensor. For instance, if a light is burned out, an alarm notification is sent to key personnel. For advanced lighting control we offer protection from light relay failures through a redundant light control using 3 relays with feedback and light verification from a sensor. Light control includes a programmable light blink safety feature, so the personnel in the room have advance notice of the lights turning off. An example is having the room lights blink at 5 minutes and again at 2 minutes prior to the lights turning off. 11

Data Management The power of the Watchdog system is found in the userfriendly reporting and ease of system configuration for animal facility managers. Report Writer Trending reports, analysis graphs and graphic reports help interpret the data in a clear and understandable manner. Report Writer generates reports and interactive graphs with the data collected by the Watchdog system. Data may be exported and used in different applications. Report Writer also uses wizards to aid in the report format. Simply select the report you wish to create, follow the on-screen instructions and generate your report. Save more time by creating a macro to automate reports that are printed on a regular basis. The Watchdog System software is 21 CFR part 11 (Electronic Record and Electronic Signature FDA Code Section) compliant to aid with the validation process. Preformatted standard reports in Watchdog include: Activities by room, high/low/average for temperature and humidity, exceptions and alarm status, point logging, state changes, lighting, user activity, automated watering, RO 8600 daily log, and notes. Daily temperature graph Zoomed in daily temperature graph 12

Designed for Vivariums Access Information Through the Web Administrators, investigators and technicians all rely on different types of information provided by the Watchdog system. They often need access to the information from different locations and at different times of the day. The system can be configured to allow access to Watchdog users through the facility s Intranet via a web browser, right at their desktop. Since it is web based, there is no additional software required at the desktop. Authorized users can acknowledge alarms, view room status, set up schedules, change access rights and run reports directly from their desktop computer or any web enabled device...or even remotely. A personalized home page can be created to show only the pertinent information for an individual. Administrators and researchers can easily run their reports right at their desk and not have to wait for someone in another department to run a report for them. Configuration On-screen wizards provide detailed step-bystep instructions that guide users in creating user accounts, alarm methods and schedules. The wizard makes the system very flexible and makes customization easy. The data is organized by familiar room numbers and facility location names. Simply open the room folder and locate the room. All rooms in alarm are clearly marked by a red exclamation point. You can instantly view detailed information about any room in your facility. Daily lighting graph Red is used to indicate individual room parameters in alarm state and pink indicates alarms that have been acknowledged. 13

Fluctuations in temperature, humidity, airflow, air pressure and water supply can compromise animal welfare. Watchdog can notify your staff when problems begin to occur: alerting them by pager, voicemail, call out and email. Watchdog's email alarm notification can be sent to wireless devices like PDAs or cell phones; this provides direct followup and better management. Active alarms can also be checked onscreen at the Watchdog central computer or from your desktop with a web browser. For example, if the temperature in a room gets too high, Watchdog delivers a text message to the on-call staff member. A call into the voicemail system retrieves specific details and acknowledges the alarm. If the check list feature is enabled when acknowledging an alarm via the web, the person acknowledging is forced to complete a check list. Depending on the type of alarm the customizable checklist may include: was researcher notified, was supervisor notified, did you go to the animal room? Watchdog date and time stamps all activities. Notes can be added to a particular alarm event to provide an explanation of what happened to cause the alarm and the resolution.the alarm data is stored and at the end of the study, a record can be provided indicating if environmental parameters were exceeded and how long each occurrence lasted. Tested for Validation and Compliance Validating untested systems can be a difficult task. Standard building management systems must be adapted to provide the audit trails and compliance records needed for research facility system validation. All Watchdog development is done with system validation as a core requirement. Extensive testing and documentation is done at every stage, from development through final production, aiding in a smooth validation process. Configuring the Watchdog system requires no custom programming and it is not dependent on complex server-to-server programming to receive the full benefits of the system. Watchdog automatically logs every change made to the system. With automatic logging, there is a complete audit trail of configuration changes to the system. You can even require that notes be added anytime a change is made. Watchdog has been specially designed to be compliant with Electronic Records Electronic Signatures rule (21 CFR part 11). Edstrom offers additional consulting, validation services and support for highly critical applications. 14

System Components Authentication Panels allow many monitoring features, such as basic environmental parameters like temperature, humidity, airflow and differential pressure, to be viewed in a uniform way directly at each animal room. Depending on the application, different types of authentication panels are available. Several commands can be enacted through an Authentication Panel keypad at room level such as starting a watering system flush, initiating a clean mode to suspend alarms during cleaning of the animal room, logging an animal check or dosing, and toggling the lights. From a panel you can view basic alarm information and the time of day. A complete suite of built-in features to support diagnostics, troubleshooting, calibration and validation have been built in. Sensor Modules are high quality instrument grade designed specifically for use in animal rooms. The Sensor Module combines temperature, humidity and light sensing in a single compact housing. The rugged 316 stainless steel watertight housing is environmentally sealed and will withstand wash down. Additional sensor packages are available for differential pressure, airflow, refrigerators, freezers and other special applications. Watchdog Central Server and Software collects, organizes, stores and interprets the data. Watchdog Software runs on a central server that is web based and has a familiar web browser feel. It provides the main interface for configuration and reporting. It is easy to configure system parameters, create templates and run reports.templates enable the parameter setting of many rooms all at once. Watchdog is one completely integrated system not multiple systems linked together. Web Interface allows management of the facility. With the Web interface and a standard Internet browser, authorized users can perform core Watchdog operations acknowledge alarms, setup schedules, change access rights to secure rooms, and more, right from their desktop computer. 15

System Expansion EQUIPMENT: Automated Watering System Controller Environmental Sentry Panel Automated Watering System Controller manages the daily rack and room manifold flushing as well as the monitoring and alarming of the pressure and flow of the watering system. Watchdog centralizes where the data is stored. Configuration of multiple Edstrom watering systems can be accomplished through one Watchdog system. Environmental Sentry Panel can be used for standalone environmental monitoring. It also fully integrates with Watchdog to provide sensor connections for refrigerators, freezers, cold rooms and vent racks. It supports Edstrom light control solutions and a wide range of sensors. RO8600 Reverse Osmosis Machine RO8600 integration allows automatic storage of the daily log information, and events related to cleaning, configuration changes and back flushing of pre-filters. Current status can be viewed through Watchdog and daily log reports can easily be generated for any date range. 16

APPLICATIONS: ViewPort is a truly innovative system to improve communication, streamline workflow and reduce paperwork in the vivarium. ViewPort can completely eliminate the need for paper log sheets replacing them with web enabled touchscreens. ViewPort facilitates duty logging to be a real-time management tool. Key ViewPort functions: track duties, log observations, deliver messages and present reports. Duties that need to be completed during the day are displayed at each room. When a technician has completed a duty it is recorded with their name, date and time. Observations about the animals or equipment can be logged as a permanent record. When a critical observation is made an alarm will notify the appropriate personnel. Electronic Messaging allows investigators and managers to post specific instructions for a particular room on the status screen. The system also offers private electronic messaging between staff members. Touchscreens act as easy to use kiosks for interaction with ViewPort right in the vivarium. Navigator is a web-based application that uses your building floor plan as the map to retrieve specific room information for any part of your facility. It gives the current environmental readings in the room. It also indicates the current alarm status of each room; active alarms, acknowledged alarms or normal status. Duties and observations from ViewPort can be viewed through Navigator. If your facility has a wireless network, wireless handhelds that support a web browser can be used with ViewPort.
