The Basics Refuse and recycling collections are provided by the City of Sun Prairie s contractor, Pellitteri Waste Systems (608-257- 4285). Only residents living in the following types of dwellings receive City-sponsored refuse and recycling collections: Single-Family Home Duplex Four-Plex Condominium Residents receiving City-sponsored collections are also allowed to use the City of Sun Prairie Recycle Center. You will need to apply for the free permit either online (www.cityofsunprairie.com/public-works) or in person (300 E. Main Street, 2nd floor). See page 11 for address, hours and more information on the Recycle Center. Residents receiving City-sponsored collections are also provided with either 65 gallon or 95 gallon disposal receptacles. If you live in a multi-family dwelling or own commercial property, you are unable to use the Recycle Center or participate in the curbside collection dates. You cannot use the Recycle Center because these types of properties do not pay the special tax charge to do so, whereas the above mentioned properties do pay for its use. Multi-family and commercial properties are responsible for providing their own refuse and recycling collection services and disposal containers. All questions for collections on these properties should be directed to either the Property Manager or the Property Owner. The City does not handle these collections. «4»

Cart Placement «5»

Refuse Your cart with the TAN lid is for refuse/garbage. These carts are collected every week, be sure to have it out curbside by 7:00 a.m. on your collection day. Items must fit in your cart with the lid completely closed. If you have large items to be picked up see bulk collection on page 20. If you have extra bags of refuse you would like picked up, you will need to call Pellitteri Waste Systems (608-257-4285) and pay per bag for collection on your next pick up day. «6»

Recycling Your cart with the GREEN lid is for recyclables. Recycling Collection occurs every other week. See map on page 6 to determine your collection week. All recycle items can be co-mingled; they do not need to be separated by items. The Sun Prairie recycling program accepts the following materials for collection in your green cart: Paper Products Books - Soft-covered (Comic books, phone books, puzzle books, catalogs, etc.) Boxes (Cereal, cracker, soda, tissue, gift, packing, etc.) Paper (Office, computer, writing, shredded, bags, etc.) Containers Aluminum Cans (NO FOIL) Glass (NO WINDOWS) Metal Lids Milk & Juice Plastics - #1 through #7 (Except motor oil) Corrugated Cardboard Steel / Tin Junk Mail, including envelopes (including EMPTY aerosol cans and EMPTY Magazines paint cans) Newspapers (Including inserts) PIZZA BOXES? You can recycle the top if it does not have grease or food on it. The bottom should be placed in garbage. If you have extra bags of recyclables, you can place them next to your cart on your next recycling collection day in CLEAR plastic bags (kitchen size) and have them collected for free. «7»

Residential Refuse & Recycling Map «8»

The Recycling Center (Drop-off site) The Recycle Center is located at 1798 South Bird Street and is open to all City of Sun Prairie residents that live in single family or 1-4 unit dwellings that pay the special city recycle center tax. Residents wishing to use The Recycle Center must have a permit, which can easily be obtained by stopping at City Hall during business hours and filling out the application or by completing the application online at www.cityofsunprairie.com under the Public Works page. «11»

Yard Waste Curbside Collections Yard waste is categorized as leafy vegetation that composts in a short period of time. This includes: grass, leaves, garden waste, shrub trimmings, and twigs smaller than pencils. Yard waste materials placed at the curb for collection on the scheduled weeks must be placed in OPEN trash bags, garbage cans (no lids), or storage containers (no lids). See website. They must be placed at the curb by 7 a.m. on Monday of the designated collection week to be picked up during that week. Yard waste can also be disposed of at the Recycle Center with a permit (see page 8). Whether materials are placed curb side or taken to the Recycle Center, please do not mix in brush or garbage. «12»

Grasscycling If you practice grasscycling you leave your grass clippings on the lawn after mowing to decompose. Grass clippings are mostly water. When you mow regularly, clippings quickly decompose and release nutrients to fertilize the lawn. Research shows that when grass clippings are left on the lawn, one-third less fertilizer is needed to achieve the same color and grass density found on lawns where the clippings are removed. This also means less needs to be hauled for composting. «13»

Brush Collections Brush consists of sticks and branches. They are collected curbside approximately once a month from April through November. These collections are scheduled for brush that is generated by City residents who receive City-sponsored refuse/recycle collections. Once an area has been collected the crew will not return to the area until the next scheduled collection-be sure to have your brush out curbside by 7 a.m. on Monday. See schedule on website. «14»

Medicine & Sharps Disposal Sharps, such as medical needles, syringes, and lancets pose a problem for collection crews when they are improperly mixed with trash or recyclables. Sharps are a significant health concern for all workers who handle solid waste whether at the curb, the landfill, or the recycling facility. All needle stick injuries require workers to undergo extensive testing, pose serious disease risks and can cause long-term emotional stress. State regulations require households to safely package sharps for proper disposal and prohibit putting sharps in the landfill. Check with your pharmacy for options on sharps recycling. «19»

Large Item / Bulk Collection Large items including furniture (mattresses, box springs, dressers, carpet, etc.) can be picked up curbside. All that is needed is a quick call and payment to one of the following companies: -Pellitteri Waste Systems (608-257-4285) -1-800-GOT JUNK -JUNK KING (1-888-888-JUNK) -Guy-Girl and a Truck (608-209-5977) or -College Hunks (1-888-689-5999) *Remember bulk collection items cannot be placed out at curb prior to noon of the day before scheduled pickup per city ordinance* Other options to consider before throwing your unwanted items out for pick up: -Can it be RE-USED by someone else? -Can it be RECYCLED? «20»

Items that can be accepted include: washers, dryers, dishwashers, microwaves, ranges, water heaters, and smaller items that you do not want to put in your collection cart (blenders, toasters, etc.).
