Complex urban projects require a capability to lead and animate large multi disciplinary teams, sometimes over a long period. These have been the cornerstones to Alan's approach to urban projects over the last 30 years. His clients come from both the private and public sectors and the projects have range from the scale of an individual site, to a city quarter or a geographical region. Issues of sustainability have been to the forefront in all of these projects as has a realism which bears in mind that the success of a project lies in its becoming a reality. Alan HENNESSY has led teams working on the Grand Axe International design competition at La Défense in Paris, the urban regeneration of the Naval Dockyards at La Seyne-sur-Mer in the south of France and of Royal Victoria Dock in London, masterplans for the regeneration of a canal basin in Newry in Northern Ireland, for the quartier Bardo in Constantine Algeria, the Mohammed VI University Campus in Morocco and residential and economic projects in India. Why Rotterdam Youghal An approach to designing for sustainable living It can be argued that urbanism and urban design are verbs not nouns. That they are complex processes where the journey is in many cases as important as the destination. Towns, cities and communities should be livable places providing shelter, opportunity and security to the body, mind and spirit, in short ensuring wellbeing. It is impossible to meet this challenge without considering and balancing the needs and desires of a place and its inhabitants, past, present and future. How these needs and desires are assessed, analyzed, prioritized and the solutions proposed is an iterative process which concerns a wide range of actors, public, political and technical possessing many different and complementary skills. It is a process which should be rooted also in the place and its relationship to wider regional, national and global concerns. It should try to engage everyone and everything that is in this place. The urbanist has an important role to play in this process but is only one of many actors. The ability to pause, listen, hear, look, reflect and understand before proposing possible solutions is an essential skill. It is exciting and a privilege to study a place and it carries responsibilities. This is what makes urbanism and urban design so satisfying.
