that appeared in the January 2017 issue, outdoor technology is the seventh-fastest growing product category. So, for the first time ever, CE Pro is specifically gauging the outdoor installation market via the 2017 CE Pro Outdoor Technology Study. The study was conducted in February and had 223 responses. Among the key pieces of takeaway data are: The median custom installation company performed nine outdoor installations in 2016. The median cost for an outdoor project in 2016 was $6,920. Nearly half of integrators (48 percent) report that their outdoor installations grew in 2016 compared with the year before. Among those who reported an increase in their outdoor business, the average growth rate was 23 percent. Exterior surveillance cameras are the most commonly installed outdoor technology, followed by under-eave audio loudspeakers, outdoor access points, flat-panel TVs and mounts. The hottest regions for outdoor technology installations in 2016 were (in NUMBER OF OUTDOOR PROJECTS IN 2016 11-25 25+ 18% 24.5% ZERO 4% 6-10 26% 1-5 27.5% The median number of outdoor projects installed by a CE pro in 2016 was nine. 2015 VS. 2016 OUTDOOR BUSINESS 47% 50% 3% UP SAME DOWN Clearly, installing technology outdoors is growing, with a large percentage of integrators citing an increase in activity in 2016. More than half of all integrators in each region reported growth in their exterior installation business. Three out of every four outdoor installations (75 percent) are extended zones added to an interior audio, video or networking installation. Weatherproof cable integrity and conduit are the biggest challenges dealers face with outdoor projects, followed by proper equipment placement, contractor coordination (namely landscapers) and corrosion problems on equipment.
