In 1800, Frederik W. Herschel was testing filters to help him observe sun spots. When he used a red filter, he found there was a lot of heat produced by the light. He then split the sunlight into its different colours using a prism to measure the temperature of each. He positioned another thermometer outside the last visible colour red and found that this final thermometer was reading more than all the other thermometers in the visible light bands. He concluded there must be a heat-producing invisible wavelength below ( infra ) the colour red and consequently called it Infra Red. Far Infrared is the long-wave, zero light range of Infrared heat and produces lower, more comfortable heater temperatures than middle or near Infrared heaters. Far Infrared is called the Vital Range of heat and is used in saunas and baby incubators because of its healthy properties. Efficiency Infrared Energy Only 25 W/m 3 energy is required for Infrared but 45 W/m 3 is required for central heating because Infrared warms surfaces not the air. Over time these surfaces radiate back, air cannot. Zoning Infrared can be zoned to heat only the area required. With central heating, zoning is far less efficient because the central system still needs to run even to heat one room. Temperature With Far Infrared, people can feel comfortable at 3-4 degrees below the air temperature at which they would normally feel comfortable using central heating systems. This is due to the walls, ceiling and floor of the building becoming warm and radiating heat comfortably, despite lower air temperatures. Control For occasional heating, such as top-up heating on cold days, panels can simply be plugged in and switched on and off.
