Meet The Econauts Our ZerØ Waste Ambassadors We are committed to all aspects of sustainability. We integrate green practices into our operations through education, everyday action, innovative technology, and exemplary practice.
The GØal is ZerØ Waste. Every action matters. It s about making the greenest choice as often as you can, and stretching to do something differently. Krista Mays, Sustainability Manager, Housing Dining Hospitality (HDH) o ZerØ in ON UC SAN DIEGO RECYCLABLES: 1. Plastics: #1-7 rigid plastics bottles, cups, plates, containers, including all dining to-go ware 2. Cardboard 3. Aluminum and Metal: soda cans, tin foil, and food cans 4. Paper: including coffee cups, soda cups, milk cartons, juice boxes, and any paper without food or human waste contamination 5. Glass: clear and colored glass bottles and containers 3
1 Year + 1 Shopper = 500 Bags If everyone in the United States tied their annual consumption of plastic bags together in a giant chain, the chain would reach around the Earth's equator 776 times! Zero Waste Fail. 4
COMPOST WITH RECYCLE FOOD ZERØ WASTE IN MIND CONSERVE WITH SAVE ENERGY ZERØ WASTE IN MIND REDUCE WITH REFILL & REUSE ZERØ WASTE IN MIND Food scraps include all food, meat, solid dairy, bones, and coffee grinds and tea bags. Keep trash and recyclables out of the food scrap bins. If the scraps are contaminated, the entire bin has to be thrown in the trash. HDH takes food scraps to a composting facility, where they are converted into compost for use. 1. Plug computers into power strips, and turn off the power strips when not in use or fully charged. 2. Turn off lights and utilize sunlight during the day. Save lights for night use and use LED lights. 3. Play video games less! Our greatest energy consumption comes from game systems. 1. Use your refillable bottle at any Dining Services location and get $.20 off your purchase. 2. Avoid bags use reusable totes or your backpack. 3. Look for products with minimal or recyclable packaging. 5
CØnnect the DrØps Decrease your shower time! Aim for ZERØ to 7 minutes. Turn off the sink while you brush your teeth, soap up your hands, and shave. Report leaky faucets and broken sprinklers to 858.534.26ØØ. 3, 2, 1, ZERØ! Following these three simple steps will dramatically decrease if not ZERØ out your water consumption. 6
What's CØØkin? A WHOLE LOTTA ZERØ. ) Look for Fair Trade items, which ensure socially responsible products, as well as fair prices and social/environmental farming standards. Available at all HDH Markets. ) Choosing Humane items ensures products from animals raised in humane conditions. All HDH restaurants use cage-free eggs. ) Eat at Roots, HDH s Vegan restaurant. You ll find ZERØ meat at this establishment! ) Choosing organiccertified foods guarantees ZERØ pesticides, herbicides, synthetic fertilizers, antibiotics, or genetic modification. ) Taking only what you can eat saves water, energy, money, and the food itself. By thinking ZERØ waste, you'll also better maintain the size of your waist! ) Limiting meat consumption is better for the environment AND your health. The ZerØ FactØr Unplug It! E-WASTE IS ANYTHING WITH A PLUG. Beware: It s illegal to throw electronics and batteries into a regular trash can! 8 ) Battery disposal bins can be found in the Bookstore, Earl s Market, MOM at Muir College, and many other locations throughout campus. Batteries can also be put in a sealed envelope, labeled Batteries, and placed in campus mail. ) Attend the electronics donation event during Earth Week to recycle your electronics. To learn more, call 858.534.2753. Best Buy and Goodwill also accept electronics. ) Recycle old ink cartridges and buy refilled ones.

Being a zerø is sø Easy! Being a ZERØ comes with great responsibility. Your apartment and/or ResHall was built or renovated to be green. Please help by: Cleaning your hair out of your drain grate. Kinda gross, we know but cleaning the grates means ZERØ visits from maintenance! 10 Using foam & liquid soaps*. Glycerineand cream-based soaps leave a residue that isn t compatible with low-flow water systems. Wipe cream off with a towel before you rinse! Cracking your windows to ventilate the air even when the heater is on. Trust us, and let your concrete building breathe! Using power strips and turning them off when not in use. let's talk abøut ZerØIng Øut You just moved in. Now let's talk about moving out. It can be simple. Just start early! Donate it. San Diego Food Bank bins accept unopened, non-perishable food items. DAV bins accept books, clothes, furniture, electronics, household items, and anything reusable. Recycle it. Recycling bins will be clearly marked. Be sure to recycle glass and plastic bottles, paper, cardboard, metal, and aluminum cans. Trash it. Do this as your last resort. Your goal is to make ZERØ trips to the trash this year. 11
