In April we organise educational tour on History of Interior Design and its Components. The tour takes place in London, England. Tour Purpose London is a centre of historic architecturally important buildings, grand design projects with unforgettable traditional and modern interiors, and museums with rare collections of decorative and applied art. Our tour provides a unique opportunity to visit within one week museums well known all over the world, and see the works of famous architects and designers such as William Morris, Christopher Wren, the Adam brothers and many others. You will be able to experience first hand the history of western interior design and use your new knowledge to work on a study project under our guidance in during the tour. The experience will be invaluable investment in your further development and inspire your creative imagination. Program History of Interior Design and its Components April Day 1 after 15.00 18.00 Sunday The tour participants arrive at their hotels in London (according to the terms and conditions of their packages) Welcome meeting of the tour organisers with the group. Introduction of the meeting participants and a greeting speech from the organisers. The participants will receive the tour program and materials. The meeting location will be confirmed. Travel by Tube to the location of the first seminar in Central London. 1st seminar. In the program: Interior Design History presentation, introduction of the study tasks, discussion about the approach to be used for the work on the tasks, additional clarifications pertaining to the tour program. A walk from the seminar location to the British Museum, lunch at the museum cafe. 14.00 17.30 British Museum tour, group work on the study tasks, coffee break. The participants need to bring cameras and notebooks for sketching and records. The origins of the British Museum lie in the will of the physician, naturalist and collector, Sir Hans Sloane (1660 1753). Over his lifetime, Sloane collected more than 71,000 objects which he wanted to be preserved intact after his death. He bequeathed the whole collection to King George II for the nation in return for a payment of 20,000 to his heirs. The gift was accepted and on 7 June 1753, an Act of Parliament established the British Museum, the first national public museum in the world. Visit to The Wallace Collection. The purpose of the visit: to view the residence and its interior as a representation of a traditional house of the English aristocracy. The participants should pay specific attention to the interior elements related to the study tasks. Please bring cameras and notebooks. You are permitted to take pictures with your camera without flash. The Wallace Collection is a national museum in a historic London town house, The Hertford House. It was the main residence of its former owners, Sir Richard and Lady Wallace. The House was bequeathed to the British nation by Sir Richard s widow, Lady Wallace, in 1897. The museum presents the wonderful works of art collected in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries by the first four Marquesses of Hertford and Sir Richard Wallace, the son of the 4th Marquess. In 25 galleries are displays of French 18th century paintings, furniture and porcelain with superb Old Masters work and a world class armoury. There are also splendid medieval and Renaissance objects, including Limoges enamels, maiolica, glass and bronzes. Oxford Street, lunch at one of the local cafes. Visit to Victoria & Albert Museum. A viewing of the British furniture collection, group work on the study tasks, coffee / tea break. The Victoria and Albert Museum s collections span two thousand years of art in virtually every medium, from many parts of the world, and is a treasure house of amazing and beautiful objects. The Museum was established in 1852, following the enormous success of the Great Exhibition the previous year. Its founding principle was to make works of art available to all, to educate working people and to inspire British designers and manufacturers. Profits from the Exhibition were used to establish the Museum of Manufactures, as it was initially known, and exhibits were purchased to form the basis of its collections. Although the V&A s collections are international in their scope, they contain many particularly important British works - especially British silver, ceramics, textiles and furniture. This visit will allow you to collect material for the work on the study tasks: photographs and sketches of the ornaments and patterns; analysis of the period colour scheme; the premises lighting scheme. Leighton House museum is the former home of the Victorian artist Frederic, Lord
Leighton (1830-1896). The only purpose-built studio-house is one of the most remarkable buildings of XXIX century, containing a fascinating collection of paintings and sculpture by Leighton and his contemporaries. The Arab Hall is designed to display Leighton s priceless collection of Islamic tiles, mostly brought from Damascus in Syria, the interior with its gold mosaics, marble columns and golden dome evokes a compelling vision of the Orient. 12.00 13.30 13.30 14.15 14.15 17.30 17.30-19.00 After 19.00 Walk in Kensington with a stop to see the Kensington Roof Gardens. The gardens are laid out on the roof of the former department store on Kensington High Street and untill recently were the biggest roof gardens in Europe. Lunch at Victoria & Albert Cafe. The cafe is located in the V&A s original refreshment rooms, the Morris, Gamble and Pointer Rooms. These three rooms formed the first museum restaurant in the world and were intended as a showpiece of modern design, craftsmanship and manufacturing. Continue V&A collection viewing, The Middle Asia textiles section in particular, to see the variety of ornaments and patterns, and in addition we should pay attention to the lighting systems in different sections of the museum. Visit to the famous Harrods, one of the few single-site department stores in the world. The Terracotta Palace is the biggest store in the UK and covers over 5 acres of space. From haute couture to pet accessories, the finest luxury merchandise is showcased in the lavish setting of the Knightsbridge store, stretching across 7 floors and 330 departments. You will be able to see the impressive interiors and collection of furniture, buy a gift and / or have a tea there. Day 5 9.00 9.15 9.15 10.00 10.00 12.30 Thursday The group meeting at the usual place. Travel by Tube to Walthamstow to visit the William Morris museum. Viewing of the William Morris museum gallery. It is a unique opportunity for the students to look at the famous ornaments and patterns and see original wallpaper and fabrics designs, and Arts and Crafts furniture. It is the only public gallery devoted to the revolutionary Victorian designer, craftsman, writer and campaigner William Morris. The gallery centres on internationallysignificant collection of textiles, furniture, ceramics, paintings, designs and personal items connected with Morris and his associates. Morris inspired a new generation of artists, designers and makers who shared his enthusiasm for quality materials, craftsmanship and designs based on natural forms; he was one of the founders of the Arts and Crafts movement. 12.30 14.30 Return to Central London, lunch in a cafe in Soho.
14.30 17.00 Visit one of the London s auction houses to see the unique collections of art and merchandise presented for sale. An auction house can be a source of many items not available elsewhere. A worthwhile designer and client can work well together using the resources of an auction house. After 17.00 Day 6 9.00 9.15 9.15 10.00 10.00 12.30 Friday The group meets at the usual place Travel by Tube to Hoxton to visit Geffrye Museum. The Geffrey Museum focuses on the urban living rooms and gardens of the English middle classes. Their collections show how homes have been used and furnished over the past 400 years, reflecting changes in society and behaviour as well as style, fashion and taste. A series of period rooms lead visitors on a walk through time from 17th century oak furniture and panelling, past muted Georgian elegance and eclectic Victorian style, to 20th century modernity and contemporary living. These rooms are complemented by a sequence of period gardens and a walled herb garden which illustrate the role of the garden in home life. Set in 18th-century almshouses and surrounded by gardens, the museum is often described as an oasis in the heart of the city. 12.30-17.30 Return to the hotels. The tour participants will present their study tasks. The presentation will be followed by farewell dinner. Day 7 Saturday The tour is finished and the participants leave according to the hotel check out time. Taxi or minibus to airport can be arranged in advance via hotel reception. The cost of the travel to airport is not included in the package.
