The product is a single regenerative repeater intended for use on (1.544 Mbps) transmission lines. It may also be used to interconnect bays when the interconnection violates the 85 foot design standard patch cord length. The repeater consists of a printed circuit card attached to a front panel designed to be installed in the ADC Model M1544-252 Mounting Shelf. The repeater is identified on the front panel by the imprinted model number. 1089749 Rev A Page 1
Revision History ISSUE DATE REASON FOR CHANGE Issue 11 01/1999 Reissued to include Equalizer Network option selections for manufacture discontinued repeaters, Model 544-01 and 544-01A. Issue 12 08/2000 Update to current format standards. Trademark Information ADC and ADC Telecommunications are registered trademarks of ADC Telecommunications, Inc. 1 PRODUCT DESCRIPTION The Model 544-01B plug-in Intraoffice (1.544 Mbps) Repeater regenerates standard signals and provides standard DS1 level output signals through switchable equalizers at distances up to 655 feet. An artificial line at the input provides a shaped line loss input signal level in the range from 0 to 27 db, relative to the level. Figure 1 shows a block diagram of Model 544-01B, Intraoffice Repeater. The repeater is designed to automatically detect and operate from a dc supply voltage of either 15 Vdc or 48 Vdc. Each repeater is individually fused. A front panel LED, next to the fuse, indicates a fuse failure. A relay alarm board on the mounting shelf provides two sets of Normally Open (NO) dry contacts for connection to local alarm surveillance equipment. A mounting shelf alarm condition (plug-in module fuse failure) operates the alarm relay and closes the NO alarm contacts. The relay alarm board may be bypassed and local alarm surveillance equipment can be connected to the back panel twelve-pin connector wire-wrap alarm lead pin F. A plug-in module fuse failure places 48 Vdc battery on the F pin. Selectable equalization networks at the output of the regenerator correct for 0 to 220 feet, 220 to 440 feet, or 440 to 655 feet, (0 to 67 m, 67 to 134 m, or 134 to 200 m) of ABAM or equivalent cable gauge as shown in Figures 2 and 3. Figure 4 illustrates the use of a repeater to overcome the designed maximum transmission distance of patch cords. Page 2

The alpha pin designations refer to the right-hand column of terminals on the mounting shelf connector, while the numeric designations refer to the left-hand terminals as viewed from the rear of the mounting shelf. Prior to installing the module into the mounting shelf, the equalizer network selection switches must be set. The repeater is factory set for interconnection at 0 to 220 feet (67 m). The option switch assembly, shown in Figure 6 for Model 544-01B, is a dip switch with twelve switch selections for inserting the equalizer networks in the output of the repeater. Network selection is determined by the cable length between the repeater and the (point of interconnection). Selectable distances are from 0 to 220 feet, 220 to 440 feet and 440 to 655 feet, (0 to 67 m, 67 m to 134 m and 134 to 200 m). Table 2 lists the switch settings for Model 544-01B. Page 5
The Intraoffice Repeater occupies one position in the mounting shelf. Prior to inserting the repeater into the mounting shelf, the equalizer network option switches must be determined and set. To install the repeater, proceed as follows: Slide the keyed card into place in the mounting shelf and make sure it is firmly seated. Electrical, circuit and alarm connections are established by plug-in contacts at the rear of the printed circuit card. Channel guides assure proper alignment of the card and positive connections of the contacts. If there is excessive resistance, remove the module and check for improper alignment or obstructions.
