Claremont School of Theology Campus Housing Fire Safety The Department of Education requires colleges and universities to provide fire safety records to its students and to their families. This information is reported to the Department of Education and is available for public inspection. Before a Fire Keep your apartment neat and clean to minimize fire hazards. Do not leave bicycles, shoes, toys, or other articles on the public balconies, stairwells, and walkways. During a fire or other emergency, these obstructions will mean the difference between life and death. Do not block exits from your apartment. Do not block fire lanes. Make sure you and your family are familiar with the Claremont School of Theology s Emergency Response Plan, and how to properly evacuate and meet at your designated assembly area (See Designated Assembly Areas for more information). Please also make a family emergency preparedness plan that will guide in the process of evacuating your apartment. Be aware of the nearest fire exits: doors, windows, and stairs. Have more than one option. Your nearest exit may be blocked. Do not use elevators during a fire. Before opening any door, place the back of your hand near the door to check for the presence of heat or fire on the other side. Visually check the gaps around the door for smoke. If escape is not possible, stay put, and find a way to signal rescuers, by telephone, by making loud noises, or by hanging towels or sheets out the window. Be familiar with your designated assembly area. Claremont School of Theology has established assembly areas for each housing unit and building. This will help to identify missing residents who may need rescue. Know the locations of available firefighting equipment. Fire extinguishers are provided throughout the campus and may be used to extinguish small fires. Read the instructions on the extinguisher to learn its proper use before a fire happens. Fire Drills Colleges and universities are required to periodically conduct fire drills for campus housing. CST will announce the day and time of any drills at least one week in advance of the scheduled drill. In Case of Fire For fires of any size, call 911 to summon the Los Angeles County Fire Department, the fire agency serving the campus. Any attempts to extinguish the fire should be made after calling 911.
If the fire is too large for an extinguisher, evacuate the area, and call 911 if you have not already called.
