Introduction Notes Thank you for recycling! Your actions do make a difference. Making new products from recycled materials instead of virgin materials conserves natural resources, saves landfill space and reduces the pollution created in the manufacturing process. For example, by making new steel cans out of recycled material, energy use is reduced by 74%, air pollution by 85%, solid waste by 95% and water pollution by 76%. Keep recycling working by purchasing products made from recycled materials. Contact the Office of Pollution Prevention at (618) 233-7769 for information on waste reduction and recycling for schools, businesses and homes; alternatives to leaf burning, air pollution, ozone alerts, reducing household hazardous waste, school education materials, classroom presentations, etc. General Rules ALUMINUM CANS Rinse, flatten and separate from steel cans. GLASS BOTTLES AND JARS Rinse, remove lids and separate by color. NEWSPAPER Inserts are acceptable. Don t let the newspaper get wet, it will not be recyclable. PLASTICS Rinse, remove lids and flatten (see page 32 for the types of plastic). STEEL CANS Rinse, remove labels and flatten. FERROUS METAL INCLUDES: Tin and steel (anything a magnet can stick to). NON FERROUS METAL INCLUDES: Scrap aluminum, copper, brass, and stainless steel. 4 41

Use reusable products rather than disposable (i.e. dinner plates & paper.) Use reusable bags for grocery shopping. Buy in bulk. Large sizes deliver more product with less packaging waste and is usually more economical. Pack yourself or your children a waste free lunch. Put food in reusable containers rather than a disposable bag. Leave your grass clippings lie-don t bag them. As the clippings decay, they return important nutrients to the soil. Start a compost pile. Here are some fun facts about energy and recycling. One pound of recycled steel saves enough energy to light a 60 watt incandescent bulb for 24 hours. For every glass bottle recycled, we save enough energy to light a 100 watt incandescent bulb for four hours...or enough energy to light an equivalent 23 watt compact fluorescent lamp (CFL) for more than 16 hours! All of the materials recycled in Illinois each year save enough energy to provide heat and light for 400,000 Illinois homes. Recycling one ton of glass saves the equivalent in energy of 10 gallons of oil. Every ton of paper recycled saves enough energy to heat and air condition the average American home for at least six months. Recycling two aluminum cans saves the same amount of energy it takes to power a personal computer for one work day. Tossing away an aluminum can wastes as much energy as pouring out half that can s volume of gasoline. In 2006, 52 billion aluminum cans were recycled in the U.S., saving the energy equivalent of 14 million barrels of crude oilthree quarters of America s consumption for one day.
