The following items will aid in completing the damper installation in a timely and effective manner. 1) Lift or handle damper using sleeve or frame. Do not lift damper using blades or actuators. ) Damper (rectangular) has label on outside of sleeve indicating a No Screw area. Do not install screws into this area as screws may interfere with unexposed blade linkage and prevent damper blades from opening and/or closing. 3) Damper must be installed into duct or opening square (round) and free of twist or other misalignment. Damper must not be squeezed or stretched into duct or opening. Out of square, out of round, racked, twisted or misaligned installations can cause excessive leakage and/or torque requirements to exceed damper/actuator design. 4) Damper and actuator must be kept clean and protected from dirt, dust and other foreign materials prior to and after installation. Examples of such foreign materials include but are not limited to: a) Mortar dust b) Drywall dust c) Firesafing materials d) Wall texture e) Paint overspray ) Damper should be sufficiently covered as to prevent overspray if wall texturing or spray painting will be performed within feet of the damper. Excessive dirt or foreign material deposits on damper can cause excessive leakage and/or torque requirements to exceed damper/actuator design. 6) Caulking is not necessary, however, may be supplied to the retaining angles. 7) The Code Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) must evaluate and provide approval of final installation where variations to these instructions are necessary. 3

1. SMOKE DAMPER REQUIREMENTS Smoke dampers are required to close and prevent the passage of air and smoke through ducts or ventilation openings in smoke barriers. Smoke dampers are also applied in engineered smoke control systems to establish air pressure differentials and thereby prevent the spread of smoke.. LOCATION OF DAMPER IN DUCTWORK Place the damper assembly in its proper position relative to the barrier as shown (in figure below right). The plane of the closed damper blades must be within 4 in. (610mm) of the rated smoke barrier and before any duct inlets or outlets. On multiple section damper assemblies, the temperature rating of wiring run in the airstream shall be at least equal to the damper temperature rating plus 0 F (10 C).. SEALING THE INSTALLATION After installing the damper in the ductwork, seal the joint between the damper frame and the duct using Dow Corning RTV 73 sealant, GE100 sereis silicone construction adhesive or Component Hardware SLT-000 silicone sealant. Make sure to press the sealant into the joint to guarantee a proper seal. Use the minimum amount of material required to completely seal the joint. See Figure to the bottom. 3. ATTACHING DAMPER TO THE DUCT Attach the damper to the duct using #10 sheet metal screws, 1 /4 in. (6mm) diameter bolts and nuts, tack or spot welds, or 3 /16 in. (mm) diameter steel pop rivets. Attachments must be made at each flange spaced a maximum of 6 in. (1mm) on centers and a maximum of in. (1mm) from corners on rectangular dampers, and on round dampers as follows: Ducts in. (9mm) in diameter and smaller shall have three attachments. Ducts larger than in. (9mm) in diameter up to and including 36 in., (914mm) have five attachments. 4. INSTALLING MULTIPLE DAMPER SECTION ASSEMBLIES The damper assembly is not restricted to a maximum number of sections, but must not exceed the section sizes and assembly sizes shown below. Damper model SMD-01, 0, 03 SMD-301, 30 SMD-301M, 30M SMD-401 SMDR, SESMDR, SSSMDR SESMD-01, SSSMD-01 SMD-301V SMD-401M Maximum Single Section Size in. Standard drive slips are UL tested breakaway connections on dampers 0 in. (0mm) high and less. Installation Greenheck Dampers may be supplied with factory hemmed 0 ga. (1mm) sleeve for use with drive slip and s-slip joints. Sleeves and duct may be field hemmed by folding back the vertical sides a maximum of 1/ in. (13mm) (as shown in Figure 1) to accommodate the 1 in. (mm) wide drive slip. Join damper sleeve to duct at top and bottom sides using any S-slip (See Figure ). Drive slip connection is used to connect the vertical sides of the damper sleeve to the duct. Cut a length of drive slip connection a maximum of 4 in. (10mm) longer than the vertical duct dimension. Guide the drive slip connection onto the side members securing it over the hemmed edges until the connection extends beyond the top and bottom sides of the damper sleeve/ duct. The extra length should be hammered flat overlapping all four corners. UL CLASSIFIED (see complete marking on product) UL CLASSIFIED to Canadian safety standards (see complete marking on product) Standards UL & S Classifications Filed at UL under Listing #R13317 Part number 47664 Flange Mounted Installation INSTALLATION INSTRUCTION SUPPLEMENT SMD-xxx, SESMD-xxx, SSSMD-xxx Series Smoke Dampers 1. SMOKE DAMPER REQUIREMENTS AND APPLICATION Smoke dampers are required to close and prevent the passage of air and smoke through ducts or ventilation openings in smoke barriers. Smoke dampers are also applied in engineered smoke control systems to establish air pressure differentials and thereby prevent the spread of smoke. These dampers are designed to operate with blades running horizontally. Dampers can be vertically or horizontally installed at, in accordance with NFPA-90A, or adjacent to the point where the duct passes thru the smoke barrier.. LOCATION OF DAMPER IN DUCTWORK Place the damper assembly in its proper position relative to the barrier. The plane of the closed damper blades must be within 4 in. (610mm) of the rated smoke barrier and before any duct inlets or outlets. 3. ATTACHING DAMPER TO THE DUCT The damper is flange mounted to the duct, sleeve, or wall opening with using #10 sheet metal screws, 1/4 in. (6mm) diameter bolts and nuts, tack or spot welds, or 3/16 in. (mm) diameter steel pop rivets. Attachments must be made at each flange spaced a maximum of 6 in. (1mm) on centers and a maximum of in. (1mm) from corners. 4. SEALING THE INSTALLATION The following duct sealants may be used to seal between the dampers flange and the mating surface: PA04T duct sealant adhesive manufactured by Precision, DP1010 water base duct sealant manufactured by Design Polymetrics, Grey Pookie or Ductmate PROseal in accordance with SMACNA recommendations.. ACTUATOR CONNECTIONS Electrical and/or pneumatic connections to damper actuators should be made in accordance with wiring and piping diagrams developed in compliance with applicable codes, ordinances and regulations. 17 Damper model SMD-301, 30 SMD-301M, 30M SMD-401 SMD-401M Maximum Single Section Size in. Actuator The actuators are to be installed to function per system requirements and to be controlled by smoke detection devices. FAN ISOLATION APPLICATION For air handling equipment isolation, leakage rated dampers are designed to operate with blades running horizontally. Dampers can be installed in a vertical or horizontal position. Sealants and damper seal materials meet the requirements of NFPA90A for smoke developed rating (<0) and flame spread index (<) as tested per UL73/ ASTME4-91A/NFPA. Dampers can be attached to the fan system discharge or inlet without being 4 in. (610mm) of a smoke barrier when used as an air handling equipment isolation damper. 1 Copyright 009 Greenheck Fan Corporation Double Flange SMD Rev. 1 June 009
