Unit 1L.3: Animals and plants living in different places Taking care of the environment Skills you will learn: Observing. Estimating. Data collecting. By the end of this unit you should: Recognize that different types of organisms differ in body, shape and size. Know some places where common plants and animals live. Sort objects into groups according to their characteristics. 1
1.5.1 Life science Animals and plants living in different places. Activity: Guess the animal One of you should choose an animal - don t tell the rest of the group keep it in your mind! Give your class members clues to help them identify which animal you chose. Here is an example Can you guess which animal: It lives in the sea and land It swims very well It eats fish Its skin is very smooth When it is young it is white! And then becomes grey when bigger! 2
Activity 1: Materials: Different animal toys (camel, lion, polar bear, frog, fish) Pictures of different habitats Process Skills: Observing Sorting and classifying Your teacher will show you models of different animals. You can put the animals on the correct paper with the photo of the habitat you think they live in! Activity 2 1- Look at the following 5 animals below! 2- Discuss and describe the place where each of these animals lives. 3
What is a habitat? A habitat is a place where a living thing lives and has its needs fulfilled. For example, getting shelter, food, water, and companionship. Different living things require different habitats according to their needs. Look at the pictures on this page talk to your partner and tell them where the animals live and describe it. After you talk about all the animals, think about which animals live in the same habitat! 4
Animal Homes - match the animal to where it lives, use arrows: Life science 5
1.5.1 Different There are large habitats and small habitats. In fact, nearly every part of the world is a habitat for something. can be divided into two main habitats LAND HABITATS & WATER HABITATS Write below if it is a LAND or WATER habitat under the picture. 6
There are several different land habitats: A grassland is a dry place with a lot of grass, and has very few trees. 7
1.5.1 Life science Desert this is our local environment! And we will look at this in a bit more detail. What is a plant? What is an animal? Can you think of different plants and animals that live in the desert? Make a list below and draw what you think it looks like: Plants Animals 8
The desert is an extremely hot place. It is sunny and dry during the day and cold at night. There is sand all around. There are not many green plants in the desert because it gets very little rain. People who live in the desert get water from the wells. 9
1.5.1 Life science Plants in the desert The desert habitat has very little rain fall. There are very few green plants that have leaves and flowers. We can see wild thorny bushes in some deserts. Desert plants like cacti store water in them during the rain fall and use it later. We see date palm trees in areas where some water has collected. 10
1.5.1 Life science Animals in the desert Most of the animals found in the desert come out night, why do you think they do that? For example lizards, snakes scorpion and ants. Most of them get water from the food they catch Living things need water! 11
1.5.1 Life science Let s focus on an animal you must have seen! Some of you may have touched or even ridden it! The Camel The ship of the desert ا ف ل ا ي نظ ر ون ا ل ى ال ا ب ل ك ي ف خ ل ق ت Do they not look at the camels, how they are created? (Al-Ghashiya/17) Ask yourself..and dicuss with your teacher!! Why does a camel have a hump? Why does it have such wide feet? Why do camels have long eye lashes? A Camel is also called the ship of the desert because it can walk in the desert for many days without food and water. It has a hump on its back. Whenever it gets the chance to drink water or eat it stores the extra energy, for times when it can t find food or water. 12
