Unit 1L.3: Animals and plants living in different places Taking care of the environment Skills you will learn: Observing. Estimating. Data collecting. By the end of this unit you should: Recognize that different types of organisms differ in body, shape and size. Know some places where common plants and animals live. Sort objects into groups according to their characteristics. 1

1.5.1 Life science Animals and plants living in different places. Activity: Guess the animal One of you should choose an animal - don t tell the rest of the group keep it in your mind! Give your class members clues to help them identify which animal you chose. Here is an example Can you guess which animal: It lives in the sea and land It swims very well It eats fish Its skin is very smooth When it is young it is white! And then becomes grey when bigger! 2

Activity 1: Materials: Different animal toys (camel, lion, polar bear, frog, fish) Pictures of different habitats Process Skills: Observing Sorting and classifying Your teacher will show you models of different animals. You can put the animals on the correct paper with the photo of the habitat you think they live in! Activity 2 1- Look at the following 5 animals below! 2- Discuss and describe the place where each of these animals lives. 3

What is a habitat? A habitat is a place where a living thing lives and has its needs fulfilled. For example, getting shelter, food, water, and companionship. Different living things require different habitats according to their needs. Look at the pictures on this page talk to your partner and tell them where the animals live and describe it. After you talk about all the animals, think about which animals live in the same habitat! 4

Animal Homes - match the animal to where it lives, use arrows: Life science 5

1.5.1 Different There are large habitats and small habitats. In fact, nearly every part of the world is a habitat for something. can be divided into two main habitats LAND HABITATS & WATER HABITATS Write below if it is a LAND or WATER habitat under the picture. 6

There are several different land habitats: A grassland is a dry place with a lot of grass, and has very few trees. 7

1.5.1 Life science Desert this is our local environment! And we will look at this in a bit more detail. What is a plant? What is an animal? Can you think of different plants and animals that live in the desert? Make a list below and draw what you think it looks like: Plants Animals 8

The desert is an extremely hot place. It is sunny and dry during the day and cold at night. There is sand all around. There are not many green plants in the desert because it gets very little rain. People who live in the desert get water from the wells. 9

1.5.1 Life science Plants in the desert The desert habitat has very little rain fall. There are very few green plants that have leaves and flowers. We can see wild thorny bushes in some deserts. Desert plants like cacti store water in them during the rain fall and use it later. We see date palm trees in areas where some water has collected. 10

1.5.1 Life science Animals in the desert Most of the animals found in the desert come out night, why do you think they do that? For example lizards, snakes scorpion and ants. Most of them get water from the food they catch Living things need water! 11

1.5.1 Life science Let s focus on an animal you must have seen! Some of you may have touched or even ridden it! The Camel The ship of the desert ا ف ل ا ي نظ ر ون ا ل ى ال ا ب ل ك ي ف خ ل ق ت Do they not look at the camels, how they are created? (Al-Ghashiya/17) Ask yourself..and dicuss with your teacher!! Why does a camel have a hump? Why does it have such wide feet? Why do camels have long eye lashes? A Camel is also called the ship of the desert because it can walk in the desert for many days without food and water. It has a hump on its back. Whenever it gets the chance to drink water or eat it stores the extra energy, for times when it can t find food or water. 12

1.5.1 Life in a forest Discuss the following questions! 1. What makes a forest different to the desert? 2. Here are some pictures of animals (on the right) that live in the forest do you know what they are called? 3. Can you think of other animals that live in the forest? 4. Do you think you could live in a forest? Why? Forests are warm, rainy, and wet. There are a lot of tall trees and thick plants in the forest because there is a lot of rain. The trees and plants are the food and shelter for many animals. Forests are the homes for many wild animals ranging from big animals like elephants and tigers to small birds like parrots and sparrows. 13

Now we will look at There are three water habitats: Lake, Ponds and Oceans LAKE 14

A pond is pool of standing fresh water (which does not have salt), either natural or man-made, that is usually smaller than a lake. Do you know of any animals that live in a pond? Do you know the names of these animals? 15

1.5.1 Life in the Polar Regions - your teacher will show you where the north and south poles are on a model globe like this The Polar Regions are the North and South poles. The weather in the poles is very cold, windy and snowy. In winters the plants die. In the summer some ice melts and flowers grow. 16

1.5.1 Life science Activity 1: Write the correct habitat next to where you think the animal lives! Use the words..ocean, DESERT, POLAR REGION, FOREST, POND, GRASSLAND Habitat Animal 17

1.5.1 Activity 2: Choose the correct word. 1. Animals live wherever they can find food, water and a. air b. shelter c. books 2. Animals need to get energy and survive. a. light b. food c. house 3. Deserts are a. hot and dry b. wet and rainy 4. Most forests are a. warm and wet b. cold and snowy 5. There are lots of in the forest. a. tall trees b. palm trees c. cactus 18

Activity 2: Put ( ) or ( X ): 1. The desert is very hot. ( ) 2. The forest is dry. ( ) 3. We can see palm trees in the forest. ( ) 4. There are palm trees in the desert. ( ) 5. Camels live in the forest. ( ) Activity 3: 1- Name the habitat given in the picture and classify the following animals in these habitats: elephant lizard camel tiger Habitat ----------------- Animals 19

Activity 4: Complete the given sentences, using the following words: snow, salty, cold, fresh, large, small 1. The ocean has water. It is. 2. The pond usually has a amount of water in it. It is water. 3. Polar regions are very. 4. We can see everywhere in Arctic. Project Create a model habitat, choose the suitable animals and plants which live in it such as fish in the sea, bird in a tree. Key ideas: Plants and animals live in different places. are different in weather conditions and the type of surface it is. 20 Key words: Air Water Desert Ocean Forest Pond Arctic Plants Animals

Everything needs to be taken care of! Your teacher has brought in a goldfish Life science Think about the following: What does the fish eat? Where do other fish like sharks live? What do you think we should do to keep the fish alive? Draw a picture of the fish here: Below write one sentences about the fish...for example, what shape it is, what colour it is, how many eyes it has, where it lives, what it eats, etc.. 21

1.5.1 Life science Taking care of your Environment We should take care of the environment and keep it clean. If we will keep our surroundings clean then there will be less germs and diseases and we will be healthy. We should try to follow the do s and don ts for keeping the environment healthy and green. Only then our Earth will be happy. Discuss with your teacher: How do you look after your environment?! 22

The do s: 1. We should plant more trees. 2. We should clean the beaches regularly. 3. We should throw all rubbish in the bin. 4. We should try to recycle our waste as much as possible 23

The don ts: 1. We should not cut down trees as they are the homes for birds and small animals. 2. We should not throw the litter as it makes our environment dirty and spread the germs. 3. We should not throw our litter especially in areas like the beach! 24

What do you think about the following pictures? Discuss with your teacher what you see in the pictures. What is it? What has happened? Is it damaging to the environment What is effected by this damage? We need to look after plants and animals because: Islam teaches us to respect the environment They play a role in keeping things balanced in the planet Some are food for other animals. When we look after the natural environment around us, protect and make sure it is not being damaged we call it CONSERVATION 25

1.5.1 Visit a local park or nature reserve During the visit students observe using all their senses and answer the following questions: What kinds of plants are in the habitat? What animals can we see? What will the animals feed on? Where will the plants and animals get water from? What is the habitat like? Is it shady, sunny, damp, dry? Al Wabra Wildlife Preservation in Qatar you can see many animals in their habitats! 26

Activity 1: Put ( ) or ( X ) 1. We should cut the trees. ( ) 2. Littering is good for our environment. ( ) 3. Our environment should be clean and green. ( ) 4. Recycling is good for our environment. ( ) Key ideas: Plants and animals live in our environment. We should keep our environment clean and green. If we harm our environment then the small animals lose their homes and habitats. Key words: Environment Clean Green Trees Plants Animals Conserve 27
