Fact Sheet MERPAN WG Fungicide A water dispersible granule containing 800g/kg captan. MERPAN is based on captan, a broad-spectrum fungicide that has been widely used for over 30 years. In New Zealand it is registered for control of a wide variety of diseases on many crops. Read the label carefully for recommendations on specific crops and diseases. It is not effective on powdery mildew and rusts. MERPAN is a protectant fungicide and should be applied before fungal spores germinate. Apply MERPAN early in the season and continue application as recommended on a regular schedule throughout the season while disease pressure is low. Intervals between applications are typically 7 days but can vary from 5 to 21 days depending on factors influencing disease development, particularly weather conditions. Coverage is important. Use correctly calibrated equipment to obtain maximum coverage of top and undersides of leaves, flowers, fruit and other parts of the plant where target diseases are likely germinate. This typically involves using nozzles that will create small droplets and air blast equipment adjusted to obtain even coverage If disease pressure builds up or at key stages in plant growth, change to specific recommended fungicides or fungicide programmes known to be effective in your local area. Captan breaks down in moist air and may be washed off by heavy rain. Reapplication of MERPAN may be necessary after prolonged humid conditions or heavy rain. DIRECTIONS FOR USE: The rates suggested are for high volume spraying to run-off. For concentrate spraying adjust dilution rate accordingly.
FRUIT CROPS: Apples, Pears Black Spot, Glomerella, Sooty Blotch, Ripe Spot 75-125g/100 Apply the high rate every 7 days from greentip through to petal fall. Captan products may increase the risk of russet on some varieties. Where this is of concern use alternative materials between full bloom and second cover. Where Glomerella, Ripe Spot or Sooty Blotch are a problem use the high rate from January to harvest. Do not apply to Anjou Pears. Blueberries Stem Blight, 125g/100 Spray just before flowering; at 10% flowers open; at petal fall; and every 10-14 days until harvest. Boysenberries, Loganberries, other Brambles Canespot Apply at petal fall and repeat every 10-14 days until harvest. Citrus Brown Rot 125-240 g/100 litres water Red and Black Currants As a skirt spray before winter rains. Thoroughly wet trees to a height of 1 metre. Repeat 10 weeks later. OR Spray entire tree in autumn and repeat 4-6 weeks later. Do not use oil products within 14 days either side of Merpan Fungicide. Apply every 10-14 days from green tip until harvest. Gooseberry Apply just before flowering; again at petal fall; pre-harvest and post-harvest. For Flower Rot, application at 5-7 days intervals over flowering may be necessary, depending on the weather. Grapes Dead arm, Anthracnose, Apply every 14 days, commencing when shoots are 5-8 cm long. Raspberries Cane Spot, Sour Blight, Main Crop: Apply every 10-14 days from greentip until harvest. Autumn Crop: Apply every 10-14 days from November until harvest. Thorough coverage is essential. Stonefruit Brown Rot, Scab, Shothole Apply every 7 days from bud movement until bloom, then at 3-4 day intervals until petal fall, then fortnightly until 3 weeks before harvest. Apply weekly until harvest.

Merpan fungicide does not contain a sticker. A suitable sticker should be added to the stock solution. Contact your local representative for further advice. Ensure treated seed is clearly labelled. For control of Seed rot and Damping off use as a preplanting dip within 6 hours of cutting WITHHOLDING PERIODS Blueberries, Currants, Gooseberries, Raspberries, Strawberries: Cucurbits Lettuce, Stonefruit: Boysenberries, Loganberries, other Brambles, Carrots, Pipfruit: Grapes: Citrus: Export crops: Treated seed: DO NOT APPLY LATER THAN 1 DAY BEFORE HARVEST DO NOT APPLY LATER THAN 3 DAYS BEFORE DO NOT APPLY LATER THAN 7 DAYS BEFORE DO NOT APPLY LATER THAN 14 DAYS BEFORE DO NOT APPLY LATER THAN 21 DAYS BEFORE DO NOT APPLY LATER THAN 28 DAYS BEFORE HARVEST Consult your exporter for advice about any restrictions DO NOT USE TREATED SEED FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION, STOCK OR POULTRY FOOD. MIXING PROCEDURE: Half fill the spray tank with water. Engage pump agitation. Add the required amount of MERPAN to the half filled spray tank then complete tank filling, continuing to agitate the mixture during filling and use.
When tank mixing MERPAN with another product, ensure products are added in the following order with tank agitation running. 1. First add MERPAN to the half-filled tank. 2. Add any fungicides and insecticides to a ¾ full tank with agitation running. Add WG s, WP s followed by SC s and EW s. 3. If adding foliar fertilisers such as Calcium Chloride (CaCl), or Calcium Nitrate (CaNO3) or a surfactant, these must always be added last. Refer to the specific product labels for any preparation required before adding to the spray tank. 4. Do not leave mixed spray standing overnight. COMPATIBILITY: MERPAN is compatible with most commonly used pesticides. It should not be combined with Bordeaux mixture, lime sulphur, oils or dicofol. If used in combination with sulphur on Kidds Orange, Delicious and some sulphur-shy varieties, some leaf spotting and drop may occur. Tank mixing with emulsifiable concentrates is not recommended and MERPAN should not be applied shortly before or after an oil-containing formulation. In some instances foaming of the dilute product may be observed in the tank. This is not uncommon when mixing captan formulations with other horticultural products. It is important to follow the mixing order described on the label of the relevant mixture partners. The use of an approved anti-foaming agent may be required with other captan formulations but is not normally necessary with MERPAN. RESISTANCE MANAGEMENT: Fungal diseases have not developed resistance to captan. MERPAN can be used to prolong the usefulness of specific fungicides by using it in a resistance management program. Information on these programs is available from crop advice specialists. IMPORTANT: This is not the registered label. Always read the label before using this product and follow label instructions.
