Academic Orientation Program Sustainable Living at MSU

Personal Computers You can find Energy Star labels on almost every type of office equipment; computers (desktop and laptop), printers, etc. Laptops/tablets consume much less energy than desktop computers. Opt for a 15 size; an Energy Star computer monitor is large enough to view easily and does not use as much energy as a desktop computer. For more information, visit www.energystar.gov.

Energy Star Printers Avoid printing; use electronic files as much as possible. On most printers, you can find the Energy Star label. Recycle all ink cartridges in approved packaging and containers. Purchase MSU etokens online for printing at MSU.

Energy Star TVs TVs use more energy than any other home electronic device, even when they re not turned on. Energy Star -qualified LED TVs use even less energy than standard units. You can find the Energy Star on many varieties of TVs. For more information, visit www.energystar.gov.

Energy Star Music Devices Buy small they use less energy and take up less space: you cannot use the full range of a large system in consideration of your neighbors, anyway. Buy a combo unit: (Alarm clock / CD player / ipod dock) Look for Energy Star.

Energy Star Refrigerators Share ONE between roommates. Size: Five cubic feet or less. Compact refrigerators may use almost as much as full-size unless they are Energy Star -approved.

Energy Star Refrigerators Consider these brands: Frigidaire Whirlpool Haier Kenmore Microfridge Black & Decker For more information, visit energystar.gov.

Sustainable-Friendly Power Strips Many power strips provide the ease of powering down all electronics with one button. Best Option: Smart Power Strip (www.energystar.gov) Eliminates phantom electricity usage. Saves electricity related to appliances that continue to consume electricity even when turned off or in the standby state. No need to switch device on/off.

Sustainable Lighting Turn off lights and electronics whenever you leave the room; use daylight when possible. Use Compact Fluorescent Lights (CFLs) or LED instead of conventional light bulbs. CFLs are just as bright, but use 75% less energy and last 16x longer. LEDs use even less energy! Using task lighting (lamps) instead of overhead fluorescent lights saves energy.

Water Conservation Turn off the faucet while brushing your teeth, shaving or washing dishes. Keep your showers to five minutes. Even better, consider turning off the shower while you are soaping up. Avoid flushing the toilet unnecessarily. Dispose of tissues, insects and other such waste in the trash. Report dripping faucets immediately to facilities staff.

Sustainable Laundry Practices Drying rack: Air-drying your laundry takes NO energy and keeps items in better shape! Use biodegradable detergents (brands like Seventh Generation, ECOS, etc.). Never use hot water! Choose warm for soiled clothing and cold for everything else.

Carpeting You can pre-order a sized, top-quality plush carpet at a special student discount and have it waiting on campus at move-in! Recycle your carpet tube when you move in. Recycle your carpet when you move out. For more info, visit the University Activities Board online at www.uabevents.com. To order carpeting, call 1-800-892-8729 or visit www.uabevents.com/carpet.

Outfitting Your Room The UAB Residence Hall Linen Program provides value-packed savings on specialty bed linens, guaranteed to fit MSU beds. To order linens, call 1-800-957-4338 or visit www.uabevents.com/linens. Visit www.uabevents.com for more information.

Plants Make Your Space Greener Green plants are not only a great way to liven up your living space, they re also one of the most organic and natural ways to clean the air around you.

Personal Grooming Needs Unplug appliances after every use regardless of shut-off features avoid phantom energy use. Consider Energy Star models when available.

Waste Reduction At movie-in, recycle cardboard boxes, boxboard, polystyrene, all plastics and carpet tubes. Look for the bright green Recycle signs. Reuse scrap paper. Buy items that do not have excessive packaging. Use grocery bags as waste bags or recycle them. Use reusable plates, cups and silverware instead of disposable paper/plastic ones.

Waste Reduction Use the mesh recycling bag provided in your room to recycle in your residence hall lobby: Cardboard All plastics and household metals White paper Mixed paper and boxboard Newspaper Glass Use reusable containers for water, coffee and other liquids. Instead of purchasing bottled water, use the Spartan water bottle provided in your room and refill it at your hall s filtered water station.

No Need To Purchase Many items are available for check-out from the Service Center, including: Brooms and dustpans Vacuums Mops Basic tool kits

Sustainable Dining Consider trayless dining to reduce food waste, conserve energy, soap and water. Professional chefs prepare fresh food daily, with a variety of choices: Take only what you will eat; make healthy choices!

Bailey GREENhouse The hoophouse is located in Brody Neighborhood on the grounds of Bailey Hall! Home to MSU s Residential Initiative on the Study of the Environment (RISE) program, students are planting, growing and harvesting herbs and microgreens throughout the semester and into the future. Students learn firsthand how a local food cycle can help cultivate environmental responsibility, healthy citizens and farms for the future. Compost made from food waste will be used for planting in the Bailey GREENhouse.

Sustainable Food Sources Look for the Grown at MSU logo for campus grown, certified-organic produce from the Bailey GREENHouse and Sutdent Organic Farm used at several dining halls. Culinary Services provides fair trade-certified coffee in all Sparty s locations. Our Farm to MSU Program connects Michigan products to the MSU community. MSU has a strong partnership with the Greater Lansing Food Bank for donations to the Greater Lansing Community.

Recycle @ Sparty s All packaging material used at Sparty s locations is recyclable. Purchase a Sparty s refillable mug at all Sparty s locations. Help us stay green: Please recycle your coffee cup, bag or box. Utilize a refillable Sparty s mug reduce, reuse and refill.
