ONTARIO TIRE STEWARDSHIP 2016 STUDENT DESIGN CHALLENGE Site Location Revealed! Artscape Youngplace INTRODUCTORY PACKAGE

CONCEPT What is the Ontario Tire Stewardship (OTS) OTS is a not-for-profit organization that ensures all of Ontario s scrap tires get recycled by Ontario companies into new products. OTS works with a network of stewards, collectors, haulers, processors and innovative recycled product manufacturers to ensure a more sustainable future. Together, we rethink tires into new products to create a multi-million dollar industry and hundreds of new jobs in Ontario, while diverting more than 85 million tires from landfills. We believe in community, innovation and sustainability. To celebrate this we are proud to host our 3rd Ontario Tire Stewardship Student Design Challenge within the field of landscape architecture and industrial design. What s the goal? The goal of the challenge is to ignite creativity and innovation in the field of environmental landscape architecture and industrial design while showcasing the aesthetics, functionality and high performance of Ontario tire-derived products. The winning design teams will receive a scholarship prize as outlined below: (2) Grand prizes, one per section, totaling $3,000 each (2) Runner-up prizes, one per section, totaling $2,000 each (2) Third place prizes, one per section, totaling $1,000 each This year, we re adding a secondary element to our challenge industrial design to encourage ingenuity and student entrepreneurship. What s the challenge? As with previous years, the competition aims to create a unique opportunity for design leaders of tomorrow to develop conceptual proposals and influence real construction at the Artscape Youngplace. The competition will be open to all design, architecture and landscape students currently enrolled at a post-secondary institution in Ontario. 1

CHALLENGE LAYOUT Students will be tasked to redesign a site s landscape elements and outdoor fixtures incorporating recycled tire-derived products. The design challenge will comprise of a three-day Design Jam where students will assemble at Artscape Youngplace to view and study the area to be redesigned. Students will incorporate sustainability, through the use of recycled rubber products, inventiveness in their design and teamwork within their urban and industrial design projects. This year s challenge will feature two separate competition categories: 1. LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN 2. INDUSTRIAL DESIGN Teams will be comprised of 3 to 4 students each and can either submit a proposal for both challenge sections or for one individually. Each participating group will receive information on regulations and guidelines to ensure their designs are considered eligible for the competition. The two sections will be evaluated based on industry standards and site specifications and judged by a panel of industry professionals. The winning designs will be the inspiration for the site s redesign with construction currently scheduled to begin in Fall 2016. The completed site will be showcased at the Reveal a reception attended by participants, prominent media, sponsors, site staff, VIP guests and community members, hosted by OTS. 2

THE OTS DESIGN JAM The Design Jam will take place June 3 5, 2016 at Artscape Youngplace in the West Queen West neighbourhood of downtown Toronto. DAY 1 JUNE 3 DAY 2 JUNE 4 DAY 3 JUNE 5 Workshop participants will engage in informative presentations outlining the specific site design challenge, tire-derived materials, and general sustainable design principles applicable to the site. No detailed site specifications or pre-read will be made accessible in advance. Students will begin their design process at the end of the day. Students will continue to develop their designs. Groups will have access to OTS product samples and select representatives to answer questions about products, site functionality, site parameters and other important design considerations. This will be a free day with no restrictions to ensure you and your team have the flexibility to accommodate individual work styles. Groups will present their concepts to a panel of judges. The judges a mix of industry experts, academics, site hosts and OTS representatives will evaluate each group s final design concept.
