Installation 1) Component Matching AVS air handlers are matched to the appropriate PRIME compressor unit as shown in Figure 1a. Electric strip heat is customer specified and field installed. ETI ships the appropriate Air Handler Kit for field installation. Depending on the application, Air Handlers might also need to be ordered with a Down Flow kit or a Horizontal Right kit, see section Air Handler Orientation page 21 for more information. 2) Air Handler Placement WARNING! WEAR ADEQUATE PROTECTIVE CLOTHING AND PRACTICE ALL APPLICABLE SAFETEY PRECAUTIONS WHILE INSTALLING THIS EQUIPMENT. FAILURE TO DO SO MAY RESULT IN EQUIPMENT AND/OR PROPERTY DAMAGE, PERSONAL INJURY OR DEATH. Guidelines for the air handler placement relative to the compressor unit and other EarthLinked system components are shown in Figure 2. Figure 2. 3) Refrigeration Line Sets Line set sizes connecting to the matching components are listed in Figure 4. Line sets from compressor unit to air handler (or cased coil, hydronic water module) and the earth loop line set (at the vertical rise to the outdoor compressor, or at the entrance to the residence) are to be insulated with Armaflex, Insul- Lock or equivalent tubing insulation at least ½ wall thickness. For interior living areas, thicker walled insulation will reduce sound level. LINE SET ADAPTERS REQUIRED FOR THE AIR HANDLER, CASED COIL, HYDRONIC WATER MODULE AND DOMESTIC WATER MODULE ARE FIELD SUPPLIED. Line Set Sizes Both liquid and vapor lines running between the compressor unit and the air handler must be separated by an air space, as illustrated in Figure 5, to ensure system performance. The lines shall not be bundled by tying them together or by running both lines together, in contact with one another, within a single conduit, such as PVC pipe. AVS-IM (03/16) Page 9
Figure 5. Air Handler and Cased Coil Line Set Separation TECH TIP: when installing a condensate on an Air Handler, a clean out and vacuum break should be installed. The proper location for this is between the condensate drain trap and the Air Handler itself. This will prevent condensate from the trap from being drawn into the air handler on start up. 3) Dual Stage Relay The model RDS-1872 dual stage relay is included in the field installed Prime Air Handler kit (AHPS-KIT) for application to the AVS air handlers used in conjunction with the PRIME series compressor unit models PSC, PSD, and PSDH. The relay matches the air handler delivery rate with the first and second stage operation of the compressor unit to optimize cooling comfort and economy of operation. See the Air Handler Kit Installation Manual for complete details. Because the CLASSIC series compressor unit models SC, SD, ad SDH contain single stage compressors, the dual stage relay is not required for these systems (and is therefore not included in the Classic Air Handler kit). IMPORTANT! Four-speed AVS Air Handlers are not recommended for air zoning applications. For air zoning applications you should use variable speed AVV air handlers. AVS-IM (03/16) Page 18
Airflow Airflow selection is based on providing 400 cfm/ton of nominal capacity. Arcoaire air flow performance data for various tap settings are shown in Figure 14. Figure 14. Arcoaire Aiflow Performance Tables AVS-IM (03/16) Page 19
Air Handler Orientation The AVS series air handlers are applied in either in the vertical or horizontal orientations. The installer positions the distributor and feeder tubes to ensure that the distributor is vertical (pointed up or down) as shown in Figure 15. ETI provides the Air Handler Kit with detailed instructions concerning this procedure. Figure 15. Typical Coil Orientation AVS-IM (03/16) Page 20
In case of a vertical application with a downflow orientation, Air Handlers need be ordered with the matching Down Flow kit: COMPRESSOR UNIT MODEL/CAPACITY DOWN FLOW KIT MODEL 024, 025 DFKS-2425 030 through 060 DFKS-3060 ARCOAIRE COMPONENTS - Downflow Base kit (EBACO2NCB) - Gasket kit (EBACO1GSK) - Downflow Base kit (EBACO3NCB) - Gasket kit (EBACO1GSK) Figure 16.
