AN INTRODUCTION TO YOUR LOG BOOK This fire safety logbook has been prepared to assist building owners, managers and other responsible persons to co-ordinate and maintain a fire safety record keeping system. Whilst this book is not comprehensive it seeks to cover the main requirements for demonstrating compliance with current fire safety legislation. It is recommended that this logbook is kept in a loose leaf format with new record keeping pages photocopied or downloaded from our website when required. The logbook should be kept up to date and readily accessible for inspection by the enforcing authority when required. It should be noted that it is an offence for a person to knowingly make a false entry. FIRE EVACUATION FOR DISABLED CUSTOMERS In the event of a fire or similar emergency the.. will assist any disabled customers to evacuate to the rendezvous point. DO NOT STOP TO COLLECT PERSONAL BELONGINGS. FIRE ACTION FOR VISITORS TO SITE In the event of a fire or similar emergency, visitors on site are to evacuate to the rendezvous point which is DO NOT LEAVE THE SITE WITHOUT INFORMING THE MANAGER. STAFF FIRE INSTRUCTIONS AND DRILLS Fire instructions should be given to staff so that they are aware of the following:- What to do if they discover a fire How to sound the fire alarm What to do if they hear the fire alarm Where the fire extinguishers are located and how to use them (if safe to do so) The escape routes from the building The whereabouts of the assembly points How to call the Fire Service The arrangements for the evacuation of people with special needs The dangers associated with the obstruction of fire exits and the wedging open of fire resisting doors Instructions should be given:- As soon as possible at the commencement of employment Every year Fire Drills should be carried out:- At least twice a year All employees MUST evacuate the premises regardless of seniority or commitments SURESITE LTD. FIRE ALARM SYSTEM The fire alarm test should be carried out in accordance with the manufacturer s instructions. IT IS IMPORTANT THAT ANY TESTING OF THE FIRE ALARM SHOULD NOT RESULT IN A FALSE SIGNAL OF FIRE DAILY - Inspect the panel for normal operation of the system. Where provided, check that the connection to the monitoring centre is functioning correctly. WEEKLY - namely :- Test and examine to ensure that the system is capable of operating under alarm conditions, Operate trigger device (manual call point or detector) or end of line switch on a zone circuit. Zones should be tested in strict rotation, each zone being tested at least quarterly for a monitored system and weekly for an unmonitored system. Each time a zone is tested a different trigger device should be used. Where appropriate, inform the monitoring centre prior to the test. Examination of batteries and connections, including electrolyte level. QUARTERLY AND ANNUAL INSPECTION AND TEST - These should be carried out by a competent person. FIRE DETECTORS Regular visual inspection of detectors for damage, unusual accumulation of dirt, heavy coats of paint and other conditions likely to interfere with the correct operation of the detector. All detectors should be checked and tested for correct operation and sensitivity in accordance with manufacturer s instructions and current British Standard. SURESITE LTD. All rights reserved. EMERGENCY LIGHTING SYSTEM The emergency lighting test should be carried out in accordance with the manufacturer s instructions. WEEKLY - Places of entertainment only as per monthly. MONTHLY Simulation of the failure of normal lighting supply for sufficient time to allow all luminaires to be checked for proper function. 6 MONTHLY Simulate the failure of the normal lighting supply for a continuous period of 1 hour for a 3 hour system or 15 minutes for a 1 hour system. Check all luminaires for proper function. 1 AND 3 YEARLY - New installations should be inspected after 3 years and thereafter annually by a suitably qualified engineer. An inspection and test certificate (as recommended in the current British Standard) should be completed and given to the owner / occupier of the premises. N.B: All checks, tests and maintenance including faults and actions taken to rectify such should be recorded. The date faults are rectified should also be recorded. SURESITE LTD. All rights reserved. FIREFIGHTING EQUIPMENT FIRE EXTINGUISHERS The portable fire extinguisher(s) test should be carried out in accordance with the manufacturer s instructions. MONTHLY - Check to ensure they are in position, not discharged, damaged or have lost pressure (if fitted with a pressure indicator) ANNUALLY - Portable fire fighting equipment should be inspected by a competent person in accordance with the manufacturer s instructions.
