The proposal Proposed elevations The Aldi food store Aldi proposes to redevelop the site of Peggs DIY on Leeming Lane South with a new food store to serve the local community. The new store would have a net sales area of approximately 1,254m 2 with free customer car parking. The proposed building has been carefully positioned to sit comfortably within the site and designed to be in-keeping with the surrounding area. The store would have a two storey frontage, decreasing to a single storey at the rear of the building. Local employment opportunities The new foodstore will create up to 40 new job opportunities, including managerial positions as well as additional construction jobs and supply chain opportunities. Aldi aims to provide flexible jobs for local people and aims for all of its store managers to be local. Complementing the local area Unlike other, larger retailers, Aldi has a unique offering and does not act as a one-stop shop. Our stores meet only a proportion of customers convenience needs, meaning they will continue to use other local shops to fulfil their grocery shopping requirements.
Design and landscaping design The development has been designed to provide a high-quality and attractive discount food store. Aldi has carefully considered its proposals to ensure the scale of the building is in-keeping with its surroundings and fits comfortably within its location. The new store would feature a mono pitch roof with a two storey frontage, reducing to single storey at the rear of the building. The proposed materials have been selected to offer a contemporary, high-quality design with attractive landscaping. A combination of materials will be used including high levels of glazing and cladding around the entrance and main facades to ensure a modern appearance. landscaping Aldi takes great pride in the style and design of its stores, with landscaping a key part of creating an attractive, welcoming and visually appealing development. New landscaping is proposed around the site boundaries to enhance the appearance of the area. This will include a mix of low level, hardy shrubs, providing year round cover. CGI of the proposed store
Highways and car parking Proposed site layout Access A new vehicle access point is proposed off Leeming Lane South. The site is well-situated for a new food store, easily accessible for the Woodhouse community and other local customer catchment areas. Traffic The traffic impact on the proposed development will be examined through a Transport Assessment, which will be prepared as part of the planning application. This assessment will look at the operation of the local highway network, including Leeming Lane South and the A6117, with and without the proposed development in place. Car parking The proposed store will include approximately 108 parking spaces including six disabled and six parent & child spaces. As part of Aldi s commitment to promoting sustainable modes of transport wherever possible, cycle parking would also be provided at the store. Deliveries An Aldi food store is a modest scale supermarket. Aldi stocks a carefully selected range of approximately 1,500 lines, compared to a typical supermarket such as Asda or Sainsbury s, which stock in excess of 20,000 lines. As a result, an Aldi food store will generally require only three to four main deliveries per day, supplemented by a daily milk delivery. Aldi operates a closely managed servicing arrangement for each of its stores. All manoeuvring takes place within the site and a unique delivery ramp arrangement removes the need for external activity. This process is not only efficient but also reduces noise disturbance to neighbouring properties.
Local issues The existing site Being a part of the local community Aldi stores are often located close to local communities. As a result, Aldi has developed a number of community friendly practices: Aldi aims for its store managers to be local, which allows them to react quickly and sympathetically to any local issues The unique delivery system used by Aldi enables products to be transferred directly from the vehicle straight into the store, without the need for external movement of goods. This reduces external activity and the potential for inconvenience to neighbours Unlike most supermarkets that operate extended or 24hr opening periods, Aldi stores typically open between 8am and 10pm Monday to Saturday with opening hours on Sunday between 10am and 4pm Aldi is committed to being a responsible neighbour and will work closely with the local community to ensure that any disturbance is kept to a minimum through from construction to when the store is open About Peggs DIY Founded in in 1967, Peggs DIY is a local business that has been trading at its current site on Leeming Lane South since 1976. The store provides great value DIY goods, timber & sheet materials, as well as garden and decorating products, with a wealth of knowledge and friendly staff. Following the announcement of the proposed new Aldi food store on the site, Peggs DIY is trading as usual and will continue to do so throughout the planning process. If Aldi is granted planning permission, Peggs DIY will trade for approximately four months before closure.
