Energy Saving What does it mean to United Living? Energy saving means alot to us at United Living, put simply it means reducing the environmental impact of our construction and refurbishment operations and taking real steps to reduce carbon emissions from our offices, transportation and our sites. Building and working in sustainable ways is vitally important, but sustainability also extends to the communities in which we work, helping to improve the quality of life by providing well designed homes in vibrant mixed neighbourhoods, with better opportunities for employment, education, healthcare and leisure. Fuel poverty is a growing issue for our residents. Our expertise of working in resident properties, combined with our knowledge of energy efficiency positions us well to deliver ECO and Green solutions within our communities. Through experience gained during CESP and more latterly ECO, we have delivered solutions to combat fuel poverty to both social and private homes, combining funding alongside operational innovation to create warmer, safer and more affordable homes. This pack will provide you with tips and ideas that will allow you to make a positive impact on the planet - and save money at the same time! 4 of 12 We are always looking for ways in which we can reduce the impact we have on the environment. 5 of 12

Save money by saving energy It s simple! In the kitchen Put lids on saucepans; food will cook quicker and save you money. Don t leave the fridge door open and defrost it regularly. Use your washing machine only when full. Setting the temperature to 30 C not 40 C will save around 10 per year. Drying clothes outside in the summer months will save you up to 20 per year. Only boil the amount of kettle water you need and save around 10 per year. When a room is empty, make sure that the lights are turned off to save around 10 per year. Having regular hot meals and drinks will help to keep you warm in the winter. 6 of 12 7 of 12

In the bathroom Is your water too hot? If you have a hot water tank check your cylinder thermostat to make sure it is set to exactly 60 C/140 F. (To prevent Legionnaires your hot water tank must never be less than 60 C/140 F.) Having a shower instead of a bath will reduce hot water consumption by about 50%, saving around 45 per year. Fixing dripping taps as soon as possible; one hot water tap can waste the same amount of water as one hot bath in a week. Don t leave the tap running when you brush your teeth. Reduce your shower by 1 minute and save 15 annually. In the living room Move furniture away from radiators to improve air flow. Close curtains and doors at dusk to stop draughts. Keep the temperature between 18 21 C turning the temperature down by 1 C could save you around 65 a year. Set your heating timer so that it comes on just before you wake up and before you get home at night. You could save between 50 and 80 by not leaving the appliances on standby or on charge unnecessarily. Replace light bulbs with energy efficient ones. One energy efficient bulb can save around 45 over its lifetime of about 15 years. 8 of 12 9 of 12

Recycling Up to 60% of the rubbish that ends up in the dustbin could be recycled. Around 16% of the cost of any product pays for the packaging, which ends up as rubbish. 70% less energy is required to recycle paper compared with making it from raw materials. One recycled tin can would save enough energy to power a television for three hours. One recycled plastic bottle would save enough energy to power a 60-watt light bulb for three hours. In the bedroom When it s really cold, thermal underwear, bed socks and even a hat can all help to keep you warm. Using a hot water bottle or an electric blanket is another way to keep warm in the night, but never both together. Turn the radiator on in the bedroom half an hour before you go to bed and turn it off in the morning. The bedroom can be kept at 18 C and still be comfortable. In rooms you use less often turn the heating down using the radiator valves.
