The anti-wallpaper wallpaper A new trend in wallpaper seems ironic: seeking wallpaper that doesn t look like wallpaper. But that s exactly what many hotels are choosing in order to get the best of both worlds a unique look with the quality and properties of traditional smooth wallpaper. At 70 park avenue hotel in New York City, a Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants property, the guestrooms are covered in a vinyl wallpaper that resembles the color and texture of wood, and the hallways showcase a textured, ribbed vinyl in a custom-made shade of blue. The new wallcoverings provide a different approach to traditional hotel décor by highlighting texture combinations in unusual areas, said Erika Nelson, the hotel s GM. In addition to providing a stylish and sleeker look, the wallcoverings are durable and reduce the need for frequent replacements. As hotels trade in printed bedspreads for white or plain-colored duvets, the need for an additional design aspect whether print, texture or color spreads to the walls. At 70 park avenue, the hotel s intent is to attract guests with the lobby s wallcoverings, and then welcome and comfort guests throughout the stay in the hallways and guestrooms.
