Open Space and Trails Committee 2014 Economic Benefits of Open Space Workshop

Workshop Goal: Explore Economic Benefits of Open Space Economic Benefits & Economic Development MAGIC! Open Space Preservation & Design

I am a DEVELOPER. What does that mean? Land Development Community Development Road Development Infrastructure Development Re-Development Child and Personal Development (Education) Business Development Software Development Cultural Development Musical Motif Thematic Development (I.E. Beethoven Symphonies) Economic Development: Relies on and embodies all of these. DEVELOPMENT: Take resources that already exist, add, improve, build, preserve, create, and innovate new stuff/ideas/resources to create new opportunity or make something better, more beautiful, more productive, more comfortable, or more useful.

1: People instinctively hunger for and connect deeply with undeveloped nature. They go to great effort and expense to travel to and be part of nature s beauty by camping, hiking, traveling, going to parks. They even spend huge sums of money to re-create natural spaces around their homes, neighborhoods, and communities. 2: However, they cannot survive nature s untamed harshness for very long. Therefore, they are driven by the equally powerful instinct to tame or DEVELOP some natural spaces into human friendly spaces. Building homes, farms, roads, landscapes, markets, theaters, and gathering places to improve quality of life has been at the center of the human experience for all of civilized history. How close together can we bring these two human instincts?

Economic Development Has Always Been Essential: Find and Use Resources

Generations of Economic Opportunity From the Land 1948

Beyond a need to just survive People seek beauty and enjoyment. San Tan Regional Park People want to go to enjoy and play in natural beauty. It is a fundamental human need embedded in our DNA.

Does tension exist between development costs and open space preservation? YES! Can balance and success come from working through that tension? YES!

Pragmatism & Survival (1887 vs. 2014?) Profit Driven Development Making Someplace Safe & Comfortable to Live Community & Economic Development Are One & the Same Preserving & Enjoying the Natural Beauty. Combined Effort. Tension & Competing Needs Create Opportunity for BALANCE
