Speakers: in the Auditorium 9:30- Frank Hyman- The Liberated Gardener Gardens should never be boring, and neither should garden programs! Mr. Hyman is entertaining, inspiring, and knowledgeable. Would you like to spend less time weeding, bagging leaves, turning compost, and watering your garden? Do you want to spend less money on garden maintenance? Would you rather spend more time enjoying your garden than feeling enslaved by it? Mr. Hyman will teach us how to accomplish all of that while saving your back, and the planet, too! Learn how to create compost that never needs turning and smart ways to hook up rain barrels that also function as water gardens. Mr. Hyman has been creating beautiful and sustainable gardens since 1992 as the owner of Cottage Garden Landscaping in Durham, NC. He studied horticulture and design at NC State University under the late JC Raulston. He has created gardens that are drought proof, deer resistant, low maintenance, organic, and just plain pretty. He is also a professional stone mason, carpenter, metal worker, and sculptor. He speaks and teaches classes in NC and around the U.S., and he contributes to newspapers and magazines including Horticulture, Urban Farm, and Fine Gardening. His upcoming book, tentatively titled The Liberated Gardener, will teach gardeners how to save time, money, their backs, and our planet.
2:00- Jay Sifford- Magic in the Garden Your garden can be functional, beautiful, and slightly magical, putting life into perspective while inspiring your imagination, says Mr. Sifford. He believes that, in good garden design, you have to show the eye where to look and where not to look, and tell the brain what to process and what to ignore. Good design out-thinks the garden visitor. That's the magic of it all. He has three criteria by which he judges his work: Is it no longer a yard? Has it become a garden? and Does the garden make you happy? Landscape Designer and writer, Mr. Sifford works primarily in the Charlotte metro area, and enjoys designing unique woodland, Asian, and contemporary gardens. He is skilled at employing foliage of contrasting shapes, textures, and colors to weave together a special place that brings forth positive emotions in those who spend time there. Artistry, magic and integrity are his goals as he approaches each project. He was awarded the 2016 Best of Houzz Award, Charlotte, for landscape design. His gardens have been featured in Fine Gardening magazine, and he designed a Pacific Northwest garden for the 2017 Southern Spring Show in Charlotte. He also contributes to Houzz magazine, among others.
