CO 2 REFRIGERATION MACHINES AND HIGH TEMPERATURE HEAT PUMPS www.durr-thermea.com
KEY TECHNOLOGY FOR HEATING AND COOLING A once-in-a-generation decision has been made: the major industrialised nations want to decarbonise the supply of heating and cooling energy within the next 20 years. Renewable energy technologies, such as wind and water power or photovoltaic systems, are predominantly used to generate electricity. What s more, the energy transition will require energy efficiency, as well as conversion and storage technologies. The heat pumps, a proven technology that has been around for many decades, can efficiently convert electrical energy into heat, and at the same time provide cooling without exhaust gases, particulate emissions and any noteworthy loss of heat. Heat pumps increase energy efficiency and facilitate optimal utilisation of the energy available. If the electrical operating power comes from renewable sources, then a energy supply completely free from the emission of CO 2 (decarbonisation) is already a possibility today. The range of applications of heat pumps for heating and cooling is large: The most well-known of these is the use of geothermal heat for heating buildings. Tumble dryers and refrigerators also work on the principle of the heat pump. All of them have one feature in common: they heat on one side while simultaneously cooling on the other. Depending on which side we are using, we describe the principle as a heat pump or a refrigeration machine. The new temperature range of the thermeco 2 refrigeration machines and high-temperature heat pumps, as well as the use of carbon dioxide as a future-proof refrigrant, open up whole new areas of application in industry, commerce and building services for this fascinating key technology. It is therefore not just a once-in-a-generation decision about whether we use multiple proven technologies or continue to burn fossil fuels. It is also a decision in favour of a sustainable reduction in energy costs and a secure energy supply that does not depend on finite resources. 2

Heat pump thermeco 2 -HHR 360 MADE IN GERMANY QUALITY MADE IN GERMANY QUALITY The thermeco 2 -HHR series high-temperature heat pumps and refrigeration machines are developed, designed and manufactured in Germany. The machines have an EU type examination certificate issued by TÜV SÜD as well as the CE mark. Manufacturing takes place in accordance with ISO 9001:2008. Quality control tests within the factory, such as pressure strength tests, leakage tests and electrical tests are certified. Functional safety and dependability take top priority. Only products of German and European brand manufacturers are used in thermeco 2 heat pumps and refrigeration machines. The system is easy to operate, thanks to the large display of the thermeco 2 control system and intuitive menu navigation. Supervisory control systems at the customers facility can be connected via a bus interface. Proven technology is used in the semi-hermetic reciprocating type compressors and heat exchangers. Frequency inverters refine the power control. Oil separators and oil collectors have been specifically developed for CO 2 applications. 4

INVESTING SAFELY IN THE INVESTING SAFELY IN THE FUTURE FUTURE The F-Gas Regulation (EU) 517/2014 has governed the broad withdrawal from the use of coolants with a high greenhouse effect for the European market since 2015. Heat pumps and chilling units containing the still commonly used coolant R134a, as well as the mixtures R404A, R410A and R407A, are affected by this The regulation works by gradually limiting the quantities that can be traded. As early as 2018, only 63% of the F-gases will still be available on the market. In 2021, the annually approved quantity for trade purposes will be reduced to 45%. The reduction target of 21% will be reached in 2030. A sharp increase in the price of the aforementioned coolants is to be expected. Above all, however, the availability of the coolants on the market will become the central question regarding the safe operation of heat pumps and chilling units. Heat pumps and refrigeration machines, which are frequently used for 20 years or more and generally contain large quantities of refrigerant can become a risk factor for investment and production. Using carbon dioxide, a natural refrigerant, gives operators of heat pumps and refrigeration machines the possibility to make future proof investments, to meet long-term legal requirements and to run energy-efficient systems. CO 2 as a refrigerant offers you investment security. 2030 2024 Time is running out for F-gases R410A R507 R404 A R507 An alternative are natural refrigerants like CO 2 (R744) R404 A R404 A R410A R507 Today R404 A R410A R507 6
