Illustration of the Engine Block Heater Installed on the Vehicle 1. Allow the engine and all cooling system components to cool down. 2. Place a clean drain pan under the radiator drain plug, then remove the drain plug from the bottom of the radiator to drain the coolant. Remove the radiator cap to increase the flow. NOTICE: Radiator coolant will damage the body paint. Quickly rinse any spilled coolant from body paint finish. DRAIN PLUG RADIATOR CAP ENGINE BLOCK 892201AG INSTALLATION NOTE: Always use all Honda All Season Antifreeze/Coolant Type 2. Using a non-honda coolant can result in corrosin, causing the cooling system to malfunction or fail. To avoid burning out the element, do not operate the engine block heater before it is installed on the vehicle and before you add the coolant. 4. Remove the front bumper: Remove the eight clips and the four self-tapping screws. With the help of an assistant, pull the bumper forward to carefully release the 16 clips (eight on each side). Unplug the two connectors and remove the bumper. Place the front bumper on a blanket to prevent damage. 5. 6. Locate and remove the engine block drain bolt and washer. Coolant remaining in the engine jacket will flow out of the bolt hole when the bolt is removed. NOTE: Retain the bolt in case the block heater is removed. (A new washer should be used when the bolt is reinstalled.) 7. Install the new aluminum washer and the engine block heater into the bolt using a 24 mm socket and a torque wrench. Torque the engine block heater to 60 N. m (44 lb-ft). ENGINE BLOCK 60 N m (44 lbf ft) Use a 24 mm socket. ALUMINUM WASHER 872606AE 8. Bolt the engine block heater bracket to the engine block using the 6 x 12 mm flange bolt. 9. Measure and mark the heater harness at the point shown. Install a wire tie with clip on the heater harness at each of the measurements shown. 11. 13. Secure the heater harness to the modulator bracket with one wire tie with clip (point C). 15. Secure the heater harness to the vehicle frame with one wire tie with clip (point D). 17. Secure the heater harness to the vehicle harness with three additional black wire ties. 19. Secure the heater harness to the vehicle bracket with one black wire tie. BLACK WIRE TIE BLACK WIRE TIE BRACKET 873005AE 873007BE 18. Route the heater harness under the frame, and secure it with one wire tie with clip (point E). 20. Using a pushpin, pierce the air guide at the measurement shown. 8 mm 8 mm MARK AIR GUIDE FRAME PUSHPIN AIR GUIDE WIRE TIE WITH CLIP (Point E) 873006BE 3 mm 7 mm DRILL BIT 873008BE 21. While wearing an eye protection, drill the pierced mark to 7 mm. First drill with a 3 mm drill bit, and finish with a 7 mm drill. 2009 American Honda Motor Co., Inc. All Rights Reserved. 22. Install the heater harness to the hole made in step 21 with one black wire tie (point F). BLACK WIRE TIE (Point F) 27. Reinstall all removed parts. 28. Reinstall the radiator drain plug. 29. Fill the system with the recommended coolant. Follow the instructions described in the service manual to fill and bleed the cooling system. 30. Check the coolant reservoir for correct level, and check the cooling system for signs of leakage. Repair as necessary. 31. Check that the heater harness is routed properly and all connectors are plugged in. 32. Put the drain bolt (removed in step 6) in the glove box. BLACK WIRE TIE AIR GUIDE 873009BE 23. Attach the heater harness to the vehicle harness with one additional black wire tie. 24. With the help of an assistant, reinstall the front bumper. BLACK WIRE TIE CONNECTOR PROTECTIVE CAP BUMPER GRILLE 873011BE 25. Secure the protective cap to the front bumper grille, and plug the heater harness connector into the protective cap. 26.
