Casa Llotja de Mar Halls with History, Events with Future

Casa Llotja de Mar

Welcome to Casa Llotja de Mar Casa Llotja de Mar, located on the sea front in the historical centre of Barcelona, is one of the most significant and splendid monuments representing the economy and culture of the city. It was built in the second-half of the 14 th century, the most brilliant period of Catalan Gothic. The present neoclassical building was constructed in the 18 th century on top of the old medieval building. The antagonism of styles makes Casa Llotja a historical and artistic monument of immense architectural interest, to which is added the incalculable artistic value of its halls and rooms, decorated and enriched mainly with 18 th - and 19 th -century sculptures and paintings by students and professors of the Academy of Fine Arts. Its wide variety of rooms makes it the perfect place for hosting all manner of different business events with excellence and singularity as the main references: presentations, lunches and gala dinners, conferences, advertising campaigns, fashion shows, concerts, receptions, press conferences, etc. Discover the rooms in this unique building for holding your unique business event

Contracts Hall El Saló de Contractacions és la peça arquitectònica més destacada de l edifici, ja que es conserva des del període mediaeva

A majestic formal space with charm, comfort, distinction and elegance The Contracts Hall is the most distinguished architectural piece of Casa Llotja de Mar, and has been conserved since the medieval period. It is a large hall of 14m-high ceilings, with four columns and six arches that sustain the wooden beams of the upper floor. The scallop shells on the arches alternate with the shields of the king and the city of Barcelona, as it was King Peter III and the Consell de Cent government institution who promoted the building s construction. This hall has been witness to the first opera held in Barcelona, the Jocs Florals historically related poetry contests and other cultural events.

Courtyard and Staircase of Honour

The calling card for your event: surprising, accessible and singular The neoclassical courtyard of Casa Llotja boasts a square ground plan and three openings onto each wing. In the corners are four vaulted niches with sculptures that represent the four continents. The courtyard fountain contains the figure of Neptune, in acknowledgement of the building s maritime dimension. The courtyard is surrounded by a portico gallery and is dominated by the Staircase of Honour. The Staircase of Honour, the work of the architect Joan Soler Faneca, is an imperial flight of stairs flanked by two sculptures representing commerce and industry. At the first landing it forks into two symmetrical sets of stairs that lead to the corridor parallel to the facade, above the courtyard.

Golden Room

An elegant and exclusive space for a unique occasion The walls of the Golden Room in Casa Llotja are covered with Damascus silk tapestries featuring the shield and motto of the Barcelona Chamber of Commerce. Particularly of note are the golden frames and pediments of the doors, the sculptures, furniture and the cut-glass teardrop chandeliers. In the four corners of the hall, resting on cylindrical pedestals, are four white marble sculptures by Damià Campeny (1771-1855). The sculptures represent the figures of Conjugal Loyalty and the Nuptials, in reference to marriage; Diana the Huntress, the symbol of fertility; and Paris offering the apple of Beauty.

Consulate Room

A little jewel in a select space The Consulate Room is found on the first floor of Casa Llotja de Mar. On the ceiling is a mural work by Pere Pau i Montaña, painted in 1802 to mark Charles IV s visit to the Llotja, an allegory of royal power. The walls are clad in red damask upholstery. Beneath the canopy of the pediment is the portrait of Antoni de Capmany i de Montpalau (1742-1812), the work of Modest Teixidor i Torres.

Lucrècia Room

A welcoming art space steeped in history Also on the first floor of Casa Llotja de Mar, the Lucrècia Room (named for having contained the masterpiece by Damià Campeny) stands out as a welcoming space surrounded by paintings. On the ceiling one can see the work of Bonaventura Planella Conxello representing the Board of Commerce and the commercial relationship between Barcelona and the Americas. On the facade, a portrait of Spain s King Alfonso XIII, the work of Joan Brull, commemorates the monarch s visit to Casa Llotja de Mar. Flanking this painting are two marble urns by Campeny, one dedicated to Bacchus and the other to Hercules. On the side walls of the hall are portraits of the various presidents of the Barcelona Chamber of Commerce.

Plenary Room

Tradition and cutting-edge technology at the service of your company This room, located in the former Montcada Chapel, was renovated in the year 2001. It boasts the most modern equipment for holding meetings, conferences, debates and press conferences.

Consul s Room

The austere elegance of a hall brimming with talent This hall was the site of the Academy of Fine Arts, an institution responsible for providing public education in Barcelona. Its roll-call of famous graduates includes Antonio Gaudí and Pablo Picasso. The Barcelona Chamber of Commerce undertook a remodelling of this space in 1973. It was then when, while demolishing the intermediate-level forging work, the restorers found the intact arches of the Consul s Room.

The antechamber to the Consul s Room A good part of the 16 th -century arches were taken to the second floor and form the antechamber to the Consul s Room. The antechamber is known as the Lions Room for the two large plaster cats sculpted by Damià Campeny.

A singular building in an incomparable setting A further attraction of Casa Llotja is its exceptional location: in front of the sea, a few metres from the Port of Barcelona and the old heart of the city, with many places and monuments of interest, including the Cathedral, Les Rambles and the church of Santa Maria del Mar, among others.
