Safety aspects The control unit, the control panel, and the fan unit use a dangerously high voltage of 230V. The system should be made dead before any electrical or maintenance work. Electric installations should only be carried out by a suitably qualified electrician. Before any maintenance work is carried out on the fan unit, the safety switches for the fan and for the hatch opening motors should be turned to position 0. If the fan unit is installed in a place where it may cause danger, access to the unit should be prevented. The installer and the operator are jointly responsible for ensuring that the installation complies with all local rules and regulations. If the pressure side is not ducted, the product shall be provided with a safety mesh, e.g. BDKU. Fläkt Woods FIFLO E 2009.11 3

System overview 1c 1a,1b or 1c 1b 2b/2c 4 SMPA-1 2a 1a Fan unit 2a, 2b or 2c 3 SMPZ-2 The SMOKE MASTER SMPA is an all-inclusive total solution for exit route pressurisation. The system has been designed and the components constructed to meet the E 12101-6 requirements. The system has been subjected to a variety of tests at Fläkt Woods own laboratories. SMPA has been designed for pressurisation of exit routes of different types, such as the stairwells of residential buildings, underground exit routes, and the exit routes from car parks. The SMPA-1 fan unit is available with three sizes which makes it suitable for use over a wide range of air volumes. Control unit 3 PRESSURISATIO PRESSURIS. STADBY SERVICE FA O MA Due to its compact structure, the SMPA fan unit (SMPA-1) has small overall dimensions and, therefore, it is also suitable for a variety of renovation projects. In blocks of flats, the fan unit can be installed in the upper or lower part of the stairwell. SMPZ-3 Control panel An SMPA total solution comprises a smoke hatch integrated into the encapsulated fan unit, a control panel, and a control unit. The apartment air release solutions with spindle motors, smoke detectors, and control units are supplied by our partners. 4 The distance between the fan unit SMPA-1 and the control unit SMPZ-2 should be less than 15 m. SMIZ-4 Differential pressure transmitter Fläkt Woods FIFLO E 2009.11 4

Installation Installation of the fan unit Lifting SMPA at the installation site The unit is provided with three lifting lugs that should be used when lifting the unit with, for instance, lifting straps. If you remove the lifting lugs of the unit after installation, the lug fixing screws should be screwed back in when the lugs have been removed. Fläkt Woods FIFLO E 2009.11 5

Electric installations Stairwell smoke detectors If the fire indication system of the building is used for alarm indication, no smoke detectors directly connected to the SMPA system are needed. The smoke detectors (FDRC-1-SMIA) allow direct connection to the SMPA system. There should be stairwell smoke detectors ceiling mounted at each landing, or according to a separate plan. The detectors (max. 32 units) should be connected in series, with a terminator connected to the last one (see wiring diagrams). The smoke detectors are supplied with plastic dust covers that should not be removed until the construction work is completed. Alternatively, the transmitters can be installed just before taking the system into use. The smoke detectors are optical and rated at 24 V. When a smoke detector detects smoke, the red LED on the detector is lit, and an alarm indication is provided to the control unit. The alarm remains active until reset at the relay unit included in the control unit. If no stairwell smoke detectors are installed, a 2.2 kohm terminator shall be connected to the control unit, in place of the indicator. Relay unit for smoke detectors The stairwell smoke detectors should be wired to the relay unit in the SMPA control unit. The relay unit monitors the operation of the smoke detectors. ormal operation: Green LED Operation illuminating. Service alarm: Yellow LED Service illuminating. Clean the smoke detector: the yellow LED should start flashing slowly. Reset the alarm using the Reset button: the yellow LED should go off. Error: Yellow LED Short circuit illuminating to indicate detector cable short circuit. Fix the problem: the yellow LED should start flashing slowly. Reset the alarm using the Reset button: the red LED should go off. Fläkt Woods FIFLO E 2009.11 7

Electric installations Differential pressure transmitter The differential pressure transmitter should be installed in a sheltered place. The silicone hoses should not exceed 10m in length and should be shielded or otherwise replaced with pipes. Take the + hose to the stairwell and the hose outdoors. The end of the outdoor hose should be protected against wind and rain, however, without disturbing pressure measurement. The outdoor hose can be taken through a wall using a wall sleeve designed for overpressure meters (YM-1 + capped pipe + bend), available as an accessory. The differential pressure transmitter is set at the factory to 100 Pa range. Make sure the dip switch settings are as shown in the picture. The display of the pressure transmitter must be accessible to those conducting annual inspections. The display should be reset once a year. Disconnect the hoses and open the cover. Press and hold the Zero button for five seconds. The factory setting for the response time is 2s to ease off pressure control. The setting can be checked by placing dip switch PJ3 to the F position. Fläkt Woods FIFLO E 2009.11 8

Electric installations Control unit The control unit should be installed not more than 15 metres away from the fan unit. It should be located in an easily accessible space to facilitate, for instance, the resetting of smoke detectors. Control panel The control panel should be placed in the stairwell near the entrance door where the rescue authorities can easily find it. PRESSURISATIO STADBY SERVICE PRESSURIS. FA O PRESSURISATIO STADBY SERVICE PRESSURIS. FA O MA MA Test operation: To access the switch, open the cover for test operation. Pressurisation can be switched on in the MA position. Standby: ormally, the PRESSURISATIO switch is in the AUT position and the green STADBY light illuminates. In the event of a fire, PRESSURISATIO starts automatically, and a fire fighter can brake the glass and switch pressurisation off, if necessary. Fläkt Woods FIFLO E 2009.11 9

Electric connections o fault current protector should be used in the power supply line, because the frequency converter may trip it. Connections to an external system, e.g. an apartment smoke extraction window or a fire indicator system Pressurisation can be switched on from an external system using potential free, normally open contacts. The contacts shall remain closed during pressurisation. The voltage in the circuit is 24 VAC. The control unit provides potential free run and alarm signals. The run signal is activated when pressurisation or smoke extraction is in operation. This signal can be used for activating the emergency stop function of building ventilation, for instance. A warning signal is given if the system has a fault that prevents its operation. System operation The components controlling SMPA are: the fuses and switches in the power supply cable for the control unit the fuses, frequency converter, relay unit and hatch opening switch inside the control unit the control panel the pressure transmitter the smoke detectors the safety switches for the fan unit external systems, if any. Pressurisation Starting When an SMPA smoke detector becomes activated, pressurisation starts if the control panel pressurisation switch is in the AUT position. A pressurisation start signal may also come to the SMPA control unit from an external system, in which case the pressurisation switch in the control panel must be in the AUT position. The pressurisation switch in the control panel is turned to the MA position. The hatch opens. In about 20 seconds, the fan starts running and blowing air into the building. The frequency converter in the control unit adjusts the fan speed according to the differential pressure value measured by the pressure transmitter and tries to maintain an overpressure of, for instance, 50 Pa in the stairwell. Stopping Pressurisation activated by an SMPA smoke detector shall be stopped by resetting the ABAV relay unit inside the SMPA control unit. There must not be any smoke around the smoke detector any more. Pressurisation activated by an external system shall be stopped from that system. Pressurisation activated from the control panel shall be stopped by turning the pressurisation switch to the AUT or 0 position. Fläkt Woods FIFLO E 2009.11 11

Frequency converter The frequency converter controls the pressure during pressurisation. The parameters of the frequency converter are set at the factory. A list of these parameters is attached to this document. Error code Read the displayed code and remove the cause of the problem. Resetting after an error To reset an error that has caused the fan to stop use the back-up fuse to cut off power to the frequency converter and wait until the display has gone blank. Then, switch on power again. To reset the error, press the Reset/OFF key and then the AUTO/O key. Control panel The frequency converter should always be in the AUTO/ O mode! Pressure controller adjustment The pressure controller (PI) has been preadjusted to respond fast but without oscillation. If the leakage air flow of the building is small and oscillation occurs, the controller can be adjusted less sensitive by decreasing gain (7-33) and extending the integral time (7-34). 7-33 Process PI Proportional Gain 0.00-10.00 * 0.01 7-34 Process PI Integral Time 0.10-9999 s * 9999 s Fläkt Woods FIFLO E 2009.11 12

Tests and inspections Initial inspection 1. First measures Turn the control unit fuses to position 1. Turn the safety switches to position 1. Turn the control panel switch to position 0. Switch on power to the control unit. Reset the pressure transmitter to read 0 Pa. The differential pressure transmitter must be switched on approx. 15 minutes before resetting. Check that only the green Operation LED on the relay unit is on. Check that the frequency converter is in the Auto/On mode and does not display any error messages. The yellow Service LED on the control panel should now be on. Turn the PRESSURISATIO switch on the control panel to the AUT position. The green STADBY light should now come on. 2. Checking the operation of the hatch To open the hatch, turn switch S3 inside the control unit to position 1. If the hatch does not open, the reason may be that the safety switch is in position 0 or the linear motor is incorrectly connected. To close the hatch, return the switch to position 0. 3. Checking the operation of pressurisation Close all stairwell doors. Start pressurisation by turning the PRESSURISATIO switch on the control panel to position MA. Alternatively, with the PRESSURISATIO switch in position AUT, pressurisation can be activated from an external system or by triggering a smoke detector using test gas. The red PRESSURISATIO light on the control panel should come on. The fan unit hatch opens. In approximately 20 seconds, the fan will start running and air will start flowing into the stairwell. If the flow of air is in the wrong direction, interchange the connection of two phase conductors to the fan motor. The frequency converter in the control unit adjusts the fan speed according to the differential pressure value measured by the pressure transmitter and tries to maintain an overpressure of, for instance, 50 (±5) Pa in the stairwell. If the pressure will not rise, check the transmitter hoses and make sure all doors are properly closed. If the pressure oscillates too much, adjust the pressure controller according to the instructions. The intended air release path has to be kept open during testing to reduce vibrating. With the PRESSURISATIO switch in position AUT, reset the relay unit in the control unit by pressing the RESET button. The fan stops and the hatch closes. Semi-annual inspections Use the control panel switches to check the operation of the unit by letting it run approx. 10 minutes (see Initial inspection). Annual inspections Carry out the measures described under Initial inspection. Check that the hatch of the fan unit opens without trouble. Remove any obstructions. On the hatch opening motors, the following should be checked. o Security of motor mountings o Protection against moisture o Operation (testing) and electrical connections of the motors Also check that the hinges of the hatch are properly secured, and that the seals are tight. Check the condition of the transmitter hoses. Replace hoses as necessary. For resetting the pressure transmitter the hoses need to be detached from the transmitter. See installation of pressure transmitter. Fläkt Woods FIFLO E 2009.11 13

Tests and inspections Maintenance of electric components Maintenance of the automatic system: Reset the pressure transmitter once a year. Clean smoke detectors when an error message has occurred. Replace fuses in the control unit as necessary. Annually inspect the frequency controller fan, and replace as necessary. Check control panel glass once a year. Check and replace control panel LEDs as necessary. Operations for fan maintenance The fan bearings must be replaced every ten years. Before starting maintenance work, at the power supply cabinet switch off the power supply to the fan and make sure that it cannot be accidentally switched on. Also turn the safety switches to position 0. First, expose the impeller end of the fan (safety switches), remove the safety mesh (if applicable) and the impeller. Then, undo the screws visible at the end of the electric motor, and withdraw the motor end cover together with the rotor. Replace the bearings on the rotor shaft and assemble the parts in reversed disassembly order. Fläkt Woods FIFLO E 2009.11 14
