GOOD TO KNOW OUR FABRICS HAVE BEEN TESTED At IKEA we test the fabric covers on our sofas and armchairs so you can be sure they re durable. The fabric s ability to resist abrasion is tested by using a machine to rub it against another fabric while applying firm pressure. A fabric that can take 15,000 cycles is suitable for furniture that must withstand everyday life at home and if it can take more than 30,000 cycles, it is very resistant to abrasion. All fabrics are sensitive to sunlight, which is why we also check that our fabrics resist fading effectively. Durable in different ways Tough tests are an important way to check the durability of our fabric covers, but they don t tell the whole story. Durability also depends on materials, construction and manner of use: Heavy, tightly woven fabrics with a flat surface are most resistant to abrasion. Fabrics with a mixture of natural and synthetic fibres can withstand abrasion better than fabrics with only natural fibres. Yarn-dyed fabrics are more durable than fabrics with printed patterns. And a dirty cover wears out faster than a clean one. The fabric is also affected by how you use your sofa of course. Machine washable at 60 C 20.000 5 CARING FOR YOUR FABRIC SOFA-BED At IKEA we have many different covers, so chances are good you ll find one that s just right for you. The majority of our fabric covers are removable and washable, which makes them very practical. If you should happen to spill something on them, it s not a catastrophe all you have to do is remove the cover and wash it. You can even buy a new cover to revamp your sofa-bed or match a newly renovated room. One idea is to have several covers that you can switch between one for every season! Take care of your sofa-bed With a little care you can keep your fabric sofa-bed looking good for longer. Vacuum it regularly, since dust and dirt break down the fibres and impair the quality of the fabric. Feather cushions should not be vacuum cleaned the feathers can slip through the cover. Beat them instead. A tip is to move the cushions every once in a while, so your favourite seat doesn t become more worn than the other seats. Try to protect your sofa-bed from exposure to direct sunlight. It s a good idea to close curtains or blinds during the hours when the sunlight is strongest. Easy to wash Our removable covers can either be machine-washed or drycleaned. You should always wash the entire cover, so there is no risk of colour shifts between different areas. How the fabric should be washed depends on the material, how it is woven, the texture and the shape of the cover. For this reason, it is essential to follow the washing instructions on the label. Close the zipper on the cover when you wash it it reduces stress to the inner seams and zipper. Don t put the cover in the dryer it may shrink. Hang it up to dry instead. It s better to iron the reverse side of the fabric and to do it while the fabric is still a bit damp. That makes it easier to get creases out and easier to put the cover back on the sofa-bed. Removing stains If you should get a stain on your cover, it s important to remove it immediately. Sometimes ordinary water will be all you need. If you re not sure what caused the stain, it s best to take the cover to be professionally dry-cleaned. Otherwise, you risk washing in the stain rather than washing it out. If you use a stain remover, it is advisable to first test it on an area of fabric that is not usually visible. The stain should be lifted and not rubbed away. The majority of our fabric covers are removable and washable. Protect your sofa-bed from direct sunlight with blinds or curtains when the sun is strongest. If you should get a stain on your cover, remove it immediately. 4
