John Hope Bryant Founder of Operation Hope January Section Event OPC & Integration: Eliminating Islands of Information OPC and its various standards enable the simple integration of information across disparate platforms. It also shifts the responsibility for designing a communication interface from an integrator or large DCS manufacturer to each component system designer. Like printer drivers, each component designer is responsible for building a standard communication interface that any other software can rely on to communicate with the device. This allows any OPC enabled device to speak to any other. This discussion will introduce the audience to the big picture of OPC and show the basic architecture. It will also show how a project might be structured to connect multiple OPC enabled devices as well as the challenges that may occur as well. We will also highlight the advantages of sharing information via OPC for process control as well as higher level reporting such as enterprise historians, ERP and MRP systems. About the Speaker. The event was a success again this year despite some rough seas. Looking back at 2009, those that attended the Automation OC show October 27 probably enjoyed plenty of well-made German food for free, and visited some of the 60+ exhibitors at the show. For our first show, I think it was a huge success. As always, we had much to learn and next year will be all that much better. I would also like to thank the ISAOC Board members (especially Bis Mitra), John Prince and Kandace Peterson for all their work and time, the day of the event was a big team effort. November s presentation by Romel Bhullar and Mark Murphy, both highly respected engineers from Fluor, on the topic of Designing Safer Plants, was well attended and informative. Thank you to both for donating their time to educate the OC members. The Christmas Cruise as mentioned above has replaced the December meeting. Lastly, we will be adding a new addition to the beginning of each presentation. As a result of the economy, we will be offering a brief one-minute slot to any individual, seeking a job, to speak to the group and express their qualifications and type of job they are seeking. Employers looking for employees will also be given a one-minute slot to advertise their available positions. We hope this adds to the value of the meetings and encourage all to take advantage of the opportunity. Don t forget you also have the opportunity to advertise your availability in the Chart newsletter for free as well. ISA Society News ISA Unveils Plans for ISA Automation Week 2010 Research Triangle Park, NC (Oct 23, 2009) The International Society of Automation recently unveiled plans for its new event, ISA Automation Week: Technology and Solutions Event, to be held 4-7 October 2010 at the Westin Galleria Complex in Houston, Texas, USA. ISA Automation Week will feature intensive educational and applications-based technical conference sessions delivered by subject matter experts. Discrete and process automation professionals will have a chance to learn techniques and solutions for creating more efficient, productive, and economical manufacturing processes. ISA training courses and standards meetings will also be held concurrently, making ISA Automation Week a one-stop shop for automation and control knowledge and networking opportunities. ISA Automation Week is organized around a different model than ISA has used in the past. The new model focuses on the conference as the center of the event, because we believe that automation and control professionals at every level seek knowledge above all else. By centering the event on the conference, we can help exhibitors create more successful interactions with serious and focused attendees at all levels, said ISA Executive Director and CEO Patrick Gouhin. ISA is all about knowledge. The conference focus of this event will help us deliver a top-notch technical curriculum to our ISA Society news, continue on page 7 Romel Bhullar accepting the Corporate Sponsorship and Support Recognition Award for Fluor Corporation, Aliso Viejo, California, from ISA President Gerald W. Honors and Awards ISA Orange County Section recognized ISA Orange County Section has received the Section Performance Award for enabling two student groups to compete in a robotics competition student groups. The Section Performance Award carries a $500 honorarium and plaque. Presentation was made to Section President Sebastian Zielonka during the Society s annual Honors and Awards Program. ISA believes the strength of the Society lies in our Sections, and knows how hard Section volunteers work to provide the best possible programs and services for their members. To recognize these efforts, ISA has established a set of Section Performance Awards, based on a scoring system designed to recognize several areas of Section activities. The Section Performance Award was originated to recognize and reward high quality performance at the Section level. Section activity, for some members, is their total perspective and experience of ISA. All Section Presidents are invited to nominate themselves to receive a Section Performance Award based on a particular accomplishment, like Member Retention/Recruitment; Newsletter; Training/Education Program; Student Section Support; Web site, etc. To do this, the Section sends a letter explaining what was accomplished along with documentation for the activity to the Honors and Awards Committee. Each submittal will be considered on its own merit and not by guidelines prescribed by the Subcommittee (potential for 3 awards). Nomination deadline is 1 June. Detailed information about all the honorees can be found at http://tinyurl.com/isa-honorees-09. More information about the Section Performance Award at http://tinyurl.com/sectionaward. ISA Society news, Continued from page5 attendees, and it will benefit our partners and exhibitors as well, said ISA Automation Week Program Committee co-chair and 2009 ISA President Jerry Cockrell of Indiana State University. By drawing on our connections to the academic community to develop presentations in addition to our strong applications-based technical network, we can create a well-rounded program that attracts all levels of automation professionals. The increased focus on the conference aspect of the event is a positive development for automation suppliers as well, said 2010 ISA President Nelson Ninin, who is the President of Yokogawa America Do Sul SA. We believe that an educated prospect is a qualified prospect. Our attendees will spend three intensive days learning about the latest technologies and solutions in the world of automation and control, and they ll be ready to see the products that our partner companies have to offer in those areas. This is a great opportunity for a company to showcase its products as solutions to the technical challenges and developments presented in the conference sessions. An Exhibitor Advisory Committee and other feedback mechanisms are being created to solicit input at various stages of the development process for the 2010 event and events in future years. Companies or individuals interested in learning more, or providing input toward the development of ISA Automation Week, should contact ISA at feedback@isa.org, or call +1 (919) 549-8411. New InTech Editor, continued from page 7 manager for a multimillion-dollar controls and automation product line and president of an industrial control software company. It is indeed fortunate that we have been able to have somebody as well qualified as Bill Lydon, said Vitor Finkel, ISA Publications Department vice president. Here is somebody who has dirtied his hands, so to speak, with real instruments. Not only that, but he also has experience in designing automation software. He is one of those rare people with practical experience and the ability to write-the ideal person to be at the helm of the leading automation publication. InTech, says Lydon, is the conduit for ISA Members to share their rich and valuable sources of knowledge to improve controls and automation effectiveness. Trained as a group problem-solving facilitator at the Creative Education Foundation, University at Buffalo, Buffalo, NY, Lydon now facilitates groups to help them solve problems and identify opportunities. I hold those people who work in controls and automation in the highest esteem, comments Lydon, and I believe their honorable professions are key to industry, society, and the environment. In addition to serving as chief editor of InTech, Lydon also will continue his independent editorial work with other companies, such as Automation.com. This arrangement further strengthens ISA s newly announced partnership with Automation.com to jointly publish several e-newsletters for InTech and Automation.com subscribers.
