Nortons The Street Smarden Kent TN27 8NB
Seller Insight Nortons is an elegant Edwardian home that enjoys a superb location within the delightful village of Smarden. Forty-five years ago I left London for a new job in Ashford and rented a lovely little property in this charming village, says the owner. I had been living in the house for around a year when a local estate agent suggested that I take a look a Nortons. I really enjoyed living in Smarden and I ve always liked Edwardian properties, so I knew almost immediately that this house would make a lovely home. Back then the house was split into two flats and therefore needed a fair amount of renovation work, but I could see that it had great potential to be transformed back into a very attractive and spacious home. The work took some time, but it was done in a very sympathetic manner and all of the lovely Edwardian features were retained, so it s traditional in style and the layout is much as it would have been when the house was built. It s spacious, light and bright throughout, but I d say that there is still great potential for it to be enhanced further. One of my favourite rooms would probably be the breakfast room, says the owner. It s an all purpose room where I eat, relax, and it has a really lovely view of the garden. The front bedroom is a lovely big space with a huge bay window, says the owner, however as I don t have the need for a fourth bedroom I currently use it as a study-cum-library. It s a very tranquil space where I can work, immerse myself in a good book or simply sit and watch the world go by. A lovely feature of the property is the garden, continues the owner. It s mainly to the side of the house and I ve developed it into a traditional flower garden. It s a very attractive space that incorporates various beds of pretty plants as well as a good size lawn, but it s very mature so easy to maintain. To the back of the house I also have an organic vegetable garden, which I ve been tending for over forty years, so it s nicely established and always produces a really good crop of vegetables and soft fruit. I ve always been very involved in village life and it s the community aspect of Smarden that I ve enjoyed the most, particularly since retiring, says the owner, however when I was working it was also a very convenient location. I could hop in the car and be in Ashford in next to no time or catch the train from Headcorn if I needed to get into London. I like to get out and about and from here it s relatively easy to get just about anywhere. It s time for a new chapter in my life, but I shall be sad to leave this house, says the owner. I ll miss the house itself, my lovely garden and the wonderful community spirit of the village. It s been a super home. * These comments are the personal views of the current owner and are included as an insight into life at the property.
