CIEE Global Institute Berlin Course name: Future Cities Design Studio Course number: ARCH 3001 GGAD Program offering course: Global Architecture and Design Language of instruction: English U.S. semester credits: 6 Contact hours: 90 Term: Fall 2017 Course Description For the first time in history, the majority of human population now lives in cities, a milestone that coincides with the awareness that earth s systems are increasingly influenced by human activity. This studio supposes extreme solutions to an extreme predicament, asking the question: How will future cities simultaneously serve demanding human populations and support natural systems? The studio views the forms, systems, and technologies of the city collectively and synthesizes urban studies with the field of ecology. Project sites are selected based on significance in dynamic ongoing development in Berlin. Students receive training in software for digital design, environmental analysis, as well as rapid prototyping. Students in this course will have access to the Global Fab Lab for 3D printing and CNC milling. The course is taught vertically meaning that students are assessed individually per their level of experience. Learning Objectives By the end of the course, students will be able to: critically communicate ideas about cities and environment. begin to understand the practice of architecture and design within an emerging global context. conduct urban investigations and present their findings coherently in verbal and graphic formats. respond to site characteristics in a meaningful way. critically communicate architectural and urban design ideas. learn from relevant urban precedents. develop a comprehensive project, in other words, be able to tell a complete story using a range of media. have a rudimentary understanding of the phenomenon of building at all scales, from detail to city. work productively in a group. Students should begin to understand the relationship of architecture and design to allied disciplines; they should be able to work in interdisciplinary teams. Course Prerequisites To participate in the Global Architecture and Design program, students must be majoring in Architecture, Environmental Design, Industrial Design, Interior Design, Landscape Architecture, Sustainability Studies, Urban Design or minoring in these areas--and have completed 2-3 semesters of design studio or a project-based course in their major. 1

Methods of Instruction Class presentations and discussions, readings, and site visits. The studio has a vertical and highly individualized structure to teach students with varied experience. This also means that students must be prepared to exhibit more selfmotivation and discipline. Design exercises are gradually applied to the project. The studio operates in tangent with the concepts introduced in the Future Cities Seminar and the skills learned in the Science and Technology Workshop. A range of tools may be deployed including computational and/or parametric modeling, performance simulation, physical experimentation, and rapid prototyping equipment, e.g. 3D printing, vacuum forming, CNC or laser cutting. Assessment and Final Grade Participation/Communication/Process 25% Mid Review Presentation 25% Final Presentation 25% Final Documentation (Book) 25% Course Requirements Participation/Communication/Process As a studio course, students should be ready to engage in group activities as well as manage their time appropriately for individual design work. Mid Review Presentation (1) Research - Local typology and site analysis: exploded axonometric drawings including morphology, context, circulation, and environment analysis - Supporting thematic research (2) Concept Proposal - Program and parti diagram(s) - Circulation and Sun Shading diagrams and/or video(s) - Physical model massing and form-finding studies, scale 1:500 - Drawings in plan and section, scale 1:500 - Perspective (model photo or digital render) Final Presentation/Documentation (Book) The Final is presented in presentation as well as more detailed book documentation, for print and web publishing. This is coordinated with Global SE Students. Boards may be required depending on the presentation venue. Remember to include drawings from the mid review as appropriate. Class Attendance Regular class attendance is required throughout the program. Students must notify their instructor via Canvas, beforehand, if possible, if they will miss class for any reason. Students are responsible for any materials covered in class in their absence. Students who miss class for medical reasons must inform the instructor and the Academic Director (or a designated staff member) and provide appropriate documentation as noted below. A make-up opportunity will be provided to the extent this is feasible. Due to the intensive nature of the block schedule, all unexcused absences will result in a lower final grade for the course. Each unexcused absence will cause 3 percentage points to be dropped from the final grade. For example, a student with an 88% final grade (B+) and 1 unexcused absence will see it reduced to 85% (B). Students who transfer from one class to another during the add/drop period will not be considered absent from the first session(s) of their new class, provided they were marked present for the first session(s) of their original class. Otherwise, the absence(s) from the original class carry over to the new class and count against the grade in that class. Excessively tardy (over 15 minutes late) students will be marked absent. Students who miss class for personal travel will be marked as absent and unexcused. No make-up opportunity will be provided. An absence will only be considered excused if: A doctor s note is provided. A CIEE staff member verifies that the student was too ill to attend class. Evidence is provided of a family emergency. Attendance policies also apply to any required co-curricular class excursion or event. Persistent absenteeism (students approaching 20% or more of total course hours missed, or violations of the attendance policies in more than one class) may lead to a written warning from the Academic Director or Resident Director, notification to the student s home school, and/or dismissal from the program in addition to reduction in class grade(s). Project Introduction: [BIO]Urban - Research Pavillion NOTE: The project is subject to change based on ongoing issues and concerns in the city of Berlin. Alejandro Aravena, curator for the 2016 Venice Biennale, described sustainability as the rigorous use of common sense. The meaning is not that issues of sustainability are obvious, but rather, that after having accepted, understood, and applied the paradigm, unlearning the patterns that contributed to the current crisis and rethinking new ones, sustainable practices and perhaps even technologies are evident. [BIO]Urban (Bio is the German term for organically produced products) explores the role of nature in contemporary society and city-making. The project asks students to rethink the urban commons with an infill project for vertical farming and distribution. Like a farmer s market, the installation should be a dynamic gathering space, but also featuring strong environmental response and current and future technologies for vertical farming. The studio employs the process of bio-inspiration (learning from nature) in tangent with computational design and digital fabrication technologies (especially morphogenetic design). The former Berlin East Plattenbau or prefabricated social housing feature wide, largely empty common spaces between buildings. These spaces are underutilized resources in a rapidly expanding city. Designers are encouraged to develop scalable and replicable solutions that could potentially be installed in related sites. 3

Weekly Schedule NOTE: this schedule is subject to change at the discretion of the instructor to take advantage of current experiential learning opportunities. The project brief and site will be selected on a semester to semester basis. Session 1 Academic Orientation / Q & A Session 2-6 Background Research: Site Analysis and Concept Development Students receive an introduction to the project, site, and an overview of development history in Berlin including pre-war, reconstruction and division, and reunification. Architectural masterworks will be visited and discussed, such as the Reichstag Dome by Foster and Partner, Potsdamer Platz by Renzo Piano Workshop, and the Jewish Museum by Daniel Libeskind. Further attention will then be paid to the state of the art in sustainable urban development illustrated by in-class presentations and site visits. Students will visit the Berlin City Planning Offices and current sustainable development initiatives. The project site investigations focus on local context including typology and morphology studies, local culture study, and environmental analysis. Students will be provided a range of tools analysis and graphic representation. Supporting background research concerns the evolution of thought an practice in the area of sustainable design innovation, urban ecology, and biologicallyinspired design. Students conduct form-finding studies based on the principles of bio-inspiration. The design is developed iteratively, beginning with massing studies in response to program, local context, and especially environmental influence. Students receive training in digital modeling with Rhino 3D and Grasshopper. For the midreview the concept is presented with corresponding drawings and models. Students receive training in digital fabrication. Digital models are prepared for 3D-Printing and/or Milling. Session 12-18 Design Development Following the mid-review project goals are refined and a strategy is developed for the completion of the project. It is very important that students learn how research can effectively inform decisions and projects, how to develop a project plan, manage expectations, and stay on schedule. The project is developed further with a focus on finalizing design drawings in plan, section, and elevation. Students continue working towards preparing models for final digital fabrication. Training is provided on generating drawings and diagrams from Rhino and Grasshopper. Session 19-24 Design Development and Communication Project drawings are developed for further consideration of construction and technical schematics, and utilization of digital fabrication technology is used to realize the project. Communication of the project and especially the narrative is developed in class. Training is provided in project rendering and graphic communication. Finally, projects are compiled in the PDF book for digital publishing. Presentations are given to an audience of reviewers and peers in a public exhibition. 5
