Dynamic Escape Routing System D.E.R.-System Sicherheitstechnik GmbH
D.E.R.-System New routes to safety Vision and resulting products Since the start of our company we work to bring ideas and visions regarding personal safety into products giving best performance and customer value. Starting with stationary emergency lighting, simplified installation concepts with JOKER technology and bus-systems we now have a new escape route concept with intelligent dynamic escape routing. Are escape routes always escape routes? Stationary safety- and exit luminaries with legends indicating a defined direction are used to reflect existing legal requirements and standards. They are installed along the escape route, above doors, on ceilings and walls. The signs fulfil the duty to lead people safe and fast out of the building to a safe place in case of power failure or during a necessary building evacuation. Competence, experience and flexibility along with an ongoing customer / user dialogue lead to new results for known problems. In 2004 senior fire protection and safety experts awarded INOTECs D.E.R.- System with the "German Brandschutzpreis" for the most innovative concept in the category "Systemand Detailsolutions" But, what happens when even low concentrations of smoke affect the visibility of the exit signs? Several guidelines, i.e. the German health and safety regulation BGR 216 of January 2001 recommend the use of a low mounted dynamic emergency guidance system. The new EN 50172 comments that the use of a safety guidance system enhances the effectiveness of the emergency direction finding. A fire usually creates a strong development of smoke in the first phase resulting in rapid spreading smoke rising to the ceiling and reaching areas so far not directly harmed by fire. This creates a dangerous and life threatening condition to people there. The toxic content in the smoke requires a rapid evacuation of the area. Forthcoming orientation problems, resulting panic worsen the situation. Accidents in the near past, some with fatalities, have shown this dramatically. How can we improve the scenario and bring people out of the endangered area? Our solution is the Dynamic Escape Routing System, D.E.R.-System.
D.E.R.-System please follow us Dynamic - Why? Fire alarm panels with smoke and heat detectors identify quickly the source of danger. Connected to an intelligent system the resulting best escape routes can be found. As a fire or smoke is never static the system dealing with the necessary safety and escape routes must be dynamic as well. The display of the new escape direction has to be located on the best visible place usually on the floor or in low level on the wall. People will find the escape route even in cases where smoke is hiding the standard pictogram panels on the ceiling. All together safe! The Dynamic Escape Routing System (D.E.R. System) of INOTEC is a concept developed with the help of customers and authorities to increase the personal safety. The change of a direction must be clearly understandable and unmistakable for the person concerned. The luminaries used for the dynamic direction routing are connected to a central controller which in turn has links to the fire alarm panel. This controller incorporates the complete escape route possibilities and activates, depending on the location of hazard, the connected luminaries. The safest route is activated and triggers the resulting direction on the luminaries. The luminaries are able to display up to 4 directions. We achieve this with a LED - matrix installed in each luminaire. To indicate a direction we use green LEDs arranged in an arrow shape. The blocking of a direction is done activating red LEDs. If one follows the activated green LED arrow direction, the end of the escape route or the place where the exit door is located will be highlighted by a green Xenon flashlight.
The different D.E.R.-components allow the realisation of a flexible escape routing system in line with the specific building requirements. People present in an area endangered by smoke or fire can safely leave the building through the safe and open escape routes. D.E.R.-System Application sample
D.E.R.-System with cinema, restaurant and car-park D.E.R.-System in use The installation of D.E.R. luminaries is helpful to improve orientation in a lot of applications. FS 1000 series LED-luminaries used as guide lights or spot lights in underground car parks or rooms darkened during use, such as cinemas/theatres, help to guide people every day.

D.E.R.-System City airport Dortmund Vision and final solution The City Airport Dortmund uses standard emergency lighting and the D.E.R.-system to optimise safety. It proofs that function and design do not contradict each other. The new terminal at the Dortmund Airport uses the D.E.R concept The D.E.R.-system was considered to be an essential part of the safety concept at very early stages of the project. This allowed a well thought combination of conventional emergency lighting as per DIN VDE 0108 and the dynamic escape routing system especially for areas with high public density. The FL 3000 WE incorporates two functions The bi-directional green LED arrow indicates the best possible escape route direction in case of fire; the safety luminaire helps to improve the visibility on the escape route when smoke is present.
D.E.R.-System Example The tragedy at Duesseldorf Airport triggered a complete new fire protection and emergency concept. The multi-million ERO investment ensures that similar accidents will never happen again and that personal protection is higher than ever. Our D.E.R.-system is an essential part of this concept. New materials, reducing the amount of toxic and/or aggressive components in the smoke during fire, a dense network of smoke-, heat- and fire sensors, advanced ventilation and air conditioning units, conventional emergency lighting and our dynamic escape routing system have been tested under real conditions. The use of a system guiding people along the nearest escape route has been found imperative in smoke filled areas. Final tests, prior to the official opening, proofed the safe and effective methods created to evacuate the building. TH - Aachen / Technical niversity Aachen The benefical impact of the dynamic escape routing system has been favoured by the TH-Aachen. Static conventional exit signs above the doors are combined with dynamic D.E.R.-luminaires activated by the fire alarm system.
D.E.R.-System Example Architecture and design to help people New concepts and solutions have been implemented in the Hospital "St. Louis" in Ettelbrück, Luxembourgh. Interior design, ergonomy and the safety of patients and staff are in focus. New standards are set with the implementation of new products. The static emergency lighting based on central battery systems has been complemented with the D.E.R.-system. Form and function led to excellent results. An accident shortly after the opening of the hospital gave proof of its effectiveness and reliability. Motorway tunnel Markusberg and Mondorf, Luxembourgh Leaving a tunnel in case of a fire has become a more important design consideration after some accidents happened during the last years. Next to the detailed fire detection and smoke ventilation a simple, fast and correct definition of the safe exit direction is required. These in 2004 realised tunnels use the D.E.R.-System for this purpose.
