THE FUTURE OF BONSAI IS IN THE HANDS OF OUR CHILDREN 9 year old neighbor Will arrived recently and said Chase, I want to learn bonsai.today!!!! Max, 12 years old, and his mother Emily enjoyed taking a class and learning together! from Chase Advise and tips In my 50 plus years in bonsai these past months have been the most difficult for the health and well being of our trees. The warmth in February and freezing and changing temperatures in spring affected trees tremendously. We have trees that are still in the recovery stage. This global warming is a serious matter and I find myself moving my conifers more towards filtered sun. Now that real summer is starting, don t trust light or short rain. Instead remember during this summer to use abundant water, maybe even water twice some days.. If you cannot check trees constantly place all small ones on a tray with pebbles and keep moist at all times. I do not water during the heat of the day and if I must water due to bonsai being dry I only water the soil. I prefer to water early morning or late afternoon or evening. Our tropical trees needing leaf reduction are all being defoliated before mid July so they will have good leaf coverage by October. Never seem to do enough fertilizing. Some of our students do it weekly using 4 or 5 different fertilizers and I have to say they are getting a lot of good growth. We use liquid fish twice a month as a foliage and soil drench. Our homemade fertilizer balls have been placed on all Bonsai and are changed about every 6 weeks. Tropical Bonsai repotting is in full steam using a well draining soil mix which has 20% akadama. This helps retain moisture in the soil during the winter months while in the house. Have a good summer. If you have any questions about your Bonsai feel free to call.
