FEATURES OF THE MD10 The CLARKE MD10 is a portable, hand held metal detector intended to be used for security inspection in airports, schools, courthouses, prisons, stadiums and entertainment places. It can detect concealed weapons such as knives or other metal objects in baggage, postal parcels or under clothing. Features include: 3.5mm headphone socket Normal/Low Sensitivity Audio tone changes as the metal size changes Audio alert/led alert Operation status constantly monitored upon completion of self tests Low-battery Indicator Auto scanning 3

PREPARATION FITTING THE BATTERY 1. Release the battery cover retaining screw before lifting the cover and pulling it backwards. 2. Install one 9V alkaline battery type PP3 or equivalent, connecting it to the battery clip. 3. Replace the cover and tighten the screw. FUNCTIONS OF THE DETECTOR 1. POWER SWITCH This is a rocker switch which has three positions: ON/OFF/SENSITIVITY 2. AUDIO ALERT When the detection area passes a metal object, the speaker emits an audible alert. When a headphone with a 3.5mm jack is connected to the socket, the audible alert can be heard through the headphones. 3. VISUAL ALERT When the detector locates a metal object, the red ALERT LEDs on the front and back of the unit illuminate. This function also operates when the headphones are in use. 4. AUDIO TONE DISCRIMINATION When a small metal object is detected there are changes in only the audio volume, but when the object is larger, there will be changes in both volume and pitch. 5. RESET BUTTON The reset button can be pressed lightly to recover normal operation if the sensing behaviour of the device becomes eratic. 6. HEADPHONES The Headphones can be used when working in any noisy environment or at any time when silent operation is required. 7. LOW BATTERY INDICATION If the detector keeps bleeping without the green READY light flashing it is an indication that the voltage in the battery is low and it should be replaced. 4

8. ADJUSTING THE SENSITIVITY Insert the tip of a small screwdriver though the Sensitivity Adjustment apperture. Slowly rotate the SENS control clockwise to increase (or counterclockwise to decrease) the sensitivity until both audio and visual alarms signal continuously, before easing off slightly. Position a suitable target in front of the detector and adjust until the target is reliably detected. N.B. Setting the sensitivity too high will produce a false signal. OPERATION SWITCHING ON 1. Set the switch to the ON position. The unit will self-test and after 1-2 seconds, the green READY LED on the front and back panels will blink and the red ALERT LED will extinguish. This indicates the metal detector is ready to use. 2. When the detection area of the unit is swept past a metal object, the speaker emits an audio alert and the red ALERT lights will come on. For large metal objects, the audio tone will become higher than for small objects. PERSONNEL SCANNING PROCEDURE 1. First, scan the front of the body, passing the detector from the right shoulder, down to the ankles and then back up to the left shoulder as shown in the diagram. 2. Then scan the back of the body, starting behind the head and following the outline of the body, passing down the line of the spine as shown in the diagram. 3. Finally, to search the feet and ankles, keep the detector vertical and approx 1-2 inches above the floor. It may be necessary to use the Low Sensitivity button while searching close to the floor. 5

MAINTENANCE CLEANING & GENERAL MAINTENANCE The metal detector should be kept clean and dry, but may be wiped with a damp cloth to maintain its appearance. Avoid using chemical cleaners. Remove the battery from its compartment if the metal detector is not going to be used for a long time. SPARE PARTS LIST The only spare part required for the MD10 unit is a single 9V alkaline battery, type PP3 or equivalent.
