Member of the NIBE Group Selfregulating Heating Cable 1. Tinned copper wire. 2. Selfregulating synthetic heating element. 3. Outer XPE-insulation 4. Tinned copper braiding / alu-foil. 5. Outer synthetic jacket TPE-O. The ELSR heating cable can be used for frost protection and maintaining constant temperatures for receptacles, pipes, valves and gutters etc. Except for the connections, the heating cable may be immersed in fluids. If used in an aggressive environment (the Chemicals or Petrochemicals industry), we lag the heating cable with a special chemically resistant outer jacket (flouropolymer), option BOT. Function: Selfregulating heating cables consist of two parallel bus wires embedded in a networked plastic heating element, doped with surroounding carbon particles. If the temperature increases during operation, the plastic expands due to molecular expansion and the distances between the carbon particles increases. Resistance increases and output drops. When it cools down, this process is reversed and output increases. This physical property not to exceed the specified temperatures also facilitates the cross-routing of self-regulating cables and managing without a temperature cut-out device. Advantages: Self-regulating with adaptable output Various temperature range applications Demand-orientated output grading High chemical resistance No temperature limitation required Can be cut to length from the roll EEx-approval SAN selfregulating heating cable can be installed in hazardous areas, when the cable a.o. is equipped with special termination kit. Optional outer jacket. Tinned copper braid Selfregulating heating tape Type GTe up to 85 C Thermoplastic elastomer insulation Semi-conductive self-limiting matrix. 1.1mm² Copper bus wires Roof and gutter protection from snow and ice build up Automatically adjusts heat output in response to changes in ambient temperature Can be cut-to-length with no wastage Will not overheat or burnout, even when overlapped Full range of accessories available Optional fluoropolymer outer jacket for use in corrosive environments Available for 110-120VAC and 220-277 VAC Description: Snow that has built up on a roof will start to melt as a result of either exposure to the sun or from heat rising from the building below. As the melted snow runs from the roof into cold gutters and drain pipes, it can re-freeze forming layers of ice that can continue to build up until the flow is blocked. This can result in damaged drains and gutters. In addition, water can get into the roof and walls of the building, leading to expensive structural damage such as broken roof tiles, damaged plaster and facades, etc. The Solution We have the solution in the form of G-Trace. The self-regulating characteristics of the heating tape means that the cable can adjust it s heat output in accordance with the ambient temperature. In snow and icy water, the heating cable operates at full power. As the snow melts and the water drains away, GTrace self-regulates to half power while it dries. As it gets warmer, so G-Trace gradually reduces it s output. The G-Trace system is safe and reliable. As self-regulation prevents overheating, G-Trace can even be installed in plastic gutters and with the UV resistant outer jacket, the heating cable is protected from the sun s harmful rays thus making it totally durable and reliable. G-Trace provides a cost effective, preventive maintenance solution to damaged roof tops and gutters and the system consumes no more power than it takes to prevent ice formation. Design and installation of a G-Trace system is simple as there are no fixed lengths. The heating tape can be cut to length during installation. G-Trace is cut off the reel and placed in the gutter. The heating tape is hung down into the down pipe without the need for spacers. All systems - from the simplest to the most elaborate use the same components, thereby providing maximum flexibility and ease of design. Optional corrosion resisting outer jacket. (-S) or (-F) Metal braid (-C) Selfregulating heating tape Type FS+ up to 225 C* Or continuous metal jacket (-A) Silicone rubber electrical insulation Inherently temperature safe selfregulating matrix Bus wires A high temperature self-regulating heating cable. 225 C exposure temperature withstand, (energised or switched off). Inherently temperature-safe. (ITS) Power outputs to 60W/m at 10 C External temperature controls not necessary Description: FS+ is a high temperature self-regulating heating cable, having an exposure limit of 225ºC, energised or not. It may be provided with a continuous extruded metal jacket for applications where high mechanical strength is required or a metal braid where flexibility is preferred. The continuous metal outer jacket is ductile, yet withstands high mechanical loads, thus averting damage when being installed in arduous environments. Easy terminations, cut-to-length. Safest ever self-regulating product range for high temperature exposure; will not overheat even when exposed to 225ºC when energised or switched off as it is inherently temperature-safe. ATEX/IECEx Approved. Inherently Temperature-Safe: The inherent ability to self-regulate at a temperature level below the maximum product rating and withstand temperature of the insulating materials, without the need for temperature control. Similar competitor self-regulating products are typically limited to a maximum energised temperature, typically 120ºC at which point, their retained power output prevent the cable from self-regulating at its own limiting temperatures. All such products require temperature control to ensure their own temperature safety. Maximum continuous exposure temp. Ex Temperature Limiter Ex Temperature Monitor Type BTB/BSTW Features: 16A switching capacity Pre-set limit point for BSTB Suitable for use in zone 1 areas Temperature setting directly in zone 1 areas Resettable lockout on the device Direct heating circuit connection via sheathed cable/cold lead Temperature ranges from -20 C to +500 C Description: The 16A Ex temperature monitor BSTW / temperature limiter BTB are switch-over controllers housed in an EExe certified polyester enclosure. Heaters, fans, motors and other equipment are energised and de-energised by means of this thermostat when specific temperature ranges are exceeded. These devices can also be used to control the temperature in air, liquids or on various surfaces. Function: Any change in temperature at the sensor bulb causes a change in the volume of fluid in the measuring system, which in turn results in a movement of the diaphragm membrane. This membrane is connected to a mechanical device that activates a microswitch. If the temperature at the sensor bulb exceeds the pre-set value, terminals 1 and 4 are opened. The BTB devices lock-out permanently if the set temperature is exceeded. After a temperature decrease of about 9% below the set value, BTB can be re-set manually. If there is a rupture or break in the sensor tube (leakage), then the switch remains permanently open (fail-safe). If the temperature falls below the minimum setting, the autocontrol opens the circuit but closes again on temperature rise. Protection class... Member of the NIBE Group Control and Monitoring Type ELHC/2, ELHC/4 Heating circuit monitoring device ELHC/ is used to monitor self-regulating heating cables. Due to the capacitive load of the terminal equipment there is a phase displacement between the heating current and the supply voltage which is measured by the monitoring unit. The operating status is indicated by a potential-free change-over contact. In addition, the failure of the heating circuit voltage and supply voltage is detected. In case of a diconnection of the heating cable the phase displacement disappears releasing a fault message via the potential-free change-over contact. Simultaneously, the fault is indicated by a red LED (if the operating voltage is available). ELHC/4 is used to monitor resistance heating lines. It monitors the resistance of a single and double phase heating circuit, respectively, with regard to disconnection in the switched-on/ off mode. Moreover, a failure of the heating circuit and control voltages is detected. A potential-free change-over contact indicates the operating status. Advantages: Economic Direct connection to heating cable Applications: Industrial applications Mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) The heating circuit monitor ELHC/2 for monitoring self-regulating heating cables features a monitoring relay ELHC/2.1 and the terminal unit ELHC/2.2. Since the unit is linked to the supply voltage of the heating cable, the heating cable can only be monitored during operation. The heating being switched off, the contact is in the fault status. The heating circuit monitor ELHC/4 is used to monitor resistance heating cables. Type Designation Part no. Member of the NIBE Group Applications for Heating Cables Ground Heating - Calc. 60-90W/m² For green houses, hot houses, lawns and other ground, where nature in the early spring or in the late autumn needs help through extra supply of heat. The heating cable is placed in a sand layer (thickness approx. 50mm) in 200-300mm depth and in loops with a cc-distance of 200-250 mm. It should be equipped with protection against digging, i.e. tile, cable protection, wire mesh or similar. Avoid placing the cable in peat soil and similar materials with low heat conductive capacity. Thermostat with sensor in the ground must be used (placed in pipes, which have been tightened at the end). The plant must be equipped with fault current relay and marked with weather proof tag plates. Snow Melting - Calc. 200-350W/m² It is often neccessary to keep paths, steps, ramps, halls, car parks etc. free of snow and ice. The need for power and mounting varies according to the technical construction of the plant. The heating cable is placed in a sand layer, stone free asphalt or direcly in concrete approx. 50mm below level, which can be asphalt, concrete flags or similar. On steps the outer cable should be placed as near to the outer edge as possible to avoid icing on the edge. Calculate three cable strands per step. Adjustment equipment for snow melting is available in various types. You can control the plant by only one thermostat with field and air thermostat or with special snow sensors. Please contact us for suggestion for the correct equipment. The plant must be equipped with fault current relay and marked with weather proof tag plates. Down Pipes and Gutters - Calc. 30-40W/m² Standard gutters and down pipes (120mm) are kept free of ice by putting the cable into the down pipe. For wider gutters the cable is placed in loops with 75mm cc-distance. The heating cable is mounted by using a distance holder to have it placed best. The heating cable is fastened in the down pipes by using a gutter hook. The icing problem occurs at +5 C to -8 C. It is therefore appropriate to control the plant with a min/max thermostat or a combined humidity/temperature control. Ask us for advice. The plant must be equipped with a fault current relay and marked with weather proof tag plates. Frost Protection of Platforms - Calc. 20-25W/m² Damage to platforms caused by frost in the below ground at winter building activities, can easily be avoided by putting the heating cable directly in the stone free sand layer under the platform and insulate with broken stone in a 150-800mm depth. It is important that the heating cable is directly in touch with permanent installation or insulation. Therefore cover the heating cable with at least 100mm of sand. Minor plants can with the low total electricity consumption be running continously during the work. At bigger plants an automatic cabinet is recommended. Fault current relay demanded. At bigger areas several heating cables are combined. 67

Mounting Instructions for Heating Cables Prior to the mounting non-tailor made heating cables must be tailor-made. For this the termination kit is used. For better heat transmission at plastic pipes or cast-iron pipes, alu-foil, alu-tape or similar are used before the tracing. Start the laying at the feeding point of the heating cable. Please note requirement for extra length for connection at terminal box or thermostat. Fixing of the heating cable is made by a fixing material to match. Mounting of heating cable on pipes. Laying along the pipe. If the heating cable is laid along the pipe, it must follow the underside of the pipe and be fixed at each 300mm. Spiral laying. If the heating cable is spirally wound around the pipe, this has to be made with regular distance over the entire pipe length to obtain even heat distribution. Mounting of heating cable on flanges. Before and after flanges the heating cable must be wound spirally closer. Please note! rough edges must be deburred or covered by an aluminium plate. Mounting of heating cable on T-junctions. Normally each arm on a big T-junction is wound by a separate heating cable. At shorter T-junctions a single cable is normally laid along one of the sides of the T and returns along the other side to the main pipe line. Mounting with valves. Extra length heating cables for valves. To enable the service of the valve the heating cable must be wound across the valve. Place the heating cable so that the valve can be removed without damaging. This is made by placing the heating cable on the pipe on both sides of the valve, and then letting adequate extra cable hang for the valve. The extra length is fixed in a Z at the bottom of the valve. Mounting on big valve flanges. If the valve has a relatively big flange, extra heating cable must be wound once around the edge of the flange. Mounting on small valves. If the above mounting is not possible, extra heating cable is placed on each side of the pipe next to the valve or the flange. For further information, please see the mounting manual, delivered with the cable. 68
