Master Transportation Plan

Master Transportation Plan (MTP) Adopted in eight parts Goals & Policies element and MTP Map adopted in 2007 Bicycle, Pedestrian and Demand and Systems Management elements - adopted in 2008 Transit and Parking and Curb Space Management elements - adopted in 2009 Streets element adopted in 2011 4

Significance of MTP Part of Arlington County s Comprehensive Plan. Similar to the General Land Use Plan (GLUP) and Public Spaces Master Plan Provides policy guidance for development of other plans and projects Periodic reviews and amendments to the MTP undergo a public review process including hearings at commissions and County Board 5

Current Vehicle Traffic Major Streets: S Four Mile Run Drive: 15,000 Vehicles Per Day (VDOT 2015) Shirlington Road: 7,700 Vehicles Per Day (VDOT 2015) 6

Trail Usage Bicycles Pedestrians Total Daily Average W&OD Trail 34,572 21,195 55,767 1,800 Four Mile Run Trail 41,440 10,395 51,835 1,700 (August 2015) 7

Planned Future Capital Projects Walter Reed Drive - Complete Streets Project from Four Mile Run to Arlington Mill Drive, currently in design. Shirlington Road Bridge reconstruction proposed for design in 2016-2017. Walter Reed Drive Complete Streets Project from Glebe Rd. to S. Pollard St. (likely to begin design in 2018 or 2019). 8

Application of MTP Policies County policies call for: planning integration of land uses and transportation, developing Complete Streets, and managing travel demand Typical applications: upgrading streets with enhanced sidewalks, new street lighting, bicycle lanes, better bus stops, traffic signals and safety features. New streets or alleys may required with redevelopment of large properties. Traffic demand reduction and/or traffic speed calming Community and project team will seek to identify the transportation desires and deficiencies for the 4MRV area. Implementation of proposed improvements would likely occur as part of property redevelopment (private funding) and through County-initiated projects (funded in the CIP). 9
