A Look Back at our 70 Years 1947 2017
In North Carolina you can still find people that will say, Around these parts before they tell you something profound about the topic you have inquired on. It s a way of saying that there is wisdom here which has survived the ages which is beyond a single person is more than opinion and is as solid and as real as the ground under your feet. Around these parts, people say that Century Furniture does business the right way. Actions make a reputation and a reputation over time over a long time creates a legacy. Harley Shuford started Century Furniture in 1947 to build fine furniture by employing and working with the finest craftspeople in the area. In order to attract and retain the finest, he worked hard at taking care of the people that chose to work with him. The people were the company and doing the right thing by his people created, over time, a reputation as a great place to work. Harley used to stand in the factory at the start of every Christmas holiday and shake the hand of each employee as they left telling them thank you. Thank you for being here with me, thank you for making me proud, thank you for holding Century s reputation for doing things the right way in high regard. Over the years the manner in which we conduct our business has become known as The Century Way. Beyond the furniture we craft and the rooms we help decorate, the Company is this maxim: We will always try to do business in a way that makes our predecessor s proud. We will be honest and sincere, holding onto a care for our community as bedrock. We will be thoughtful, intentional and tireless in our work to create furniture that delights and endures. We will be local and personal and never take for granted that we exist and succeed because of individuals both clients and associates. The Century Way is to work hard with heart. The ultimate compliment you can give a member of our company is to say, Harley would be proud. Alex Shuford III, Grandson of Harley Shuford CEO
