Congratulations on receiving your compact Little Dipper Compact Paraffin Bath. The Little Dipper Compact Paraffin Bath is designed for light duty but is long lasting when so utilized. The unit is fabricated from 304 stainless steel. Paraffin Baths are precise instruments designed to safely facilitate hot paraffin treatments of the body extremities so as to relieve the pain and discomfort associated with joint diseases and/or injuries. Published discourses on the benefits of such treatments are available from Whitehall. Unit rating is 120V,.67A, 50/60Hz. Lid Tank Indicator Light 3

The instructions below are indicated by specific symbols. An understanding of these symbols, their companion text and the specific instructions and captions must be understood prior to operation of the equipment and patient treatment. CAUTION- Ignoring the following could cause injury or equipment damage. CAUTION The table or cart must be level for proper and safe use.! WARNING- These are safety infractions that could result in serious injury. DANGER- These are possible safety infractions if this equipment is used where flammable anesthetics are present. All internal parts capable of transmitting electric current are grounded. Therefore, the electrical outlet to which the unit is attached must be properly grounded. Grounding reliability can only be achieved when the equipment is connected to an equivalent receptacle marked "Hospital Only" or "Hospital Grade". If there is any question as to the electrical protection, a qualified electrician should be consulted. Little Dipper Paraffin Baths are intended for use only where the person utilizing the treatment is under the supervision of trained personnel. DO NOT operate the unit dry - always make sure to fill with water before plugging in unit. If the heating element is empty, the heating element will burn out. Treatment temperature must be monitored closely and, of course, a patient's medical history must be reviewed, as with any heat modality, for heat sensitivity and circulatory problems. Always disconnect the line cord plug from the receptacle before working on any unit. Do not use bleach or iodine based products to clean the tank as such products can quickly corrode the stainless steel tank resulting in pin holes and leaking water. Do not touch cord or plug if you are wet, standing in water or on a wet surface. Constant supervision is necessary when the unit is used with children, invalids, or any one who cannot safely operate the unit.!! WARNING Do not use the unit outdoors. Little Dipper units should not be used for electrical susceptible patients without a physician s approval. The definition of such a patient is a patient being treated with an externally electrically conductive device indwelling or implanted and terminating on or near the heart. Refer service and electrical problems to qualified personnel and/or Whitehall Manufacturing only. Do not use if the unit, cord, or plug has been damaged. Return unit to Whitehall Manufacturing or a qualified service center. Do not use an electrical extension cord. Plug unit directly into a properly grounded receptacle. If there is any question on the grounding of the receptacle, call an electrician. Replace fuse as marked. 2A/250VAC fast acting glass tube type. DANGER Do not operate any paraffin bath where flammable anesthetics are present. 4

BASIC SET UP AND USE INSTRUCTIONS Plug the bath into any convenient outlet of 115 volt 50/60 cycle alternating current. Where a proper outlet is not available, an adapter plug should be used and correctly grounded. Place the paraffin (2 lbs.) in the bath. The unit will be on once plugged in. It is recommended the Little Dipper be connected to electric current day and night. It will then be ready for use at any time. To attempt to melt the paraffin every day to bring it to an operating temperature will consume valuable time. The cost of continuous operation of the bath will approximate the cost of continuously burning a 40 watt bulb. If it is necessary to disconnect the bath from the electrical circuit at night, the paraffin solution will solidify. By turning on in the morning for about 3 hours the proper temperature will again be achieved. DIRECTIONS FOR TREATMENT The appendage to be treated should first be thoroughly washed and dried. The appendage should then be placed in the bath and quickly removed so a thin coating of paraffin congeals and adheres to the skin. This procedure should be repeated until a "glove" of paraffin is of sufficient thickness to allow the patient to keep the hand immersed in comfort. After this glove is formed, the hand should be constantly immersed in the bath for 10 to 20 minutes or longer. The glove of adhering paraffin should then be removed and massage and reeducation of the member instituted. The skin remains soft, pliable and moist when this treatment is used and a characteristic hyperemia results which is not obtainable in any other way. Continuous immersion is the recommended procedure for the fastest relief. For new patients, it is suggested the following times be considered: 10 minutes for fingers 10 to 15 minutes for hands Because of the high heat input of the paraffin, the bath must be used judiciously in treating old, weak or debilitated individuals. If circulatory and sensory changes are present, the application of paraffin should be made cautiously. For such patients, we suggest the glove be allowed to build up and the hand removed from the bath until the paraffin is cool. The member in the paraffin glove then should be again immersed for as long as possible. Also, when there is insufficient time to allow the hand to soak, a thick glove should be developed on the hand and the glove wrapped in "Saran Wrap" or an equivalent to obtain the longest possible benefit from the heat. Many operators of paraffin baths, in an effort to keep the bath as clean as possible, are discarding the paraffin gloves rather than returning them to the bath. This practice is made easy by the advent of Refill Kits, which economically provide packages of paraffin, which can be used to maintain the bath level. CLEANING AND STERILIZING Cleaning of the pan can best be accomplished with a very mild, non-scratching household cleaner and a very low abrasion plastic scouring pad lightly applied. On a stainless steel tank, never use a metal scouring pad as it is too abrasive and may leave carbon metal deposits on the stainless which will rust. Again, disinfection and sterilizing is different from facility to facility, and we have found that alcohol is still the best (but expensive) cleaning and sterilizing solution. Bleaches and/or iodine should not be used, but is they are- if they must bethat thorough rinsing of all metal parts be accomplished. Never should bleach or iodine be allowed to "soak" on the surface of stainless steel without the solution being immediately washed completely off. Continued use of such practices will result in pin holes in the stainless steel tank and leakage. 5

CHANGING THE FUSE Turn the Paraffin unit off by unplugging the unit. Next, position the unit to allow access to the rear of the paraffin bath. Locate the fuse holders at rear of the unit. Depress the fuse holder caps with the use of a "common" blade screwdriver or fingers and rotate counterclockwise approximately 90 or until the cap becomes loose. Remove the fuse holder cap, exposing the glass fuse. Remove the blown fuse. Once the old fuse has been removed, replace it with a new fuse of the same kind and amperage. Reinstall the fuse holder cap by depressing and rotating clockwise approximately 90 and ensure that the fuse holder caps are secured. Turn the unit on via plugging it in to an electrical outlet. Allow the wax to warm up to the operating temperature and use as required. PARAFFIN REFILLS Whitehall Manufacturing can provide refill paraffin wax (Paraffin Oil sold separately and can be purchased through your therapy products dealer). If the factory paraffin is not used and the paraffin is purchased elsewhere, it is most important this paraffin be at melting point in the range of 126 F (52.2 C) to 132 F (55.6 C). If this is not done, the Bath will not operate at a high enough temperature to keep the paraffin liquid or, if adjusted to overcome this, will be too hot for use by all except the strongest patients. Make sure to add paraffin when the level in your tank drops below a depth of 4" (101.6mm). Using unit without sufficient paraffin in the tank can cause major temperature fluctuations. REPAIR OF UNIT It may be necessary or you desire to return the Little Dipper unit for service. In that case, we would appreciate you contacting Whitehall Manufacturing directly. We will make arrangements for the unit to be returned to our production location. When the unit is received by us, an estimate of repairs will be made and you will be contacted. Please- we would appreciate warranty repair or any other repair be arranged directly with Whitehall Manufacturing. If you are not satisfied with our service, then and only then, contact your dealer. Your Little Dipper Paraffin Bath has been manufactured with extreme care, throughly tested and is warranted against all defects in workmanship and is warranted against all defects in workmanship or material for a period of 1 year from date of shipment from the factory. This warranty is not effective against conditions resulting from accidents, abuse, alterations or misuse. 6
