Gas Ranges Overview 5 Gas is the preferred cooking fuel because it is hotter and retains less heat than electric (non-induction) cooking. Ranges are very different from the last time you bought a range. They are more powerful with many more possible features. In this guide, you will learn the different sizes, configurations, and features. Photo credit: Pinney Designs, Rikki Snider, Weidmann Remodeling via Houzz

What s New 7 Front Control Ranges We will talk about freestanding and slide-in range options, but there is now a third possibility. The front control range combines the easy installation of a freestanding range with the slide-ins backguard free aesthetic. We will discuss all three options in this guide. What s New 8 Wi-Fi Enabled Ranges Samsung has their first Wi-Fi cooktop. The temperature can be monitored remotely on your phone through an app. Look for improvements in GE and LG because they will be introducing new products as well. Photo credit: Samsung
W h a t s N e w Finish Options 9 Custom Colors La Cornue and BlueStar have a multitude of different color options. Ilve, ConuFe, and Veromna will have 9 different finishes as well. Black Stainless Steel Black Steel has become very popular. Its dark hue from stainless steel matches all cabinet styles. However, Black Steel is an oxide coating over stainless. It can scratch leaving the shinier stainless underneath. Watch our scratch test video before buying black stainless steel appliances. One manufacturer outperforms others. Range Terms 11 Sizes Standard ranges are available in 20, 24, 30 and 36. 30 inch is the most common size. Professional range sizes are 24, 30, 36, 48 and 60. Photo credit: Aidan Design via Houzz
Range Terms 12 BTU Output British Thermal Unit (although no one calls it such) measures the amount of heat for the surface burners. The average 10 years ago 10,000-12,000 BTU on high-end ranges. Now, you can buy ranges with up to 25,000 BTU. Photo credit: Robin Rigby Fisher CMKBD/CAPS via Houzz
Range Terms 13 Convection Fan-forced heat for more even temperature and cooking, especially for baking. Sometimes referred to as European convection, True Convection, refers to a third heating element behind the fan. It is more precise than regular convection. Range Terms 14 Bake Element Below the lower rack, heat radiates from this element in bake mode. It is a broiler with greater width allowing for more heat to be transferred. The bake element provides low output and more heat across the surface of foods. Photo credit: The Cross Interior Design via Houzz
Range Terms 15 Warming Zone A feature on high-end ranges, the warming zone provides for low heat to keep finished food warm. Photo credit: Executive Cabinetry via Houzz
Range Terms 16 Griddle Burner An elongated burner with the ability to be used as a burner or with a non-stick griddle over it. Photo credit: Tracey Stephens Interior Design via Houzz
Range Terms 17 Warming Drawer Instead of storage below the oven, the drawer has a lowtemperature element. The warming drawer is useful for keeping food warm for up to three hours. You can prepare food and leave it warm for your family later. Photo credit: It s Great To Be Home via Houzz
Range Terms 18 Second Oven Instead of a warming drawer, you have a second oven. There are two types of ranges with this feature. KitchenAid has a double oven with the smaller oven on top, while Frigidaire, GE and Electrolux have the smaller oven below. Look at both before buying. Photo credit: Rock Paper Hammer via Houzz
Range Terms 19 Dual Fuel Features a gas top for output and electric convection oven for the most even cooking. Be careful before buying as you need a separate 220V line to accommodate the electric oven. If you are looking for dual fuel, induction (magnetic heat) is a better option with a faster boiling time and lower simmer. Photo credit: ThinkMakeBuild via Houzz
20 TYPES OF RANGES We highlight the types of ranges currently available Photo credit: Wrightworks, LLC / Houzz
Types of Ranges 21 Freestanding A regular range owned by 90% of those buying American products with controls on the back. Freestanding ranges fit into a 30 wide space without built over the countertop. Installation is easy. Photo credit: Stewart Thomas Design Build via Houzz
Types of Ranges Freestanding Ranges Output 22 Brand Total BTU (30 ) Highest BTU (30 ) Bosch 53,000 18,000 Bosch Benchmark 55,000 20,000 Jenn-Air 41,200 19,000 Samsung 57,000 17,000 Frigidaire 45,500 17,000 KitchenAid 39,500 15,000 Whirlpool 42,700 16,000
Types of Ranges 23 Slide-In Slide-in ranges, unlike freestanding ranges, have no backguard for a cleaner look. You ll see your whole backsplash without any obstruction. Slide-ins also overlap your countertop, so spills won t enter seams like a freestanding range allows. Slide-in ranges tend to be more expensive, starting over $1,000, and more expensive than a freestanding range with the same features. Photo credit: Claudia Martin, ASID via Houzz
Types of Ranges Slide-In Ranges Output 24 Brand Total BTU (30 ) Highest BTU (30 ) Bosch 51,000 20,000 Jenn-Air 58,000 19,000 Samsung 57,000 18,000 Frigidaire 43,500 17,000 KitchenAid 47,000 15,000 Whirlpool 40,000 12,500
Types of Ranges 25 Front Controls Front control ranges can fit easily in a 30 space like a freestanding range and have the controls on the front like a slide-in. They will still have a seam between the range and the counter.
Types of Ranges Comparison 26 Freestanding is the least expensive with Front Control and Slide-In being almost twice the average price. Slide-Ins are better than Front Control for new construction because they eliminate countertop seams. Freestanding ranges should be considered in replacement situations. Freestanding Range Front Control Range Slide-In Range
Types of Ranges 27 Professional Professional ranges are quite simply a commercial looking range with higher BTU s. Pro ranges are available in 24, 30, 36 and 48 with the larger sizes available with grill, griddle and French top configurations. We have a separate buying guide dedicated to Pro style cooking products. Free Pro Cooking Buying Guide Photo credit: Garabedian Properties via Houzz
Types of Ranges Pro Range vs. Regular Range 28 VS Pro ranges have always had the higher BTU burners but that gap is narrowing considerably. Regular ranges, especially higher-end ranges, now have at least 1-2 equally hot burners at a much lower price. Photo credit: Live Oak Construction Group LLC, Streamline Design Ltd. via Houzz

Gas Cooktops Cooktops + Rangetops 35 Cooktops are quite simply the burners of the range. What should be a very easy product to purchase is twice as hard to understand because unlike ranges, cooktops are dominated by niche companies like Thermador, Viking and Wolf. VS. Every manufacturer markets a cooktop, but only the better brands seem to sell them. Cooktops are about output, reliability and ability to simmer. Rangetop Cooktop Photo Credit: Sub-Zero and Wolf

Packages also geometrically increase rebates as well. 39
