Outdoor One or more indoor or outdoor units Indoor 1 Domestic hot water 2 Heating 3 Cooling Daikin Altherma Flex Type Daikin Altherma Flex Type air-to-water heat pump is a world-first renewable heating system ideal for apartment schemes and collective housing, as well as light commercial heating applications such as schools, leisure environments and businesses. Daikin Altherma heat pump range Daikin Altherma Flex Type is the latest addition to the renowned Daikin Altherma range of air-water heat pumps, which was first launched in 2006 and is already a tried and trusted technology used successfully in over 100,000 European domestic installations. Daikin renewable heating for every requirement With an excellent range of domestic high and low temperature heat pumps, and solar thermal hot water systems for single homes, Daikin offers the most advanced range of solutions for new build applications, renovation projects and retrofit installations both in residential and now also commercial settings. Complete system from one manufacturer Daikin offers all the key components of a typical heating system including the hot water cylinder, controls and heat emitters such as under floor heating and heat pump convectors. This means that all products are designed to work together reliably and optimise the efficiency of the heat pump system, for total peace of mind. A flexible heating solution The Daikin Altherma Flex Type is a highly efficient and versatile hot water and heating solution delivering high water flow temperatures of up to 80 C. With two thirds of the heat generated from the renewable energy source of air, it s an ideal solution for replacing existing oil, LPG or electric heating systems. By reducing the total primary energy use, Daikin Altherma Flex Type can help to improve the energy performance of buildings, reduce running costs and cut carbon emissions in all kinds of environments. By choosing Daikin Altherma Flex Type, you can depend on a completely integrated system from a world-class brand, renowned for quality, reliability and performance. 1 Altherma Flex Type

The optional cooling module also has an in-built heat recovery function. This provides additional system efficiencies, as the domestic hot water tank can be heated up to 60 C using free heat reclaimed from the cooling operation. Inverter controlled compressors maximise comfort and minimise energy consumption Energy efficient heat pump technology The Daikin Altherma Flex Type system provides an energy efficient solution to the issue of increasing energy costs and the high environmental impact of conventional heating systems. With two thirds of the heat generated from the outside air, Daikin Altherma Flex Type typically generates 3kW of energy for every 1kW of electricity used*. Compared to an oil boiler, this results in: Up to 36% less running costs* Up to 71% reduction of CO 2 emissions* Up to 35% reduction in primary energy use* * Data calculated taking in account Belgian conditions: SCOP of 3, average energy prices 2007-2010, CO 2 emission factor for electricity production Renewable heating system for every environment 2

A Modular System Daikin Altherma Flex Type is a modular system consisting of one or more outdoor heat pump units connected by refrigerant pipework to multiple indoor hydrobox units. Each outdoor unit provides 23 45kW capacity and can connect up to 10 indoor units. The indoor units (available in 5 16kW) can be configured in a centralised or de-centralised arrangement to meet the building s heating requirements. This offers complete flexibility to integrate air-water heat pump technology on a much greater scale than is typically feasible using an individual heat pump system. De-centralised system The hydroboxes can be located in individual dwellings, such as apartments or collective housing, to create a de-centralised system. Each indoor unit can be operated independently, providing each property with individual control of heating, hot water and cooling (5 and 8 kw only). The indoor hydrobox units are fully equipped with all the required hydraulic components, so they can be connected easily to the heat distribution system. Individual dwellings can also be equipped with separate domestic hot water tanks, which are designed to stack on top of the indoor units, to create a small footprint of less than 0.6m 2 per dwelling. Centralised system Alternatively, the indoor units can be located together in one central plant room, to create a centralised system suitable for a wide range of large domestic and light commercial applications. The centralised indoor units offer modular system scalability and capacity to meet the heating demand of the overall building. Quiet in operation = + Outdoor unit Indoor unit Hydro box 1 or more outdoor units and several indoor units produces a modular system Domestic water tank Comfort is more than the perfect indoor climate. The use of a low noise inverter compressor in the indoor units means that they produce less sound than standard household appliances such as washing machines, dishwashers or refrigerators. In addition, a low noise mode is available to reduce the sound of the indoor unit even further. Decentralised system Centralised system 3 Altherma Flex Type

Daikin Altherma Flex Type harnesses heat pump technology The Daikin Altherma Flex Type outdoor unit is based on almost 30 years of Daikin s experience in developing its renowned VRV technology. At the heart of this technology, highly efficient, inverter-controlled compressors control the heating flow temperature, so that the capacity of the system is matched exactly to the heating demand of the building delivering optimal comfort with minimal energy consumption. Heat recovery reduces fuel consumption For further energy savings, heat recovered from other areas of the building can be reused. Instead of simply being released outside, the recovered heat can be used for hot water production or space heating either in the same area or elsewhere thus reducing the overall building s electricity costs. Outdoor Unit 1 2 3 Indoor Unit AIR FLOW TO HEATING SYSTEM Ambient down to -20ºC R-410A R-134A Flow up to +80ºC Heat exchanger Expansion valve Compressor Cascade heat pump technology The Daikin Altherma Flex Type system has two heat pump refrigerant circuits - one using refrigerant R410A and the other R134a which together achieve pressures and higher water temperatures than can be reached with just one refrigerant circuit. The cascade system optimises the performance of the two refrigerant circuits, with the R410a refrigerant circuit being most effective at low evaporating temperatures and the R134a circuit excelling at high condensing temperatures. The diagram above shows the three key stages: 1. The first refrigerant circuit (R410a) takes the heat energy from the central outdoor unit and transfers it to the indoor units The cascade system heat pump offers the following benefits: A wide range of high and low temperature heat emitters can be connected to the system Efficiency is maintained at higher water temperatures High capacities are still possible even at low ambient temperatures down to -20 C No electrical back-up heater is required Fast heat-up times are available for domestic hot water, from 15 to 60 C in 70 minutes (200L tank) In cooling mode, the R134a circuit is bypassed, the R410A refrigerant circuit is reversed, and the cool water circuit can be used to cool the rooms via convectors, fan coil units or underfloor loop 2. The second refrigerant circuit (R134a) raises the temperature further 3. The energy is then transferred to the heating and hot water system Renewable heating system for every environment 4

Supporting your project Initial enquiry Your local Daikin UK sales office will be pleased to assist with any enquiries. Once provided with necessary information, our pre-sales technical team will help to define a preliminary equipment list and assist you in an initial feasibility assessment. Daikin UK can also provide running cost estimates and projected savings against current equipment. Selecting the equipment Each project is unique and your chosen contractor will need to select the equipment carefully to suit the actual site conditions. As for any heating system, it is important to select the equipment, based on three factors: 1 The design temperature 2 The heat loads at design conditions 3 The building height 4 Hot water requirements Commissioning support Partner contractors will be supported by Daikin during the commissioning process to ensure that the system has been installed correctly and to assist in the rapid start-up of the system. Metering and billing for individual apartments For installations in housing schemes, it is important to specify the required metering and billing strategy right at the start of the project. Each outdoor and indoor unit will have its own power consumption, so it is recommended that separate electric meters are provided to each. The electricity consumption of the outdoor unit can be allocated between dwellings, either by dividing between the number of indoor units, or more accurately by apportioning the bill depending on energy consumption in each dwelling according to the meter reading. Daikin UK also provides a software tool to allow the building owner to calculate the correct share of the outdoor unit s running cost for each apartment based on the heat meter readings. Selection software Contractors trained to use the Daikin Altherma Flex Type selection software will be able to choose the correct system in a few steps. The software provides a clear report on all the specifications required for the whole system, including: Selection of indoor units, hot water cylinders and options Selection of outdoor units Refrigerant lengths and height differences Installation specifications: refrigerant piping diameters, refnet joints and headers, additional refrigerant charge, wiring diagram Choosing a contractor partner Daikin UK can also provide list of contractors trained to select, install and commission the equipment correctly. These contractors are expert Daikin installer partners with the necessary refrigeration skills for large installations, as well as experience of Daikin Altherma heat pumps. Daikin will support your chosen contractor through the detailed design process and provide them with necessary technical information to finalise the design. 5 Altherma Flex Type
