With 150 years of experience and growing international fame in lighting, Lyon is the unrivalled City of Light. Festival of Lights (around December 8th) An internationally acclaimed event which attracts over 4 million visitors to see light shows and installations all over the city, ranging from the most spectacular performances to the most intimate creations, by lighting designers, artists, landscapers, video artists, designers and architects. The event was awarded the trophy for Best Public Event at the Heavent Sud festival in Cannes in 2007. Lighting Master Plan In 1989, Lyon was the first city in the world to implement a Public Master Plan to enhance the ways, the buildings and monuments of Lyon. Artistic lighting designs showcase more than 200 monuments and public spaces around Lyon: City Hall, Hôtel Dieu, the universities, bridges, banks of the Rhone, Gerland Park, etc. In 2007, Lyon updated its plan, with the ambition to open the way for even more creativity, integrating new techniques, with a better usage of lighting as an element of urban, social and environmental development. Lyon is the President of the association Lighting Urban Community International (LUCI) since its founding in 2001. Some 60 cities from all over the world gather regularly on the theme of cooperation with urban lighting professionals and for the promotion of light as a perfect means to enhance urban sites and developments.
