Conference Speakers William D. (Bill) Adams is the author of numerous articles and his photos have been published in a number of magazines, calendars and books. He is the co-author/photographer of Commonsense Vegetable Gardening for the South with Tom LeRoy and he is the co-author of The Lone Star Gardener s Book of Lists with Lois Trigg Chaplin. Bill and Tom also teamed up for another book The Southern Kitchen Garden Most recently Bill authored The Texas Tomato Lovers Handbook, a guide to growing the most delicious tomatoes on the planet. This latest book is published by Texas A & M University Press. Bill worked in mass media most of his career appearing on radio and TV programs and writing a weekly column. Adams also served as the Harris County Master Gardener coordinator with over seven hundred active members. These days, after retiring from the Texas AgriLife Extension, Bill is concentrating his energies on gardening, writing and photography. He is a much-requested speaker at garden and civic clubs and he is a regular contributor of articles and photography to Neil Sperry s Gardens magazine. Bill has been a member of Garden Writers Association since 1972 and has served several terms as a Southern regional director. Tom LeRoy began his 35-year career with the Texas A&M Agricultural Extension Service (now Texas A&M AgriLife Extension) right out of college, after receiving a bachelor s degree in horticulture in 1975 and a master s degree in plant breeding in 1977, both from Texas A&M University. He served the first 11 years as the Montgomery County Extension Agent Horticulture where he implemented the first Master Gardener program in Texas. Twenty-five Montgomery County residents graduated from that first program. Since then over 115 Texas counties have started their own Master Gardener program. In 2004, Tom was presented an award from the Texas Master Gardener Association for what he terms his most notable accomplishment. Tom served as the Harris County Extension Agent Horticulture from 1988 until 1998, heading up its Master Gardener program. Tom has co-authored three gardening books with Bill Adams, Growing Fruits and Nuts in the South, Commonsense Vegetable Gardening in the South, and the latest, The Southern Kitchen Garden. From 1998 until his retirement in July 2012, he served as the County Extension Agent - Horticulture for Montgomery County. Upon his retirement, he was honored with County Extension Agent Emeritus by Texas AgriLife where he works part-time as the Assistant Texas Master Gardener Coordinator. Tom has been recognized by Texas AgriLife Extension Service, first in 1985 for Innovative Programs, including the first Master Gardener program in Texas, and again in 2006 for Standard Setting Leadership in Implementing the Texas Master Gardener Volunteer Model. This was the first time the Superior Service Award for Volunteerism had been presented by Texas AgriLife.
