Shampoo bottles Soft drinks bottles Steel cans (eg, baked beans) Telephone books Yoghurts containers (clean) WHAT HAPPENS TO YOUR RECYCLING? Your recycling is processed and turned into new products. WHAT HAPPENS TO GLASS? Glass from Lower Hutt is 100% recycled in New Zealand. Glass is sent to Auckland where it s melted and remade into glass bottles. WHAT HAPPENS TO TINS? Tins are squashed and tied together and sent to Auckland. They are melted down to make flat sheets of steel which are then made into new products. WHAT HAPPENS TO ALUMINIUM? Aluminium cans are baled and sent to local metal recyclers. They send it on to Bluff to be melted into ingots (bars of metal) for making into new drink cans. WHAT HAPPENS TO PLASTIC? Plastic is baled and the majority is sold to Southeast Asian countries. The plastic is then chipped, washed and melted down and made into things like car bumpers, motor oil, pipes, pails, new trash bags, pallets, non-food bottles and material fibres that make things such as polar-fleece clothing, insulation batts, sails for boats, carpet and fibrefill
WHAT HAPPENS TO PAPER? Around 85 per cent of all the paper and cardboard is collected by Oji - Full Circle Recycling - for recycling within New Zealand at our own Oji Fibre Solutions paper mills. Each year these mills process over 230,000 tonnes of cardboard and paper and turn this used material back into new packaging grade materials. The balance of the fibre and all other recyclables (eg, plastic film and shrinkwrap, plastic containers, steel and aluminium cans) are sold to either local re-manufacturers or international buyers for recycling overseas. MORE INFORMATION ABOUT NON-RECYCLABLE PRODUCTS Oil and paint The correct way to dispose of oil and paints is either keep the product until Hutt City Council holds its annual free Hazardous Waste Collection at the Riverbank Car Park or contact the Silverstream Landfill on the correct way to dispose. Polystyrene and food The correct way to dispose of polystyrene and food is to dispose of it in an approved Hutt City Council refuse bag and place on the kerbside on rubbish collection day.
