IS-24 IONIZATION SMOKE DETECTOR UL, ULC, CSFM Listed, FM Approved Radioactive Source: AM-241 0.5 µci Rated Voltage: 17.7-30.0 VDC Working Voltage: 15.0-33.0 VDC Maximum Voltage: 42 VDC Supervisory Current: 40 µa at 24 VDC Surge Current: 200 µa at 24 VDC Alarm Current: 150 ma at 24 VDC Ambient Temperature: 32 F to 120 F (0 C to 49 C) Sensitivity Test: Magnetically activated dual reed switch test Mounting: Refer to Potter SB Series Smoke Detector Base Series, bulletin no. 8840008 IS-24 Stock No. 1430010 Standard Features Low profile, 1.8" high (with base) 2 or 4 wire base compatibility, relay bases available Highly stable operation, RF/Transient protection Low standby current, 40 µa at 24 VDC Two built-in power/alarm LED's for 360 viewing Non-directional smoke chamber Vandal resistant security locking feature Built-in magnetic detector sensitivity test feature. Meets NFPA 72, Chapter 7, Inspection, Testing and Maintenance requirements Compatible with PS-24 photoelectric detectors Backwards compatible with Potter PS and IS smoke detectors. Compatible with Potter releasing controls Operation The IS-24 ionization smoke detector utilizes two bi-colored LED's for status indication purposes. In a normal standby condition the LED's flash green approximately once each second. When the detector senses smoke and goes into alarm the status LED's will latch on red. A single radioactive source of Americium-241 ionizes two chambers within the detector, a reference chamber and the smoke sensing chamber. The air is ionized by this source and a small DC current flows between the electrodes of each chamber. Smoke can freely enter the sensing chamber, while the inner chamber is virtually sealed to smoke. Smoke entering the sensing chamber causes a reduction in the DC current flow, the voltage imbalance between the two chambers is proportional to the smoke density. When the voltage difference becomes great enough it causes the detector to go into alarm. The two chamber design is utilized to compensate for changes in atmospheric and enviromental conditions. Application The IS-24 can be used in all areas where Ionization Smoke Detectors are required. The responsive, yet highly stable operation allows the IS-24 to fit in a wide range of uses. The IS-24 can be used in areas where early warning of superheated or flaming combustibles is expected. SB Series style bases may be used with the IS-24. The only current compatible device is the PS-24 Photoelectric detector. MKT. #8840006 - REV G 8/04 PAGE 1 OF 2

Each detector is available in single or multiple circuits with open and/or closed contact configurations. The prefix CR in the model number denotes rate of rise and fixed temperature operation. The prefix CF denotes fixed temperature only. The standard fixed temperature settings are 135 F and 200 F. Units set at 165 F and 285 F are also available. Model CF 135 W The CF135W is a fixed temperature only detector. The fixed temperature portion consists of a spring loaded plunger retained by a fusible alloy that releases when the ceiling temperature reaches 135 F (57 C). When released, the plunger strikes a normally open set of contacts and holds them closed. Spacing on an uninterrupted ceiling is 40 (12.5m). The CF135 is identified by a black dot on its heat collector fin. Model CR 200 W The CR200W is a combination rate of rise and fixed temperature detector that operates in the same way as the CR135W, except that the fi x e d t e m p e r a t u r e p o r t i o n r e l e a s e s w h e n t h e c e i l i n g t e m p e r a t u r e r e a c h e s 200 F (93 C) The spacing parameters for the rate of rise is 70 (22 m). The CR200W is identified by a black ring on its heat collector fin. Model CF 200 W The CF200W is a fixed temperature only detector. The fixed temperature portion releases when the ceiling temperature reaches 200 F (93 C). Spacing is 25 (7.62m). The CF200W is identified by a black dot and a black ring on the heat collector fin. Normally Closed Contacts Any detector in this series is available in normally open or normally closed contacts. The model number does not reflect the normally open configuration, however, the suffix C denotes normally closed. For example, CR135C W describes a rate of rise/fixed temperature detector, fusing at 135 F, with one set of normally closed contacts. Engineering Specifications Thermoflex Model CR135 Automatic Rate of Rise Heat Detectors shall be installed in areas where ambient temperatures do not exceed 100 F. In areas where ambient temperture is above 100 F but will not exceed 150 F, specify CR165 units. If ambient temperatures exceed 150 F, specify CR200 or CF285. In areas where sudden increases in ceiling temperature are normal, specify fixed temperature only units, with fusable settings of 135 F, 165 F, 200 F, or 285 F. The rate of rise operation responds to temperature increases of 15 F (8.4 C) per minute. Thermoflex detectors shall be installed in areas where environmental conditions including dust, vapors, insects, etc. would cause an ionization or photoelectric type detector to initiate a false alarm. All wiring must be installed in compliance with the local electrical code using approved cable, AWG 18 minimum. Begin electrical connections by stripping approximately 1 (2.5cm) from the end of each wire. Insert the stripped end into the wire retaining hole in the terminal bar, wrap clockwise around the terminal screw, and tighten. Circuit wiring must be broken at each terminal to ensure proper supervision. SPB-24N PROJECTED BEAM SMOKE DETECTOR Microprocessor based for reliability Simple setup & alignment with signal strength LED s Provides 60 feet on center linear protection at a range of 32.8 feet to 328 feet Automatic compensation for signal drift or dirty lens Three field adjustable sensitivity settings Form A alarm and Form B trouble contacts Calibrated filters available to verify sensitivity Color-coded emitter and receiver labels for easy recognition Stock number: 1430027 Application The SPB-24N Projected Beam Smoke Detector consists of an emitter and receiver. The projected beam smoke detector should be placed so that smoke generated by a fire will likely rise into the path of the beam. The receiver is constantly monitoring and measuring the intensity of the beam transmitted by the emitter. Should the smoke from a fire cause a decrease in the signal strength of a magnitude that exceeds the programmed obscuration setting, an alarm signal is generated. The SPB-24N Projected Beam Smoke Detector can provide vital fire detection in applications where other type detectors may not be able to respond quickly, or at all, to a fire condition. Examples of some applications where projected beam smoke detectors have been successfully used include: atriums, gymnasiums, theatres, museums, factories, tunnels, churches, stables, anechoic chambers and high air velocity areas. The SPB- 24N Projected Beam Smoke Detector may also be used in conjunction with more traditional spot type smoke detection devices to provide an even more comprehensive detection system. For more information on how to install the SPB-24N Projected Beam Smoke Detector consult the SPB-24N Installation Instruction Guide and the applicable NFPA Standards for additional guidance. Operation The near infrared pulsed beam generated by the emitter is sensed by the photodiode of the receiver, where it is converted into an electrical signal. This signal is then amplified and applied, via an analog to digital converter, to a microprocessor. The normal state signal (the initial beam data) once stored in the microprocessor is used as reference for comparison with subsequent beam signals. When there is a difference between actual beam strength and stored reference data that exceeds the programmed alarm obscuration reference level, a fire signal is produced. A trouble signal is generated if the beam is more than 90% obstructed (as opposed to partially obscured by smoke). The microprocessor also provides compensation for a change in received signal value, with time, caused by contamination of the optics. Since such a change with time appears as a slow change in the beam signal, the microcomputer compensates in such a manner that the signal moves closer to the reference data at a rate approximately +1% per hour. When this compensating capability reaches a limit, the microcomputer automatically generates a trouble signal. A calibrated test filter is available upon request to test and verify the sensitivity setting of the projected beam smoke detectors. SPB-24N PROJECTED BEAM SMOKE DETECTOR Engineering Specifications The contractor shall furnish and install, where indicated on the plans, the SPB-24N Projected Beam Smoke Detector. The detector shall have a range of 32.8 feet to 328 feet. The projected beam smoke detector shall be field adjustable to one of the three obscuration settings of 25%, 50% or 70% per span. These settings shall be capable of being verified with calibrated filters. Side to side spacing shall be a maximum of 60 feet on center. The projected beam smoke detector shall possess circuitry that automatically compensates for normal ambient changes in the intensity of the emitted beam strength. The microprocessor shall provide compensation for a change in received signal value, with time, caused by contamination of the optics. Since such a change with time appears as a slow change in the beam signal, the microcomputer compensates in such a manner that the signal moves closer to the reference data at a rate of approximately +1 % per hour. When this compensating capability reaches a limit, the microcomputer automatically generates a trouble signal. The projected beam smoke detector(s) shall also signal a trouble condition if the beam has a blockage of 90% or more than 20 seconds and automatically resets to normal when blockage is removed. The projected beam smoke detector(s) shall be UL listed for these applications. Voltage and RF transient protection shall be integral to the internal circuitry of the projected beam smoke detector so as to minimize false alarm potential. To facilitate easy installation and setup, the projected beam smoke detectors shall employ signal strength indicating LEDs. Alignment shall be facilitated by turning an alignment adjustment wheel and monitoring the relative signal strength based upon which LEDs are illuminated. The detectors shall also illuminate a red LED, which is visible externally, when an alarm condition is indicated. The projected beam smoke detector shall provide a Form A dry contact for alarm and Form B dry contact for trouble. Installation The SPB-24N Projected Beam Smoke Detector shall be installed in accordance with the Installation Instruction Guide provided with every unit. Refer to the applicable NFPA Standards for additional guidance on spacing, irregular ceiling surfaces and other design considerations. 4-WIRE CONNECTION TO THE CONTROL PANEL EMITTER E2 E1 EMITTER E2 E1 E2 E1 E2 24V OV F1 F2 T2 E1 EOLR-24 24V 24V ZONE ZONE CONTROL PANEL 24V OV F1 F2 T2 24V OV F1 F2 T2 24V OV F1 F2 T2 END OF LINE RESISTOR NOTE: EOLR-24 REQUIRED FOR POWER SUPERVISION.
