Black Sheep by Jean-François D Or BLACK SHEEP: NO, SERIOUSLY NOT A BLACK SHEEP A herd of black sheep graphically grazing around your table? It s all possible, in style, with Jean-François D Or s modular Black Sheep collection. The three benches - for 1, 2 or 3 people (60 cm, 2 x 60 cm, 3 x 60 cm) and easy to stack - offer everyseating comfort thanks to the simple but solid construction. They also look refined with their soft curves, the organic woollen sheep skin is a design extra. JEAN-FRANÇOIS D OR: RISING STAR OF BELGIAN DESIGN Elected Belgian designer of the year 2013, Brussels designer Jean-François D Or (1974) continues on his design path in his own original way, also international. In 1998 he graduated from the Brussels institute La Cambre, in industrial design. After gaining experience at Light, where he worked with designers such as Maarten Van Severen and Hans De Pelsmacker, he established his own studio in 2003 in Brussels: Loudordesign studio. Jean-François D Or chiefly designs living accessories - from hat stands, mirrors and dishes to lamps and glass - in cooperation with Belgian manufacturers and international labels. At first his designs seem simple but they always create an innovative experience. He aspires to an enrichment of products: unpretentious, logical, simple and with a touch of discreet poetry. 4
Cinéma by Alain Berteau CINÉMA: COLLAPSIBLE CHAIR? NO, LUXURY CHAIR You can t call Cinéma a chair because Alain Berteau s design has every characteristic of a small seat. Everything and more, because this flexible design with arms can be easily collapsed for compact storage. Without loss of elegance or seating comfort. Alain Berteau: Cinéma s folding system is quite unique. It concerns a self-blocking system with double rotation, making the seat as stable and solid as a non-foldable model. Listen, foldable chairs - usually for your terrace - are very easy but often lack style and they look cheap. With Cinéma I want to prove it can be done: making a foldable design chair that fits comfortably with a dining table or can look stylish in a conference room. This seat takes into consideration mechanics, geometry in movement, and kinematics too. ALAIN BERTEAU: THE ARCHITECT-DESIGNER Belgian designer Alain Berteau (1971) studied architecture at School of Visual Arts La Cambre in Brussels, where he now teaches Furniture Design. In 2002 he established his own design bureau which shifted from architecture to interior and product design. In 2006, Berteau was elected the first Belgian designer of the year. Nowadays his name is connected to all kinds of brands such as Montis, Bulo, Feld and Vange. Berteau is active as an architect and designer. He draws both residential and commercial architecture and in addition to furniture he also designs technical objects such as taps. He has his own company called Objekten, through which he designs accessible, solution-based design objects that simplify life. 5
Acrobat by Louis de Limburg Stirum ACROBAT: ADULTS ARE ALLOWED TO ROCK AS WELL A rocking chair? Or not? Acrobat s flowing lines conceal a playful and serious nature. The ingenious system allows you to switch easily between active and passive seating comfort. Designer Louis de Limburg Stirum drew Acrobat in one flowing line, the back and the seat form a whole. Children rocking in their chair have always got on my nerves (laughs). True, rocking is fun but often you also break the chair. So I decided to find a solution for this. As always I departed from forms follows function. You can also lock the rocking function if you want to turn it into an ordinary chair. And because you can rock on one axis you create playful-looking dynamic lines. LOUIS DE LIMBURG STIRUM: ARISTOCRAT AND PROFESSOR Louis de Limburg Stirum graduated from La Cambre in 1989, in industrial design, and followed an internship at Axel Enthoven where he really learned the ropes. He has worked as a freelance designer since 1992 and has his own studio, Stirum Design. After his first client, Villeroy&Boch, many national and international labels followed such as Ethnicraft, Rometti, Vervloet-Faes, Hermès, Eternum, Koozo and Puiforcat. Louis de Limburg Stirum combines contemporary elegance with industrial design in an artisanal way. He also teaches at the College of Advertising and Design in Uccle. 6
Spiral by Bart Coolen SPIRAL: THE ADJUSTABLE BUCKET SEAT Bart Coolen s adjustable retro tub was also given a place in FloWers & SeeDs. With its playful spindle, Spiral makes a veiled reference to old piano stools. The oak base is elegant with four thin, triangular legs. Bart Coolen: Technically we experimented a lot with lighter and heavier elements for a perfect mix between strength and refinement. As a home designer you are very familiar with the possibilities of oak, which is an advantage of course. And of course it is great to have carte blanche in your design. This co-operation calls for more and has only strengthened my design ambitions. BART COOLEN: CREATIVE ALL-ROUNDER Bart Coolen (1963) studied Industrial Design & Product Development at the Limburg Catholic University College, earning a Master s in Product Design. He is also a jury member at IKO, the School of Arts in Hoogstraten. Bart joined the Mintjens Group in 1989 as Chief Designer. 7
