Samsung EHS Heat Pump Test The following questionnaire is designed for installers who have experience with heat pumps, are currently MCS accredited, and who want to fast track their Samsung accreditation without taking part in a training course. In order to pass this test at least 16 of the following 20 questions must be answered correctly. Completed questionnaires are to be returned to Graham Hendra at graham@freedomhp.co.uk for marking. 1. The Samsung heat pump system comes with a control box and a boiler / outdoor unit. Which of the following other components are included in the units? A. The pump, auto air vent and strainer. B. A heat exchanger, pump and strainer. C. A heat exchanger and weather compensator. D. The weather compensator, strainer and pump. 2. The Samsung EHS unit has an inbuilt freeze up prevention cycle which keeps the system safe in very low ambient temperatures, so why do you have to put glycol in the water? A. It s the law under the building regs section L 2006. B. To stop the system from freezing up in power failure. C. To stop the system scaling up and corrosion. D. To prevent corrosion and to conform to the warranty. 3. The Samsung has a smart inverter system inside, what does that mean? A. The unit can heat and cool. B. The speed of the compressor can be controlled to match the heat load required. C. The unit has weather compensation fitted. D. The unit has a soft start function. 4. When looking at the heat output figures for the Samsung unit, the heat output falls as the ambient temperature falls. There is a dip in capacity starting at about +5C, but then increasing again as the temperature falls, why? A. The unit is not designed to heat in cold conditions. B. The capacity of the unit falls in all heat pump systems as it gets colder. C. The capacity of the unit is reduced to stop it freezing up. D. Because the unit has to defrost the overall capacity falls, at very low temperatures defrost is not required.

5. The Samsung unit has two thermostat terminals for two different zones B22 and B24. Is it possible to set the unit to have two different run temperatures, one for each zone? A. You can have two or more zones, but you have to have the same set temperature on all of them. B. This is not possible with the Samsung controls. C. Yes, each terminal has its own temperature curve. D. One of the terminals is for heating the other for hot water. 6. A customer has an unvented hot water cylinder installed, which is 2 years old. They do not want to replace the cylinder and want to re-use it with a heat pump, which of the following is correct? A. The cylinder is nearly new so won t be scaled up, it s fine to use with a Samsung EHS heat pump B. The cylinder should always be changed; old cylinders don t work on heat pumps C. If the cylinder has the right size coil we can re-use it D. The cylinder must have the correct coil, immersion heater and sensor pockets. 7. The customer would like to control their heating and hot water using an external controls package, they are planning to use a 3 channel heating and hot water controller. Can the Samsung Heat Pump be controlled in this way? A. You can control 2 x heating zones but the hot water is controlled from the Samsung controls only B. No, you have to use the Samsung controller C. It s no problem, there are terminals in the control box to control all of these functions D. The unit will work, but weather compensation will be disabled. 8. The heat loss calculation has been completed for the end user s lounge, 1000 Watts of heat is needed to maintain 21C temperature when its -2C outside. The radiator in the lounge is rated at 1200 Watts in the catalogue at 70C flow temperature, will it be big enough? A. Yes, 1200 Watts is perfect, the radiator will be fine with a Samsung heat pump B. No, the radiator will be too small when running at 50C, flow temperature it will only give 700 Watts C. Radiator sizing is less important with heat pumps as they tend to run for longer periods making up for the small size. D. When the weather gets cold we will boost the temperature from the heat pump making the radiator work better.

9. While commissioning a Samsung heat pump, an E911 error showed on the screen after 15 seconds of operation. What does it mean? A. The unit has air in it, once it has run for a few minutes this will clear and the unit will run properly. B. There is a communication error between the control box and the outdoor unit, reset the power to fix it. C. The pump has been installed the wrong way round and the water is flowing backwards through the unit. D. The flow switch is not showing enough flow to make contact. 10. The end user wants to mount the unit 10 metres down the garden and hide the pipework, can this be done? A. No, monobloc units are best sighted close to the house; split units are used when the pipework is long. B. No, the heat loss through the pipes is too great when running long distance. C. Yes, if the pipework is properly lagged and the pump size is correct this can easily be achieved. D. Yes, as long as 28mm flow and return pipes are used. 11. Do you have to use a buffer tank with a Samsung heat pump? A. Yes, every system should have a buffer B. No, it s inverter driven C. Yes, to avoid flow errors and to maximise the efficiency a buffer should be used D. No, as long as the system contains 20l of water no buffer is needed 12. E201 is flashing on the Samsung remote controller, what does it mean? A. There is a flow error caused by air in the system. B. There is a fault with the outdoor unit it needs attention. C. The power has been switched off to the outdoor unit causing a communication error. D. The timers have been set up incorrectly.

13. I have plumbed and wired a hot water cylinder to a Samsung EHS heat pump, but when I press the hot water start button nothing changes on the controller and the unit won t heat the cylinder. What is the fault? A. The system needs to be told it has a tank installed using a field setting before it will operate B. The unit is programmed for cylinder priority but the cylinder must be up to temperature C. The unit has a communication error D. The cylinder sensor is faulty 14. The customer does not like the look of the Samsung EHS outdoor unit; they want to install it behind a fence or in the garage, which of the following is the best advice? A. Putting the unit in the garage is a good idea it s out of sight and will work well. B. The unit cannot be boxed in; it needs to move lots of air to work well. C. Hiding the unit behind a plant or tree is always a good idea. D. Putting a screen in front of the unit is a good idea as long as the sides and back are clear. 15. The heat pump is operating, but it s a bit odd. The hot water coming out the cylinder is very hot, over 60 degrees C, but the unit seems to keep spending a lot of time heating the tank. It is using the immersion heater to do this not the heat pump. The tank temperature is reading 34 degrees C. What is wrong? A. The unit is doing a legionella protection function, this is normal. B. The unit is broken and needs a new control box PCB C. The tank temperature sensor is not accurately measuring the water temperature D. Someone has set the tank temperature really high 16. The 3 port valves have 5 wires, when connecting them to the heat pump which ones should be used? A. All of them are required. B. Only the orange and blue wires are used. C. The valve needs one feed to white, one the grey and another to the blue. D. The valve must be wired as a diverter, grey and white are live, blue is neutral.

17. The heating 2 port valves are broken, when the unit is switched off and nothing is running the valves are open, they only seem to close when the unit is heating the cylinder, is this ok? A. This is incorrect the valves will only open when heating is running. B. This is incorrect the heating and hot water valves can be open together for mixed mode. C. The heating valves are operating correctly, they are supposed to be open when the unit is not running. D. The operation is correct; the unit is in a cool down mode, after 6 minutes the valves will close. 18. 2 days ago it was snowing outside and the customer s radiators were very warm (50 degrees C), today the weather is mild and the radiators are much cooler (40 degrees C). The heat pump may have run out of power. Which of the following is the best advice? A. Keep an eye on the unit, if it continues to fail to heat the radiators, an engineer will need to check the unit out. B. The unit is probably not working very hard or it is in defrost mode, it will warm up soon. C. The unit has a weather compensation function; the radiators modulate with the outdoor temperature. D. Someone has been playing with the controller; the radiators should always be hot. 19. The customer wants to mount the heat pump on brackets on the wall at high level, is this possible? A. Yes, if suitable brackets are used and adequate drainage is supplied there is no problem. B. Putting the units at high level is a bad idea, they will drip on passers by. C. The units should always be mounted on feet, they are not suitable for wall mounting. D. Mounting the units on brackets is a bad idea, the end users will hear vibrations. 20. I have been told its best to mount the outdoor unit in sunshine to increase efficiency, is this a good idea? A. Yes, the sun will warm the front of the unit making it more efficient. B. No, don t do this it will affect the weather compensation function. C. Yes, the more warmth the unit receives from the sun the better it will work. D. No, it makes no difference, the unit works hardest at night and in winter when there is no sun.
