We have a fresh supply of the popular Backyard Composting Guides that provide the basic information to help you get started in recycling your food waste and green waste. You can pick one up at the County Public Works office in Oroville, the Neal Road Recycling & Waste Facility and various locations throughout the County. Check out a book and Recycle your batteries: A reminder that all Butte County Libraries offer battery recycling boxes for all household batteries. For more locations to recycle your batteries check out the County Recycling Directory at: RecycleButte.net Product Stewardship - Starting in 2016, Free Mattress Recycling for Residential Customers Mattresses are big and bulky and can be a hassle to get rid of when you no longer want them. Fortunately there is now a program that will help you deal with this hefty task. California has introduced an industry run statewide mattress recycling program to promote proper end of use management and increase recovery of valuable resources. The passage of the California Used Mattress Recovery and Recycling Act aims to reduce illegal dumping, increase recycling, and substantially reduce public agency costs for the end of use management of used mattresses. The legislation established an industry run, statewide program to increase the recovery and recycling of mattresses at their end of use. Why Mattresses?

Page 2 of 5 Mattresses contain materials that are relatively easy to recycle and have consistent market value. Also, when disposed into landfills, they do not compact like regular trash and therefore take up more space and unnecessarily reduce the life of the landfill. And unlike other products that are mostly consumed, (Food, paint, etc.) every mattress manufactured will ultimately be discarded. Implementation Starting early in 2016, (Date to be determined) residences that bring in mattresses to the Neal Road Recycling & Waste Facility will no longer be charged the $9.00 disposal fee. This fee waiver applies only to the individual resident that delivers the mattress directly and not any commercial trash hauling service or commercial enterprise like for hire cleanup services or property management firms. The mattresses will then be transported to any one of several mattress recyclers operating in the State and disassembled to their core materials. This program is managed by the industry created Mattress Recycling Counsel. This organization will oversee that manufacturers, retailers and mattress recyclers properly manage the flow

Page 3 of 5 Product Stewardship Update: PaintCare now has nine collection locations in Butte County for free drop off Landfill Update The Big Dig If you've been out to the Neal Road Recycling and Waste Facility lately you've noticed quite a bit of activity involving earth moving equipment and new road construction. Expansion of the landfill is underway with new module excavation scheduled for completion this year. The construction of the liner system is to be installed in 2016 with the new module ready to accept waste in 2017. Recycling Update Tire Amnesty takes in over 150 tons of waste tires On September 26th, with the help of Chico Rugby Foundation, the Butte County Mosquito Abatement District, the Highway 70 Industrial Park and the Public Works Department collected over 150 tons of waste tires from the public. Many members of the public worked to pick up discarded tires from empty lots and roadsides. Great Job by everybody! Paint has never been easier to recycle now that Butte County has nine locations to take your leftover paint for free drop off. PaintCare sites accept all brands of old house paint, stain and varnish even if they are 20 years old! Containers must be five gallons or smaller, and a few types of paint are not accepted, like spray paint and auto paint. Page 4 of 5 Recycling Tips for the Holiday Season It's just a sign of the season that our trash and recycling carts appear a bit fuller during the holidays. Here are some tips to make sure the trash cart keeps from spilling over the top: As always reducing what you use is the most efficient way to cut down on waste, then reusing and then recycling. A more comprehensive list of holiday waste reduction ideas are here: Holiday Recycling Tips Reusable Gift Bags. The gift wrap that keeps on giving and giving and giving. Shiny foil wrapping paper. Unrecyclable. Try to avoid. Avoid the avalanche of Catalogues. Most catalogues now have an opt out number or a link to take you off their mailing list. Recycle those packing peanuts. Any package shipping store will gladly accept clean packing peanuts for reuse. Or you can reuse them yourself when shipping gifts. Will you be deep frying a turkey?: Used frying oil should not go down the drain. Take it to Springboard Biodiesel, 2323 Park Ave., Fridays from 7:30 to 4:00. Rechargeable Batteries: Rechargeable batteries and a battery charger are a great way to cut down on the consumption of batteries. This makes a great gift for those high battery users. Donate: Old toys, clothes, bikes, appliances and any other good stuff can go to one of many non profit resale stores for reuse. And finally: The Christmas Tree should be recycled.
