BDS-65 BARNES DRILL MAGNETIC COOLANT SEPARATORS
magnetic separators provide automatic production savings increased production Barnes Drill Magnetic Separators automatically remove sludge from coolant. Reduced downtime for cleaning increases production hours of a machine. longer life for wheels and tools Field experience has shown that tools and wheels last longer with clean coolant. Since clean coolant does not "load" the surface of a grinding wheel with waste particles, dressings are less frequent, and wheel life is increased. better control of finish As mentioned above, clean coolant does not "load" a wheel, and a freely cutting wheel gives a required finish faster. The operator gets a uniform finish on parts more quickly - with fewer rejects. lower coolant costs Coolant continually recirculates through the Magnetic Separator, and chips are automatically removed on each pass. Coolant does not have to be thrown out because of a heavy contaminant load. lower maintenance costs To remove sludge, the maintenance man simply empties the sludge box. Waste particles will not accumulate in the machine sump. reduced machine wear Load-free coolant spray leaves no abrasive deposit on machine surfaces and working parts. Coolant remains a better washing agent. minimum floor space requirements Barnes Drill Magnetic Separators have a compact design. Frequently, the separator will fit in the machine's outside coolant tank, and no extra floor space is required. quick investment return Savings from increased production and lower maintenance costs return the original cost of a Barnes Drill Magnetic Separator in a short time. Your Barnes Drill representative is able to prepare a cost analysis for a particular application. maintenance-tree design Di rty Coolant Since there are no filters, jets, or tubes to clean or exchange, the Separator requires no continuing maintenance. The entire sludge-removing process is simply a matter of periodically emptying the sludge pan. Used coolant flows into the Separator, and it is channeled past a rotating drum containing permanent ALNICO horseshoe magnets. As ferrous particles cling to the drum, they are squeezed into a semi-dry state by a roller and are then scraped off the drum and deposited into a sludge pan. Clean coolant flows back into the machine, ready for use. strong magnetic action ALNICO magnets used in these Separators provide the strongest magnetic attraction possible for removing ferrous particles. The magnets are permanently sealed in a stainless steel drum, and the entire drum is continually rotated by a X -HP motor. Separators contain 8lbs. of magnets for every 5 GPM ofcoolant capacity. All coolant entering the Separator passes through the interlocking magnetic field for a distance of 27 72 ". In the 20 GPM size, approximately 275 sq. in. of magnetic surface area are in contact with the loaded coolant at all times. The separator operates continually while the machineis in operation. 2

Production supervisors and machine tool manufacturers have widely adopted these Separators as standard equipment for quality and maintenance control on metal finishing equipment. The wide range of these applications is indicated by the list at the right. complete laboratory facilities Barnes Drill Co. maintains laboratory facilities to analyze contaminated coolant from individual applications and will recommend the exact Separator or Kleenall Filter to meet the needs of the installation. The laboratory bases its recommendation on the following factors: flow rate; viscosity of the fluid; particle size, weight, and chip characteristics; percentage of contaminant in the fluid; and the optimum degree of clarity. Kleenall Filters are described briefly on Page 8. Barnes Drill Co. Rockford, Illinois 3
squeegee-action roller for semi-dry swart ' As the magnetic drum carries chips to the top of the Separator, a tension-adjusted neoprene or brass roller squeezes the swarf into a semi-dry state for easier handling. This feature also reclaims coolant which would otherwise adhere to the particles as they are scraped onto the discharge chute. large contact area The magnetic attraction stretches across the entire width of the stainless steel drum. Since all coolant must pass through this area, the entire coolant supply is cleaned rapidly and effectively. double cleaning action Note "Brush" Formation for Double Action Cleaning Magnetized particles form a perpendicular or fan shaped pattern on the surface of the drum. This acts to "comb out" any free abrasive or other material as the drum rotates. simple, compact installation CON CENTRA TED Magnetic Field Maintenance employees can install a Barnes Drill Magnetic Separator in a short time. The Separator is wired into the machine circuit, and the used coolant flow is diverted to the Separator. Because of its compact design, the Separator frequently can be placed directly into the coolant tank, eliminating the need for additional piping. Floor space is conserved as well. 4

Today's demands for the most critical of finishes place added emphasis for even cleaner coolant. For this reason - along with appreciable coolant savings through extended re-use - metalworking machine builders in all categories are including Barnes Drill Separators as original equipment. We will quote on this basis, or our engineers will recommend the unit best mated to existing equipment, or for replacement of obsolete coolant cleaning equipment. Clean coolant cuts costs, and Barnes Drill units quickly pay for themselves in the many savings they offer. Shown at right are three typical installations utilizing Barnes Drill Separators and above shows a Barnes Drill Honing machine with a No. 5 Separator in the inset. 6
Barnes Drill Filtration Results in Broad Savings When Installed in Central Systems... In installations where batteries of machines produce heavy accumulations of sludge, a central coolant system may be desirable. Barnes Drill Magnetic Separators or Filters can be conveniently arranged to automatically clean the coolant in a central system. Barnes Drill engineers have designed coolant cleaning equipment for a number of these applications, some of which are illustrated on this page. Existing Installations Barnes Drill engineers will evaluate your present installation and will work with your maintenance and service departments to determine the most economical arrangement of Separators or Filters for your plant. A Separator central system that services more than 165 machines for a prominent manufacturer. New Installations If you believe there is a need for a central system in your production line and you plan to incorporate it in a new building or plant addition, let Barnes Drill engineers work with your architect or consulting engineer. Such a coordinated effort will assure proper placement of the system to bring about the most economical installation and operation of the units involved. TYPICAL BARNES DRILL SEPARATOR AND FILTER INSTALLATIONS Sludge is being removed from coolant used in a rolling mill at a rate of 500 GPM. KLEENALL COMBINATION MAGNETIC AND FABRIC FILTER Positive, "two-stage" cleaning through a combined fabric ffiter and magnetic separator. Dirty coolant flows through magnetic field to pick up ferrous particles, then passes through ffiter fabric toremove non-ferrous contaminants. As swarf builds up on fabric, efficiency actually increases. Additional ffitering action of swarf also accounts for low fabric consumption. Positive indexing of fabric is actuated by a pressure sensing device rather than a float. The unit can be mounted in, on, or along-side existing sump, or it can be mounted on auxiliary tank. Barnes Drill also makes a complete line of Fabric Filters which operate on the same principle as the combination units except there is no magnetic drum in these units. (Write for Barnes Drill Filter Fabric Selection Guide). COMBINATION COOLANT CLEANER AND COOLER SHOULDER HEIGHT CONTROLS In a single, compact unit coolant is cleaned by the Barnes Drill combination ffiter-separator, and is then cooled at controlled temperature for specific applications. Cooling of coolants and removing contaminants in the same "package" results in these savings and/ or benefits: Only one piece of equipment to purchase. No need to "shop around" for separate cooling and filtration equipment. Installation greatly simplified; reduces need for excessive piping, wiring, and other connections. Barnes Drill Kleenall unit is a "matched set" to assure high efficiency at lowest possible operating cost. One unit to do two important jobs: Saves on valuable floor space... reduces maintenance and housekeeping problems.
