The present economic crisis was caused by a handful of people acting in narrow and greedy self-interest; people can turn our fortunes around, but to do so, we'll need to act in the interests of everyone, not just of banks and corporations who pay their CEOs and lobbyists more than they pay in income tax (see The Live Wire below). Throughout history, the labor movement has responded to major crises by joining other social justice movements to organize and create massive change for the betterment of people's lives. Today, the need for concerted action could not be more clear. Our jobs, wages, benefits and the services we provide are threatened absolutely everywhere we work. We live under constant and growing economic pressures both as individuals and as a union. Everywhere we are forced to make concessions at the table.
make concessions at the table. SEIU 1021 members are already fighting back, launching public campaigns to save our jobs and the services we provide to that public. Together we've already saved hundreds of jobs and restored tens of millions of dollars to city and county budgets. SEIU 1021 Member Convention: "Championing Our Jobs and the People We Serve" In February our local will hold its first-ever member convention to chart our course for the future. Every single chapter will elect and send two (2) voting delegates to the convention, but any member may attend. The delegate election process is beginning now. We have an opportunity to demonstrate how our union can be the vehicle that champions our jobs and the people we serve, be a force for good in the world and our communities... by putting pressure on our bosses to change their misguided priorities... by electing and lobbying our state and local lawmakers... by fighting for a fair and equitable economy. The SEIU 1021 Member Convention is where we will set our course for the future. We're already on the move. Save the dates: February 11-12, 2012. In next week's issue of the NewsWire: We launch the 1021 Convention home page and tell you how to register and make your voice heard in the convention process. SEIU 1021 Bylaws, Policies & Forms The Live Wire This Week on 1021 Twitter Anne Lamott: "Unions and America fit together like... Legos" I love unions. I love them in the same way I love libraries and redwood groves. They are like churches: sacred. They are what make this country great.... I guess it is a plank of the Christian right to be anti-union now. But remember, there are still a lot of us in the Christian left, and we don't feel that way. When I was growing up, everyone I knew was pro-union, just like everyone used public libraries and everyone in California was proud of the public education system and loved the state's natural beauty. People would fight and rally and protest and donate to help preserve it. AFL-CIO Now: CEOs Rake in More than Their Corporations Pay in Taxes Of last year's 100 highest-paid U.S. corporate chief executives, 25 took home more in CEO pay than their company paid in 2010 federal corporate income taxes, according to a new report from the Institute for Policy Studies (IPS).
Corporations don't dodge taxes, the people who run corporations do. And these CEOs are reaping awesomely lavish rewards for the tax dodging they have their corporations do.... [T]he 25 tax-dodging CEOs... averaged $16.7 million in pay last year, well above the $10.8 million Standard & Poor's 500 CEO average. Most of their companies registered substantial profits. Yet these same companies actually came out ahead at tax time. They collected, on average, $413 million in refunds from the IRS.... In addition to handing their CEOs big dollars, 20 of the 25 corporations in the study spent more on lobbying lawmakers than they paid in corporate taxes.
