Some of the best known companies in the medical industry include Siemens Medical, GE Medical, Tyco Healthcare, and Philips Medical. In addition to these big players there are many other smaller companies who specialize in specific devices or equipment. These smaller enterprises want to incorporate additional features or improved performance to distinguish themselves in the marketplace. Major relay applications in the Medical Market include:» Imaging & Diagnostic Equipment» Analytical Laboratory Instruments» Medical Apparatus Controls» Surgical Appliances & Supplies» Motorized Wheelchairs Figure 1: Relay sales in the $0.5 Million $1.3 Million Class 1, Division 2 Relays Plug-In Relays $2.4 Million $4.8 Million Solid State Relays PCB Relays 2

Market & Opportunity There are two business sectors which use relays in their applications: Medical Facility Equipment Medical facilities include hospitals, doctors offices, clinics, and rehabilitation centers. These locations provide patient care, examination and treatment. At these facilities, devices such as imaging and diagnostic equipment, surgical appliances, and motorized wheelchairs are needed to provide reliable service to ensure comfort and mobility. Laboratory Instrumentation Laboratories not only conduct a multitude of tests used in the diagnosis of patients, they also conduct research on potential cures and new treatments. Labs use a wide range of scientific, analytical and diagnostic devices that require speed and precision in delivering data and test results. Instruments can vary in size from table top testers to room-size analyzers. 3

Customer Profile Who should I talk to? The Medical Market is comprised of a myriad of different segments, each with its own specialty in providing care for patients. The target audiences we will address in this playbook are those customers who use relays in their products. These customers design and manufacture equipment in the following areas: Imaging & diagnostic equipment makers design and build Ultrasound (Sonography) Units, MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) Machines, Portable X-Ray Equipment, CT (CAT) Scanners, Patient Monitoring Equipment, and various Cardio-Imaging Units. This large market segment contains well-known industry names such as GE Medical, Siemens Healthcare, Medtronic, ZOLL Medical, Thermo Fisher Scientific, and Varian Medical Systems. Analytical laboratory instruments manufacturers make diagnostic instruments and analyzers used in patient diagnosis and scientific laboratory research. Customer examples include Abbott Laboratories, Corning, PerkinElmer, Siemens Medical Solutions, and Denver Instruments. Medical apparatus manufacturers make hospital beds, examination tables, and the corresponding controls for each. The beds and tables are designed to position patients for comfort, examination or surgery. The controls are designed to operate the fractional horsepower (HP) motors that adjust height and position. Some examples of these customers include Stryker Medical, Hill-Rom, Invacare, Sunrise Medical, Rauland-Borg, and Hoyer. Surgical appliances & supply companies design and build heating controls for surgical centers, intensive care units and critical care (emergency) facilities. Their products include sterilizers, blood warming units, and infant incubators. Examples of companies in this area are Medtronic, Pelton-Crane, Johnson & Johnson, Kimberly- Clark, and American Medical Systems. Motorized wheelchairs build scooters, power chairs, and motor-driven wheelchairs for individuals with limited mobility. Some of the companies in this field are Invacare, Freedom Designs, Skil-Care, Tisport, and Mobility Freedom. The key individuals to contact include:» Design Engineers design and layout the end units and/or entire systems.» Component Engineers design and qualify individual components such as relays.» Process Engineers oversee manufacturing of the devices and systems.» Quality Engineers confirm that products meet the appropriate standards and requirements.» Engineering Managers oversee product development.» Purchasing Agents / Buyers negotiate the prices and contracts for a specific component.» Purchasing Managers negotiate prices and contracts for all components used in specific products or systems. These individuals are located at design, R&D and manufacturing facilities. Don t forget to talk to existing customers! Questions to ask if they purchase relay products: Do you have a need for switching solutions with higher reliability? Are you implementing into a hazardous location? Do you need to save space? See page 7 for more information. 4

Customer Profile What is the typical customer pain? Customer & Gap Magnecraft Solution Imaging & Diagnostic Equipment Companies In recent years, the use of scanners as diagnostic and preventative tools for patient care has created a large demand for imaging equipment. Small offices, clinics and imaging centers continue to open up across the country to provide these services, generating a need for smaller, portable units that perform the same function. Customers require longevity and precision for both large and portable units. Magnecraft PCB Relays enable unit size reduction without sacrificing performance. Solid State Relays add precision and extend the life of the end product with silent and dependable operation. Analytical Laboratory Instrument Companies Laboratories have to provide quick results at lower costs. Medical and research personnel must spend less time analyzing and more time reporting. To meet these demands, laboratory instrument makers are developing automated workstations that provide accurate results in less time. To survive in an increasingly competitive environment, these customers have to develop smaller, faster units. PCB Relays are smaller than competitive power relays and minimize the size the size needed for the overall end unit. Solid State Relays offer precision and speed without sacrificing long-term performance. Class 1, Division 2 Relays are a necessity if testing is done in a hazardous location (e.g., in the presence of flammable gases such as oxygen). Medical Apparatus Manufacturers Medical apparatus controls require operation of small motors and solenoids. Customers are looking to reduce the size of their controls and/or eliminate operating noise. PCB Relays are perfectly suited with their 5 to 20 Amp load ratings and are smaller than competitive power relays. Plug-In Relays are the components of choice for motor control. For silent operation, nothing beats Magnecraft Solid State Relays which operate without any moving parts and without any noise. Surgical Appliance & Supply Makers Sterilizers and warming units are sometimes utilized around the clock. Customers in this area strive to increase the life of their equipment. To increase the life of the end unit, Solid State Relays provide the best solution with their semiconductor technology and generous operating cycles. Units used in the presence of flammable gases such as oxygen require Class 1, Division 2 Relays, such as the 861H Solid State Class 1, Division 2 Relay, for safety and performance. Motorized Wheelchair Manufacturers Scooters and motorized wheelchairs provide greater access to patients with impaired mobility. The controls generate a series of motors used for steering and positioning. Manufacturers build small, easily-controlled units for disabled and elderly individuals. PCB Relays provide the space savings needed for controls. Plug-In Relays control both large and small motors with ease. For high-end models, Solid State Relays provide longevity and silent operation. 5

Customer Profile How do I find customers? Customers can be located through the use of their Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) or North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) codes. These codes are four (SIC) or six (NAICS) digit numerical codes assigned by the U.S. government to business establishments to identify the primary business of the establishment. The following table contains the codes used to find customers: NAICS Code NAICS Description SIC Code SIC Description Imaging & Diagnostic Equipment GE Medical Siemens Healthcare Medtronic Thermo Fisher Scientific 334510 Electromedical and Electrotherapeutic Apparatus Manufacturing 3845 Electromedical and Electrotherapeutic Apparatus Analytical Laboratory Instruments Abbott Laboratories PerkinElmer Siemens Medical Solutions Denver Instruments 334516 Analytical Laboratory Instrument Manufacturing 3826 Laboratory Analytical Instruments Medical Apparatus Stryker Medical Hill-Rom Invacare Sunrise Medical 339111 Laboratory Apparatus and Furniture Manufacturing 2599 Hospital Beds Manufacturing Surgial Appliances & Supplies Medtronic Johnson & Johnson Kimberly-Clark American Medical Systems 339113 Surgical Appliance and Supplies Manufacturing 3845 Electromedical and Electrotherapeutic Apparatus Motorized Wheelchairs Invacare Freedom Designs Tisport Mobility Freedom 339113 Surgical Appliance and Supplies Manufacturing 3842 Orthopedic, Prosthetic, and Surgical Appliances and Supplies The following websites are a great resource to use when looking for customers using SIC and NAICS codes: SIC: http://www.siccode.com/ NAICS: http://www.naics.com/search.htm 6
