1. Introduction Safety Features:. The following documentation contains information about the use of the centrifuge. This information will help all users to gain a complete understanding of this centrifuge. Repairs of the control unit and safety devices are permitted only with a written instruction of GERBER INSTRUMENTS LTD and must only be performed by specialized staff. Unprofessional repairs may lead to severe damages. Danger advices: Labelling: When working with electrical control units there are inevitably parts which are under dangerous voltage. Therefore, the control unit must be in a perfect condition before work, to avoid serious body injuries and damages on the unit. All covers, which include electrical working devices are labelled with the following Warning sign: Black arrow on yellow background. 3
2. Safety Precautions General: The centrifuge must be used only by specialized personel and by following these instructions. Please note especially, that: the centrifuge is placed on a firm surface and that the air-holes atthe side of the unit are free. all covers are closed, so that no parts that are under electricty can be touched. the control unit is in perfect condition. the technical safety devices are functionning and have not been manipulated. Labelling: Warning of a danger zone Warning of dangerous electrical voltage Warning of corrosive goods Warning of hot surfaces 4
Carefully unpack the centrifuge. 3. Unpacking Place the centrifuge on a firm table and check make sure that the air-holes at the side of the centrifuge are free. Remove all packing material. Check if voltage corresponds with specification on the label. 3.1. Lid lock system: The lid can only be openend when the centrifuge is powered. To open the lid plug the centrifuge to the main. Put main switch on position I = green lamp and the control lamp brake are on. (Centrifuge is running a self-check!) After approx. 40 sec. the lamp brake will goes off again and the lid can now be opened. In case of cut-off of electricity or if the centrifuge is not connected to the mains, the lid can be opened manually. See also instructions in section SAFETY FEATURES. 3.2. Transportation: To avoid damage during transportation, the bushings are packed separately. In order to assure best possible balancing, the bushings are marked pair-wise and must be inserted in the opposite positions in the rotor. 3.3. Balance of Bushing-Weight: The bushings are numbered pair-wise. The matching numbers are placed in the opposite positions. The numbers are printed on the bottom of the bushings. 5
4. Description of Functions Functions of digital display: (1) Temperature The heating warms up the inside chamber of the centrifuge. Its function is to warm up the butyrometer, which have to be read at 65 C. As the reaction between of the sulphuric acid and milk mixture produces heat as well, the temperature is set at 55 C at the factory.the butyrometers are placed in the waterbath to get the exact reading temperature. The digital display shows the required temperature. The pre-set temperature of 55 C can be adjusted. The potentiometer which is placed under the temperature display can be adjusted in the needed direction with a screw driver. (2) Time The running time can be set individually on the digital display. (It is set in minutes!) After expiring of the programmed running time, the brake activates automatically. Functions of the control lamps: (3) run lights on when centrifuge is running (4) brake lights on when the brake is activated (5) lid lights on when lid lock is unlocked (6) heating lights on during the heating time. It shuts off when the required temperature is reached. 6
Functions of the heating: The heating is thermostatically controlled. It can be shut off or can be adjusted to any needed temperature in the range of 5 C over room temperature up to 65 C. The temperature in the centrifuge is set at the factory at 55 C. Please refer also to remarks under Functions of the digital display: (1) Temperature on page 5. Centrifuge is used without heating: To use centrifuge without heating set the required temperature below room temperature. This shuts off the heating. Centrifuge is used with heating: Usually the centrifuge is used with heating. As soon as the motor is running, the heating is automatically on. 7
5. Instructions of use 5.1 First start-up -centrifuge is placed on a firm ground -the centrifuge case will warm up if the heating is used. -Therefore, do not use the centrifuge close to material sensitive to heat. -plug to mains. IMPORTANT: make sure mains is earthed. 5.2. Daily routine work a) Main switch is on. The centrifuge is running a self-check. (control lamp brake light on) After 40 sec. the LED control lamp brake lights off and the centrifuge is ready to use. b) Fill the butyrometer in opposite positions into the rotor, thus to avoid any unbalance. c) Close lid and presss START/STOP button. After running time has ended the centrifuge stops automatically. The lid can be opened once the brake control lamp has shut off. Attention: the butyrometers are warmed up due to the chemical reaction of the sulphuric acid/milk mixture. Sulphuric acid can be spilled due to glass breakage. 8
6. Safety Features 6.1. Lid lock system: keeps you from operating the centrifuge with the lid open and allows to open the centrifuge only after a complete stand still. In case of cut-off of electricity or if the centrifuge is not connected to the mains, the lid may be opened manually. Unplug the plug, unscrew the plastic cover (grey) and pull the ring to the outside with a hook. 6.2. Unbalance shut-off: (OPTIO AL) The automatic unbalance shut-off device shuts the centrifuge off in case of excessive vibrations. The sensitivity of the shut-off is calibrated at the factory. If the unbalance device becomes active, the centrifuge is stopped and the error message appears on the panel. The centrifuge can only be restarted when the lid has been opened and closed again. 9
7. Cleaning and Maintenance Always remove lead before starting any repair work. Keep the centrifuge compartment clean. After glass breakage of a filled butyrometer, sulphuric acid can be spilled in the compartment. It is very important, that the bushings and the compartment of the centrifuge are immediately and thoroughly cleaned. Corrosive acids may damage the centrifuge. For cleaning please follow the relevant guidelines for handling with chemicals. 10
